Effect of Corrugation Fluting on the Compressive Strength of Corrugated Fiberboard Box for Food Packaging (골판지의 골 성형이 식품포장용 골판지 상자의 압축강도에 미치는 영향)

  • In this study, we performed corrugation fluting experiments to examine the relationship between high-low corrugation of a corrugated medium and compressive strength of corrugated containers for food packaging. A low-grade corrugated medium was found to suffer from weak tensile resistance and to be prone to stealing, which tends to produce low corrugation. In contrast, a medium with a large corrugation deviation often caused slimming during fluting and produced irregular corrugations. Experiments of high-low corrugation distribution according to corrugated medium grades indicate that a high grade medium shows a smaller ratio of low corrugation. The thickness of corrugated fiberboard is weakly correlated to the basis weight of medium, yet positively correlated to the medium thickness (y=3.9732x+4.2712, $R^{2}=0.8142$) and inversely proportional to the medium density (y=-3.1213x+6.8736, $R^{2}=0.9919$). Compressive strength of a corrugated fiberboard box is low, if made of corrugated medium with large low corrugation distribution. Compressive strength showed 13% variation with respect to medium grades and 21% variation for various test samples. The corrugation fluting of a corrugated medium is related to physical properties such as basis thickness and density.

Improvement of Water Resistant Properties of a Linerboard for Corrugated Fiberboard Box by Coating with Na-alginate (알긴산 코팅에 의한 골판지 상자 제조용 라이너 원지의 수분저항성 증진)

  • To improve water resistance of paperboard used to manufacture the corrugated boxes, effect of surface coating of the liner- board with Na-alginate was investigated by determining the optimum processing conditions such as a optimum alginate concentration for surface coating, plasticizer content, concentration of divalent cations their immersion times, For the surface coating of the liner-board, 2.5% Na-alginate solution was found to be the optimum concentration, and the concentration of glycerol used as plasticizer was effective when 35% alginate concentration was use was Used Immersion of the alginate coated paperboard for 3 min in a $CaCl_2$ solution improved the water resistance properties. As a divalent cation for the insolubilization of the alginate films, $Cu^{2+}$ was found to be as effective as $Ca^{2+}$. Among the platicizers tested, sorbitol was the most effective in reducing water vapor permeability and water solubility of alginate coated paperboard.

  • The purpose of this research was to complete basic study about standardization of corrugated fibreboard containers for apples. Various corrugated fibreboard containers are studied and the results are shown below. 1. WLK, SK, and KA are usually used for outer liner boards, S and $K_2$ are for medium or inner liner boards. 2. According to the study, about twenty different liner compositions are currently used for apple packaging. However, for the containers with white liner board, the liner composition is WLK210/M200/S120/$M200/K_{2}200$, for the containers with colored liner board, SK180/M200/S120/$M200/K_{2}200$ are mostly used. 3. Sixteen percents of cost saving are expected when subsitute white outer liner boards by those of colored.

Survey on packaging status and changes in quality of tomato and paprika using different packaging types (토마토와 파프리카의 포장실태조사 및 포장재 종류에 따른 품질변화)

  • This study aimed to evaluate the commercialized packaging status of tomato and paprika, and to investigate the effect of different packaging materials on the quality of tomato and paprika during storage. Packaging statuses were surveyed at a department store, wholesale market, and supermarket in Seoul, Korea. Materials used for packaging tomato and paprika were cartons, polypropylene (PP), low-density polyethylene (LDPE), polystyrene (PS), and polyvinyl chloride (PVC). Tomato and paprika were packaged by using corrugated boxes, Styrofoam trays, PP film, and PVC film. The weight loss and hardness of non-packaged tomato and paprika were significantly different after 48 hr to the initial values (p<0.05). Box-packaged tomatoes had the lowest pH values and showed significantly higher soluble solid contents (p<0.05). However, there were no significant differences in among other packaging materials. For paprika, the ${\Delta}E$ values of PVC wrapping were higher than those of other packagings. Hence, the results demonstrated that a corrugated box with PP film and PP film bags with four holes plus wire-tying were most able to maintain the overall qualities of tomato and paprika, respectively, during storage.

  • 1856년 7월 7일 영국에서 에드워드 찰스 힐리와 에드워드 엘리스 알렌 (Edward Charles Healey & Edward Ellis Allen)에 의해 골판지가 처음 발명되었고, 15년후인 1871년 12월 19일에 현재의 골판지상자 형태의 특허가 미국의 알버트 L. 존스(Albert. L. Jones)에게 취득 된지 130여년이상이 지난 이 시대에는 실로 다양한 분야에서 골판지를 사용하고 있지만, 주 사용분야는 포장산업의 분야이다. 과거에는 포장의 주목적은 첫째 포장 내용물(상품)의 보호 둘째 상품의 운송과 적재 및 취급의 편리성 셋째 상품 구매동기 유발의 순서이었으나 최근에는 첫째와 둘째의 목적은 필수불가결한 것이고 세번째의 상품 구매동기 유발의 목적에 더 큰 비중이 있는 추세이다. 따라서 포장재의 규격은 생산자의 입장에서는 보다 단순해지고 규격화 되는 것이 생산코스트의 절감과 생산성 향상의 지름길이지만 (그러나 더욱 복잡해지고 비규격화 되는 것이 제품 부가가치가 더 높을 수도 있기 때문에 여기에는 보다 신중한 판단이 필요하다)각종 통신기술, 인터넷과 I.T산업의 발달과 더불어 소비자가 언제라도 상품의 다양한 정보에 쉽게 접할 수 있는 이시대에는, 다양한 소비계층의 NEED를모두 만족시켜 줄려고 하는 상품 개발자의 제품설계 및 개발과 판매전략에 의해 더욱 더 상품은 다양해지고 이에 따라서 포장재의 형태도 더욱 다양해지고 복잡해지고 있다. (필자의 판단으로는 앞으로 보다 더 다양해지고 복잡해지고 있는 추세이다.) 즉 다시 말하면 이러한 다양한 형태의 포장재의 변화를 수용하여, 가장 높은 가격 경쟁력으로, 적시에 가장 빠르게 생산하며 공급할 수 있는 능력을 갖춘 포장재 제조업자 만이 미래에는 적자생존 할 수 있다는 결론이다.
