  • Recent high-speed trains around the world have achieved remarkable improvement in speed. In Korea, the new high-speed train with maximum speed of 400km/h has been developing through the 'Future High-Speed Rail System Project'. The improvement in train speed brings numerous aerodynamic problems such as strong aerodynamic resistance, noise, drastic pressure variation due to the crosswind or passing by, micro-pressure wave at tunnel exit, and so on. Especially, the nose shape of high-speed train is closely related to the most of the aerodynamic problems. Also the pantograph has to be considered for noise prevention and detachment problems. In this paper, the project, 'Research on the Aerodynamic Technology Advancement of the High-Speed EMU' is introduced briefly, which is one of the efforts for the speed improvement of the 'HEMU400x'. Finally, two main results of train nose and pantograph will be shown. First, the optimization of the cross-sectional area distribution of the high-speed train nose to reduce tunnel micro-pressure wave, and second, robust design optimization of the panhead shape of a pantograph.

  • The low speed aerodynamic characteristics of modified sonic arc airfoil which is developed to fit the transonic regime are investigated. This airfoil is designed by using the shape function of sonic arc proposed by Schwendenman, the data of NACA0012, and commercial program Maple. In order to investigate the low speed aerodynamic characteristic of sonic arc airfoil, the numerical analysis is conducted below Mach number 0.3 and the results are compared and analyzed with it of NACA0012 airfoil. At each Mach number, the drag of modified sonic arc airfoil is less 1.5% than NACA0012's drag and the lift of modified sonic arc airfoil is less 2% than NACA0012's lift. The moment coefficient of modified sonic arc airfoil is also less 1.4% than it of NACA0012 at each Mach number.

  • Numerical simulation was carried out for the SNECMA modulatable thrust devices, with four different nozzle contraction angle $45^{\circ}$, $60^{\circ}$, $83^{\circ}$, and $90^{\circ}$, respectively. Results show that $83^{\circ}$ nozzle contraction is better in that it comes up with good thrust level with small aerodynamic load.

  • Propeller performance measurement system for commercial propeller was designed and applied to the wind tunnel test for 3 commercial propeller models with diameters of 30 inch. The thrust and torque of the propeller was directly measured by using 6-components balance installed on the rotating axis. The measurement system was validated by using wind tunnel balance calibration equipment. Propeller test stand including measurement and rotating system was validated by using QTP propeller. In the hovering condition, we compared the performance test results and the specifications of the commercial propeller provided by the manufacturer and confirmed that there are differences in the thrust and the torque. We measured the propeller performance with various wind speeds, propeller models and angles of attack and was summarized by thrust coefficients. We confirmed that the trend of the thrust coefficients was different in the low angle of attack and high angle of attack. An aerodynamics database that can be used for future aerodynamic design of an unmanned aerial vehicle was secured.

  • In this study, simultaneous aero-structural design was performed for HALE aircraft wing. The span and the shape of main spar were considered as design variables. To maximize aerodynamic performance and to minimize weight, multi-objective optimization was used. Nonlinear static aeroelastic analysis was performed to compute large deflection of wing. Design of experiment and response surface method were used to reduce computation cost in the design process. Also, aerodynamic performances of deformed wing and rigid wing were compared.

  • Geometrical design variables are numerically investigated to improve aerodynamic performance of the supersonic impulse turbine of a turbopump in a liquid rocket engine. Aerodynamic redesign was performed for maximization of the blade power. Four design variables considered are blade angle, blade thickness and radii of upper and lower arc blade with appropriate constraints. A fast Navier-Stokes solver was developed and Chien's k-$\varepsilon$ turbulence modelling was used for turbulence closure. In initial shape, a flow separation was found in the middle of blade chord. However, it disappeared in final shape via its geometrical design variable change. About 3.2 percent of blade power was increased from this research.

  • Aircraft design requires the intergration of several disciplines, inculding aerodynamics, structures, controls. To achieves advances in performance, each technology, or discipline must be more accurate in analysis and must be more highly intergrated. One of the important interdisciplinary interactions in mordern aircraft design is that of aerodynamics and structures. In this study, for increasing accuracy in each discipline's analysis, CFD for aerodynamic analysis and FEM for structurral analysis was used and, for considering important interdisciplinary interactions, aeroelastic effect was considered. As optimization algorithm, PBIL algorithm was used for global optima and was parallelized to alleviate the computational burden. The efficiency and accuracy of the present method was assesed by range maximiziation of reference of reference wing.
