Up until now, typography research and education have mainly been centered on two-dimensional environment and printing technology, such as the paper. However, this study is the result of this researcher's direct design and implementation of projects on typography aside from paper. Accordingly, this study is to provide an opportunity to raise the level of reason and expression used in visual communication to a new level and to expand its scope. To ensure the efficient progress of the project, this study was to identify the structure, system, and process of communication first. Furthermore, this study was to investigate two-dimensional and three-dimensional typography as the backbone of visual communication. In addition, several representative 3D typography works are analyzed in context and used as the conceptual framework of the project conducted for this study. Based on these results, this research verifies and suggests the possibility practically and objectively by creating the project series entitled Rhetorical Space in 3D typography. In addition, this research gives an opportunity to visualize ideas aimed at the development of character-based visual language and visual communication design in the realm of the more spatial, physical, and three-dimensional public environment.

  • Underground space, especially very-deep tunnel development in urban area, is a good alternative to solve the problem of insufficient ground space, and the need for underground space development is steadily increasing. However, due to the complex and time-consuming nature of design and construction, public conflicts related to the deep tunnel project are getting aggravating and more complex. In addition, since the public budget is mainly invested, when civil complaints arise, they often respond passively, resulting in amplification of conflicts or prolonging the deadlock in many cases. In this study, by analyzing the progress of major conflicts related to the construction of very-deep tunnels in urban area, the causes of conflicts, factors prolonging conflicts, and solutions are reviewed. Through a survey targeting ordinary citizens and tunnel experts, thoughts about the deep tunnel construction and major conflict factors were analyzed, and suggestions for minimizing conflicts were presented. The results of this study can be used to prepare alternatives such as various public involvement measures and improvement of project procedures to form a civic consensus on the construction of very-deep tunnels, and to prepare measures to improve prejudice against very-deep tunnels.

The literature review is conducted to analyze the system. Specifically, the North Korean law and North Korean dictionaries were carefully examined. The interviews with 25 North Korean refugees were conducted to grasp the exact state of the old age pension in North Korea. Major findings are as follows: the consistency between system and practices of the old age pension in North Korea is identified only certain portions of that. Beneficiaries(blue-collar workers, white-collar workers, farmers, soldiers, and employees in foreign-invested enterprises), contribution periods, earning-related schemes, the totalization of periods of coverage(workplace transitions), the absence of double benefits and early retirement pension, and the delivery system around Civic Service offices(Dong offices) are confirmed by complete consistency. Preservation age, variations in the implementation of the pension system by region, and premium of the old age pension are confirmed by partial consistency. The length of service, the labor regulation, lump-sum payment, and double dipping are confirmed by discrepancies. It's important that this study brings about a better understanding the old age pension in North Korea through various original texts of North Korea and interviews with refugees. The results of this study are expected to contribute to the policy production for the age income security system after the unification and to the spread of unification perspectives.

  • Seafarers are exposed to various unpredictable maritime risks due to the spatial specificity of the working environment of the sea; thus, sufficient compensation for injured crewmembers is needed. However, Korea does not provide such compensation. Therefore, this study attempted to examine the Maritime Labor Act and the Industrial Accident Insurance Act of Germany, an advanced European social insurance country, and derive implications compared to Korea. First, we investigated how compensations are managed by a public institution in Germany and by shipowners in Korea. Second, regarding the contents of accident compensation, Germany does not only provide continuous treatment and care through various support systems, but also operates various programs to enable a return to ship work. In contrast, Korea has a temporary compensation system that allows shipowners to avoid liability for accident compensation, which is disadvantageous to shipwrecked seafarers. Finally, in Germany, workers' compensation insurance is public, judged considering the origin of work, whereas in Korea, it is determined by shipowners or insurance companies. Therefore, it is necessary to establish a public institution in charge of crew accident compensation to ensure proper compensation for crewmembers in Korea and to improve the Seafarers Act or system to provide compensation for additional medical care, disability pension, and rehabilitation benefits.

  • This study focuses on Korea films of historical communication. Narrative analysis was conducted on the films in 2000s including , and <26 Years> that mainly have dealt with the 'Gwangju Democratization Movement'. As a result of the syntagmatic analysis, these films try to stabilize 'social imbalances' in the aspect of individuals and conceals issues of social structure. In addition, the result of paradigmatic analysis reveals that textual factors of 'active involvement of female characters', 'continuity of history through the survivors' demonstrate its strategies to publicize the historical truth. Consequently these films show its limitations that weakens historical meaning by placing unsolved problems of social structure as well as the love story. But rather than describing it as a history of the past, these films act as a catalyst to bring thins specific historical issue to our present lives and publicize it as a current issue. Therefore, the historical film not only allows current generation to remind to history but also to provide an opportunity to publicize the important issues of social structure in the present society.

  • Transformation towards multicultural society requires discussion on new concepts of citizenship which would overcome some limits of national citizenship developed on the basis of the nation-state. Citizenship can be defined as a relationship between individuals and their community, and conceptualized in a relation with identity. Citizenship also includes its spatial elements such as site and movement, place and public/private space, boundary and territory, flow and network, level and scale, etc. and in particular implies a multi-scalability of local, national, and global level. A new discussion on citizenship has emerged in Japan in shift to multicultural society, especially focusing on activities of local governments and grassroots social movements to support and ensure welfare services to and human rights of foreign immigrants in local communities, hence develops a concept of local citizenship. This concept seems to be highly significant for both foreign immigrants and Japanese dwellers for multicultural coexistence, but raises serious problems of separating local citizenship from formal national citizenship and from universal global citizenship. In order to resolve these problems, a new multiscalar concept of glocal citizenship which links interrelationally local, national and global citizenship. The concept of glocal citizenship is suggested to lead academically a new version of cosmopolitanism which embraces the universal and the particular in a dialectic manner, and to give strategically an alternative to multicultural coexistence policy and discourse and local citizenship discussion in Japan.
