Pedagogy of E-Learning in Engineering Classes Using Multimedia Contents: Case of K University (멀티미디어 콘텐츠 기반의 공과대학 이러닝 교수법 연구: K대학 사례)

  • Whether the engineering department of universities employs ideal usage of e-learning or not needs to be investigated as many engineering departments diversify the use of the e-learning elements for educational purpose. Applying the teaching and learning methods and characteristics would lead to better strategies which are applied to development of contents and deployment of the e-learning courses. This study examines the characteristics and approaches of the usage of e-learning elements used by some instructors who use multimedia contents in offline teaching and learning environment. The results of this study shows that the e-learning elements assist the face-to-face course and the interactions are manifested in the classroom rather than in online setting. Lecture, hands-on-practice, simulation, and PBL(Problem-based learning) are turned out to be the major teaching and learning methods. This study signifies the need for use of various teaching and learning methods by the instructors and provision of PBL environment.

A Comparison Analysis of Gender Sensitivity Among Faculty, Students, and Enterprisers in Engineering (공대 교수, 대학생, 기업가의 성인지력 비교 분석)

  • We surveyed perceptions of faculty, students, and enterprisers in engineering about gender issue in engineering. A total of 59 faculty members, 335 students (226 male, 109 female) of Korea National University of Transportation, and 28 employers of Chungbuk location were selected. The 25 survey questions for faculty, 30 for students, and 5 for employers were made. The analysis methods used included ${\chi}^2$ for cross analysis method. The results showed that faculty in general perceived differences between genders. They also perceived that women engineering students has a lack of leadership and low possibility of success in career in engineering. Also, they perceived disadvantages in application processes of women students. However, they expressed they did not reflect those factors in teaching and career advices. Women engineering majors showed low confidence in getting a job and success in career. They also thought they had no opportunities to gender-sensitive education in engineering courses. They were also very negative toward aptitude in engineering. These results were very similar to those of faculty. On the other hand, men students showed very low awareness of their women peers' perceptions. The perception of enterprisers was also different from faculty and students. These results indicate that there should be changes in perceptions of faculty and students in engineering for employments. For better education for women engineering majors, further research is needed.

The Effect of Reflection and Mentoring Based on Gender - Sensitive Teaching Strategies (성인지적 교수전략을 바탕으로 한 수업 성찰과 멘토링 효과)

  • This study is to investigate an effective instruction for female students in an engineering classroom through gender -sensitive teaching strategies by analysing recorded classroom instruction, reflective journals of professor, and mentoring instructions of A professor teaching "non-steel materials and design" in an engineering classroom. This study which used a qualitative approach for data collection and analysis showed changes of A professor in his way of teaching. The changes are: making rough lesson plan ${\rightarrow}$ making detailed lesson plan being satisfied with his teaching skills ${\rightarrow}$ trying to improve his teaching skills, using negative feedback ${\rightarrow}$ using positive feedback, pointing weaknesses as pre-engineers ${\rightarrow}$ providing detailed information needed to be engineers. This paper deals with the theory comparison between a conventional engineering education and new engineering education, in which conventional models may fail to give satisfactory results. Finally, we provide real application examples to evaluate the feasibility and generality of the proposed method in this paper.

A Study On The Correlation Between Attitude Toward Engineering Science And Academic Accomplishment According To Brain Dominance Thinking Of Students In The Department Of Engineering (공대 학생들의 두뇌 우성 사고에 따른 공학태도 및 학업성취도와의 관계 연구)

  • This study has its purpose of researching on the relevant variables which affect the attitude toward engineering science and brain dominance for the department of engineering students. The results of this study are as follows: First, the department of engineering students' attitude toward engineering science has shown the order of cognitive element (3.73), definitional element (3.05) and behavioral element (2.86), and in the actual context it is considered that it is necessary to establish a teaching-learning strategy which can reinforce the behavioral elements such as experiments and practices as well as can improve engineering-related cognitive ability. Second, the attitudes toward engineering science according to their brain dominance thinking (Type A: analyst, Type B: Administrator, Type C: Cooperator, and Type D: Jointer) have no significant difference, but the students of Type A who have the characteristics of 7 analyzing thinking have shown high academic accomplishment. Based on these results of study, it is necessary to make a change of the current teaching-learning stratery in accordance with the types of thinking of the students from the teaching-learning perspective. In particular, in order to develop the weak dominance properties and thinking type of individual learners, the change in teacher's recognition that the teacher's teaching-learning strategy and practice is important has to take precedence.
