  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the combustion emission characteristics by the effect of secondary air injection and variation of the excess air ratio in combustion field of model gas turbine combustor. For this purpose, mean temperature, CO, $CO_2$, $O_2$ and HC concentrations were measured by changing excess air ratio and secondary air injection. As a result of this study, mean temperature was decreased and CO, HC emission increased by increasing the excess air ratio of secondary air. Therefore, this results showed the secondary air injection effected strongly on the flame structure and combustion emission characteristics.

  • A three-dimensional model has been developed for pulverized coal combusters and gasifiers. Coal devolatilization, heterogeneous char oxidation, gas particle interchange, radiation, gas phase oxidation, primary and secondary stream mixing, and heat losses are considered. A finite difference method was used to solve the ordinary non-linear differential equations. The effects of primary and secondary stream flow ratio and coal particle size are investigated.

  • This study was performed to obtain the basic data which can be applied to use of foaming mortars. The results obtained were summarized as follows ; 1. The lowest water-cement ratios were shown at the mixing ratio of 1 : 1. But, it was gradually increased in poorer mixing ratio and decreased in more addition of foaming agent. The water-cement ratios were decreased up to 1.6-53.1% by mix-foaming type and 4.4-24.1% by pre-foamed type than cement mortar. 2. The highest bulk densities were shown at the mixing ratio of 1 : 1. But, it was gradually decreased in poorer mixing ratio and more addition of foaming agent. The decreasing rates of bulk densities were increased in richer mixing ratio and more addition of foaming agent. 3. The bulk densities were decreased up to 38.8-55.9% by mix-foaming type and 9.7-23.6% by pre-foamed type than cement mortar. 4. The lowest absorption rates were shown at the mixing ratio of 1 : 1. But, it was gradually increased in poorer mixing ratio and more addition of foaming agent. The increasing rates of absorption rates were increased in richer mixing ratio and more addition of foaming agent. 5. Absorption rates when immersed in 72hours were shown up to 3.41-5.85 times greater by mix-foaming type and 1.05-1.55 times greater by pre-foamed type than those of cement mortar. it was significantly higher at the early stage of immersed time than cement mortar. 6. The highest strengths were shown at the mixing ratio of 1 : 1. But, it was gradually decreased in poorer mixing ratio and more addition of foaming agent. The decreasing rates of strengths were increased in poorer mixing ratio and more addition of foaming agent. 7. The strengths were decreased up to 77.0-92.8% by mix-foaming type and 36.7-74.4% by pre-foamed type than cement mortar. 8. The lowest air contents were shown at the mixing ratio of 1 : 1. But, it was gradually increased in poorer mixing ratio and more addition of foaming agent. The increasing rates of air contents were increased in richer mixing ratio and more addition of foaming agent. 9. Air contents were shown up to 26.0-63.8 times greater by mix-foaming type and 5.8-17.7 times greater by pre-foamed type than those of cement mortar. 10. The correlations between bulk density, absorption rate, compressive strength and air content were highly significant. The multiple regression equations of bulk density, absorption rate, compressive strength, tensile strength, bending strength and air content were computed depending on a function of mixing ratio and addition of foaming agent. They were generally highly significant.

  • In order to use food wastes for the source of fermented feed for pigs, this study was aimed to produce better culture inoculum by the aeration and addition of pig' s blood meal as sub nutrient. For the preparation of inoculum as bacterial strain, Lactobacillus brevis isolated from pig intestine, and a yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae from strawberries were used. Molasses and whey were used as main ingredients for the culture solution as well as yeast extract and other ingredients as sub nutrients. As the experimental result, aeration showed a positive effect to enhance viable cell count or retarding death phase. Although sub nutrient yeast extracts were replaced with pig's blood meal, fermentation characteristics were almost similar to that of yeast extract. When the inoculum was stored at room temperature, L. brevis and S. cerevisiae maintained the viable cell concentration of approximately 8 log cfu/mL for 1 week. 2 Days after the culture solution was mixed with food waste, the number of unwanted bacteria had rapidly increased, but E.coli was not detected for 5 days.

  • When reformer for fuel cell is used, CO in hydrogen gas leads to a seriously decreased membrane electrode assembly (MEA) performance by catalyst poisoning. The effect of CO on performance of modified MEA by sputtering method is studied in this paper. The experimental results show that sputtered Pt and Ru thin film improve a single cell performance of MEA and sputtered metal thin film has a CO tolerance. The air injection process on anode show improved CO tolerance test result. Moreover, Pt, Ru and PtRu thin film by sputtering had influence on the CO tolerance with air injection process.

  • Diffused Aeration System (DAS) is one of the remediation methods used for removing contaminants in groundwater and this method brings air bubbles in contact with contaminated water, afterwards transferring contaminants in liquid phase into air phase. In this study, three applicability tests using DAS were conducted in two highly contaminated sites. For these tests, diffused air bubbles are generated with a in-flow rate of 17.1, 44.8 and 76.5 (1/min), respectively. The concentrations of TCE in grounwater and air phase were measured during the tests. The measured results showed that TCE concentration hit the highest value after 6~8 min and afterwards decreased gradually. Also, it was observed that the TCE concentration in air phase changed depending on the rate of diffused aeration. In addition, $K_La$ values from liquid to air phase were calculated based on the test results and those of three tests (test 1, 2 3) were 0.444, 1.158 and 1.836(1/hr), respectively. From the comparison of $K_La$ values, the faster air in-flow rate is, the higher the efficiency of the DAS is.

  • Although nerve injury is the most common complication of pneumatic tourniquets, it is said to be rare, with few case reports. We describe two cases of paralysis after upper extremity surgery to highlight this risk. Ulnar, median and radial neuropathies were diagnosed after surgery was performed on a man for left hand reconstruction, presumably due to a prolonged total inflation time of 14 hours despite conventional break times. A woman who received surgery for a crushed hand presented with radial neuropathy, the most probable cause being malfunction and automatic inflation of the tourniquet. These cases illustrate the diversity of tourniquet paralysis, with symptomatic progress not necessarily following electromyography results. The considerable discomfort to patients warrants careful use of tourniquets for neuropathy prevention.

  • We have measured the optical spectra while varying the temperature of photonic crystal fibers (PCFs) with periodic air holes in the cladding. These are liquid crystal infiltrated fibers. For the liquid crystal infiltrated PCFs, we obtained the transmission of several wavelengths at specific temperatures. The transmission power could be reduced by about $10\sim15dB$ by varying the applied temperature in the liquid crystal PCF. We expect that it is applicable as a wavelength switching device in the specific wavelength band.
