Two types of oleophilic acrylic prepolymers were prepared by the solution copolymerization of either ethyl acrylate (EA) or lauryl acrylate (LA) with hydroxy ethyl acrylate (HEA). For the formation of oil-absorbent materials, a mixed solution of the prepolymer and hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI) as a cross-linker in toluene was applied to polypropylene knit velvet fabric through the conventional pad-dry-cure procedure. The gel fraction of the crosslinked resin, EA-HEA-HDI, increased with increasing feed ratio of HEA to total acrylate or HDI concentration. The oil absorbancy and retention ratio of the prepared materials were compared according to the add-on ratio of resin to fabric, and were assessed with n-decane, toluene, soybean oil, lubricant and bunker C oil as test oils. The optimal oil absorbancy of the materials were observed at around 6% of the add-on ratio for all these oils except for soybean oil. On the other hand, the oil retention ratio increased as the add-on ratio increased. Futhermore, heavier and more viscous oil generally showed higher oil retention ratios. In addition, the oil absorbancy of the materials treated with LA-HEA-HDI resin was higher than that treated with EA-HEA-HDI resin, which showed that the acrylic resins are more absorptive with increasing length of their side alkyl chain.
Purpose: The functional ophthalmic lenses containing fluorine-substituted aniline group (2,4-difluoroaniline, 2,6-difluoroaniline, 3,4-difluoroaniline) were manufactured and the physical and optical characteristics of copolymerized ophthalmic lens were investigated. Methods: HEMA (2-hydroxyethylmethacrylate), NVP (N-vinyl pyrrolidone), MA (methacrylic acid), the cross-linker EGDMA (ethylene glycol dimethacrylate) and the initiator AIBN (azobisisobutyronitrile) were used as a basic combination and fluorine-substituted aniline group (2,4-difluoroaniline, 2,6-difluoroaniline, 3,4-difluoroaniline) were used as additives for preparing the hydrogel soft contact lenses. The hydrogel ophthalmic lens was manufactured by cast mould method and the ophthalmic lenses were stored in a 0.9% NaCl normal saline for 24 hrs. Results: The optical transmittance of the sample with addition 2,4-difluoroaniline showed that the UV-B(9.8~51.4%), UV-A(58.8~79.2%) and visible transmittance(87.0~90.4%). In the case of 2,6-difluoroaniline were measured the UV-B(80.2~83.2%), UV-A(85.8~86.4%), and visible transmittance(90.8~91.4%). Also, the optical transmittance of ophthalmic lens containing 3,4-difluoroaniline were measured the UV-B transmittance of 3.8~30.4%, UV-A transmittance of 47.8%~74.4% and the visible transmittance of 86.2~91.0% respectively. Conclusions: Based on the results of this study, 2,4-difluoroaniline and 3,4-difluoroaniline can be used effectively as additive for UV-blocking ophthalmic contact lenses.
Graft copolymerized polycarboxylate(PC)-type superplasticizers which have carboxylic acid with $\pi$ bond among the molecular structure and polyethyleneglycol methyl ether methacrylate(PMEM) were synthesized by free radical reaction. To investigate their chemical structures and molecular weights, PCs were analyzed by FT-IR(fourier transform spectrometer), C-NMR(nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer) and GPC(gel permeation chromatograpy). When types of carboxylic acids(methacrylic acid, acrylic acid, maleic anhydride, and itaconic acid) and molar ratios of carboxylic acid/PMEM) were varied, adsorptive and fluid characteristics in cement paste were discussed. As the molar ratio of carboxylic acid/PMEM) was higher, amount adsorbed on the cement particles and the fluidity of cement paste by mini-slump spread testing method were increased. When main chain of PC was methacrylic acid, a larger amount was adsorbed on the cement particles. PCs with acrylic acid as main chain showed higher dispersing power. However, it was confirmed that PCs with dicarboxylic acids(maleic anhydride, itaconic acid) didn't have good adsorption and dispersibility.
A new one-shot process was employed to fabricate proton exchange membranes (PEMs) over conventional solvent-casting process. Here, PEMs containing nano-dispersed silica nanoparticles were fabricated using one-shot process similar to the bulk-molding compounds (BMC). Different components such as reactive dispersant, urethane acrylate nonionmer (UAN), styrene, styrene sulfuric acid and silica nano particles were dissolved in a single solvent dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) followed by copolymerization within a mold in the presence of radical initiator. We have successfully studied the water-swelling and proton conductivity of obtained nanocomposite membranes which are strongly depended on the surface property of dispersed silica nano particles. In case of dispersion of hydrophilic silica nanoparticles, the nanocomposite membranes exhibited an increase in water-swelling and a decrease in methanol permeability with almost unchanged proton conductivity compared to neat polymeric membrane. The reverse observations were achieved for hydrophobic silica nanoparticles. Hence, hydrophilic and hydrophobic silica nanoparticles were effectively dispersed in hydrophilic and hydrophobic medium respectively. Hydrophobic silica nanoparticles dispersed in hydrophobic domains of PEMs largely suppressed swelling of hydrophilic domains by absorbing water without interrupting proton conduction occurred in hydrophilic membrane. Consequently, proton conductivity and water-swelling could be freely controlled by simply dispersing silica nanopartilces within the membrane.

Purpose: The effect of pigmentation in circle contact lens on lens wearers' tear film stability was investigated in this study. Methods: Non-invasive tear film break-up times of 54 normal eyes before and after lens wearing in twenties and the portion of first tear breakup were measured. The frontal and back surface roughness of circle contact lens was further observed with a scanning electron microscope. The clear lens which was made of hilafilcon B and circle contact lenses which were made of hilafilcon B, polymacon and copolymer of HEMA NVP were tested. Results: Non-invasive tear film breakup time was significantly reduced compared with it before lens wearing. In some case, statistically significant difference in tear film breakup time was also observed between circle contact lenses. The tear file break-up was usually early started in lower than upper portion, and in temporal than nasal portion although there was variation in the lens material. The tear film break-up of circle contact lenses made of hilafilcon B was more commonly observed in peripheral portion(pigmented area) compared with clear contact lens made of same material. Conclusions: The present study revealed that the stability of tear film was affected by wearing circle contact lens and the result seems to be used as the basis for the problem solving that can occur due to the pigmentation when wearing circle contact lens.

PVC (polyvinyl chloride) intravenous fluid bags and tubes that contain DEHP (diethylhexyl phthalate) as a plasticizer have several associated disadvantages for intravenous injections. We investigated the drug absorption behaviors on the inner surface of an infusion tube that consisted of commercialized PVC/PU (polyurethane). We developed a non-PVC (polyolefin) tube in order to improve the efficacy of this drug administration method. We prepared four types of non-PVC (polyolefin) infusion tubes using a polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), syndiotactic 1,2-polybutadiene (PB), and styrene-ethylene (SE) copolymer elastomers were prepared using a single screw extruder. The four types of manufactured non-PVC (polyolefin) infusion tubes had good mechanical properties that were equivalent to PVC tube properties. The four types of prepared non-PVC (polyolefin) infusion tubes also prohibited drug absorption when compared to the commercialized PVC and PU tubes. Therefore, based on the results of this study, prepared non-PVC (polyolefin) tubes are good candidates for infusion because they prevent drug absorption and the release of DEHP.
Mesoporous silicate materials have been used as adsorbents for the removal of heavy metals from water by introducing functional groups such as thiol and amine. In this research, it was investigated whether surfactants used as templating agents in synthetic processes can act as adsorption sites for heavy metals. Three mesoporous silicates-SBA-15, MCM-41, and HMS were synthesized using, respectively, block copolymer, hexadecyltrimethylammoniumbromide (HDTMA), and dodecyamine as surfactants. X-ray diffraction and $N_2$ gas adsorption analysis confirmed that the mesoporous silicates were well prepared and FT-IR spectra resulted in the existence of the surfactants in as-synthesized mesoporous silicates and the removal of surfactants after calcination. The interactions between $Pb^{2+}$ ions and the mesoporous silicate materials with/without surfactants were observed. In adsorption kinetic experiments, it revealed that the calcined mesoporous silicates and the surfactant-loaded SBA-15 almost had no adsorption capacity for $Pb^{2+}$ ions. In contrast, the surfactant-loaded MCM-41 and HMS showed, respectively, the adsorption capacities of 26.60 and 115.16 mg/g which were acquired through the fits of adsorption kinetic data to the pseudo second order kinetic model. The adsorption capacities were comparable to those of other mesoporous adsorbents for heavy metals.
Recently, the hyperthermia treatment of malignant tissues has gained great attention as a biocompatible and benign method that facilitates successful cancer therapy compared to radiation and chemotherapy. In this study, superparamagnetic ($Fe_3O_4$) iron oxide nanoparticles (IONP) coated with biocompatible polymer (IONP@P(MPC/FOM)) for the purpose of hyperthermia treatment were prepared and related characterization were performed. IONPs with having 15 nm diameter were first prepared by coprecipitation and followed by surface modification with 4-cyanopentanoic acid dithiobenzoate (CTP) for reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) copolymerization by using 2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine (MPC) and fluorescein O-methacrylate (FOM) to form corona layer of P(MPC/FOM) on the surface of the IONP. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and dynamic light scattering (DLS) confirmed the morphology and hydrodynamic size of the IONP@P(MPC/FOM) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) confirmed the formation of P(MPC/FOM) corona layer, respectively. Exposing IONP dispersion to alternating magnetic field suggests that the IONP@P(MPC/FOM) aqueous dispersion with 0.2 wt.% can be used for hyperthermia treatment.
Purpose: This study evaluated the optical and physical and characteristics of soft contact lens polymerized with addition of 3-chloropyridine-4-carboxylic acid and 3-fluoropyridine-4-carboxylic acid in the basic hydrogel contact lens material. In particular, the utility of 3-chloropyridine-4-carboxylic acid and 3-fluoropyridine- 4-carboxylic acid as a hydrogel contact lens material was investigated. Methods: In this study, 3-chloropyridine-4-carboxylic acid and 3-fluoropyridine-4-carboxylic acid were used as additives. Also, 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate, acrylic acid, methyl methacrylate and a cross-linker EGDMA were co-polymerized in the presence of AIBN as an initiator. Results: The physical properties of the produced polymers were measured as followings. The water content of 34.54~37.15%, refractive index of 1.4320~1.4342, tensile strength of 0.2872~0.3608 kgf and contact angle of $57.82{\sim}79.57^{\circ}$, UV-B transmittance of 76.8~82.4% and UV-A transmittance of 84.6~86.6% were obtained respectively. Conclusions: Based on the results of this study, contact lens material containing 3-chloropyridine-4-carboxylic acid and 3-fluoropyridine-4-carboxylic acid is expected to be able to used as a material for high wettability and UV-block hydrogel contact lens.
Silicone hydrogels incorporated with poly(ethylene glycol)(PEG) were prepared and characterized to evaluate the effects of PEG on contact lenses. The silicone hydrogels were copolymerized with methacryloxypropyl tris(trimethylsiloxy) silane (TRIS), methyl methacrylate (MMA), N,N-dimethyl acrylamide (DMA) and PEG-containing monomers such as poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate (PEG- MEM). The silicone hydrogels were characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), electron spectroscopy of chemical analysis (ESCA), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Water absorbance, water contact angle and light transmittance of the silicone hydrogels were evaluated. The experiments of protein adsorption were also carried out to evaluate the protein adsorption in tears. The peak intensity of C-O bond was increased by the incorporation of PEG-containing monomers and thus PEG incorporation into silicone hydrogels could be confirmed. Phase separation was not shown by the SEM observation of the cross-section of silicone hydrogels. Water absorbancy was increased, while water contact angle and light transmittance were decreased with increasing incorporation of the PEG-containing monomers. The absorption of proteins in tears, albumin, lysozyme and $\gamma$-globulin, on the surface of silicone hydrogels was decreased with increasing incorporation of the PEG-containing monomers.
