Experiments were performed to study the cyclic behavior of framed steel walls with thin web plates. Five specimens of single-bay and three-story steel plate walls were tested for cyclic lateral load. The parameters for the test specimens included the plate thickness and the column strength. Based on the test results, the strength, deformability, and energy dissipation capacity of the framed steel walls were studied. The test results showed that the behavioral characteristics of the framed steel walls with thin web plates were different in many aspects from those of the conventional braced frame, and the steel wall with a stiffened web plate exhibited cantilever action, high strength, and low ductility. With the framed steel plate walls, local plate buckling and tension-field action developed in the thin web plates, and plastic deformation was uniformly distributed along the wall's height. As a result, the framed steel plate walls exhibited combined flexural and shear deformation, but they also showed high strength and energy dissipation capacity. Moreover, such walls have high deformability, which was equivalent to that of the conventional moment frame. Frame members such as columns and beams, however, must be designed to resist the tension-field action of the thin web plates. If the column does not have sufficient strength, and if its sections are not compact enough, the overall strength of the framed steel wall might be significantly decreased by the development of the soft-story mechanism. The framed steel walls with thin web plates have advantages, such as high deformability and high strength. Therefore, they can be used as ductile elements in earthquake-resistant systems.
This study presents an effective optimal technique to control quantitatively lateral drift for tall steel braced frames subject to horizontal loads. In this paper, the displacement sensitivity depending on behavior characteristics of steel braced frames is established, and also the approximation concept that has the generality of the mathematical programming and can efficiently solve large scale problems is introduced. Especially, the commercially available standard steel sections are used for the discrete selection of member sizes. Three types of 12-story braced frames and a 30-story braced framework are presented to illustrate the features of the quantitative lateral drift control technique proposed in this study.

The objective of this research is to evaluate the seismic performance of steel intermediate moment frames(IMFs) with different heights. The seimic performance is conducted according to ATC-63. Three-, six, nine- and twelve-story IMFs are designed according to KBC 2009. The connection is modeled to have a drift capacity of 0.02rad, which is required for IMF connections. This study shows that the probability of collapse increases with an increase in the height of the frame. Nine- and twelve-story frames did not satisfy the requirement specified in ATC-63.

In this study a seismic retrofit scheme for the reinforced concrete moment framed structures was investigated using steel bracing and moment frames. The analysis model structure is a 3-story 3-bay moment frame structure designed only for gravity load. The stress/strain concentration in brace-RC frame connection was investigated using finite element analysis. To prevent premature joint failure, steel moment frames were placed inside of middle bay of the RC frame. Two types of braces, steel braces and buckling restrained braces(BRBs), were used for retrofit, and the ductility and the strength of the structure before and after the retrofit were compared using nonlinear static and dynamic analyses. According to the analysis results, the strength and ductility of the structure retrofitted by the moment frames and braces increased significantly. The added steel frame did not contribute significantly to the increase of lateral strength mainly because the size is relatively small.

In this paper, the optimal seismic design method for inducing the beam-hinge collapse mechanism of steel moment frames is presented. This uses the non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm II(NSGA-II) as an optimal algorithm. The constraint condition for preventing the occurrence of plastic hinges at columns is used to induce the beam-hinge collapse mechanism. This method uses two objective functions to minimize the structural weight and maximize the dissipated energy. The proposed method is verified by the application to nine story steel moment frame example. The minimum column-to-beam strength ratio to induce the beam-hinge collapse mechanism are investigated based on the simulation results. To identify the influence of panel zone on the minimum column-to-beam strength ratio, three analytic modeling methods(nonlinear centerline model without rigid end offsets, nonlinear centerline model with rigid end offsets, nonlinear model with panel zones) are used.

Recently, various types of structural systems for skyscrapers are studied as the height and size of the building structures rapidly increase due to social and economical needs. The mega frame system among them, which is the structural system developed recently, is known as a suitable structural system for skyscrapers because this structural system has sufficient stiffness against the lateral forces by combination of mega members which consist of many columns and girders. Since the mega frame structure has significant numbers of elements and nodes, it takes tremendous times and computer memories to analyze and design the structures. Therefore, the exclusive structural analysis program for mega frame system is developed to reduce the efforts and time required for the analysis and design of mega frame structure. To this end, an efficient modelling technique using the characteristics of mega frame structures and an efficient analytical model, which uses a few DOFs selected by the user using the matrix condensation method, are developed in this study. Static and dynamic analyses are conducted using an example structure. The effectiveness and accuracy of the developed program we verified by the comparison between the results of the proposed method and the conventional method.
A refined method of analysis which is called the Advanced Analysis has been introduced This method is to consider the intial member imperfection residual stress and second-order effects so as to estimate the overall behavior of steel frame accurately Based on the refined plastic hinge method that is more suitable and practical in design practice. the program RPH-2DF is coded using the log model which represents the moment-rotation relationship of connection. The validity of this program is examined by frame test data. Finally to investigate the difference between behaviors of rigid and semi-rigid frame. the 10-story frame analysis results designed by MIDAS-GEN v4.2.2 are compared with the results by RPH-2DF.

This study summarizes the results of a research project aimed at investigating the inelastic rotation capacity of beam-column connections of reinforced concrete moment frames. A total of 91 test specimens for beam-column joint connections were examined in detail, and 28 specimens were classified as special moment frame connections based on the design and detailing requirements in the ACI 318-02 Provisions. Then the acceptance criteria, originally defined for steel moment frame connections in the AISC-02 Seismic Provisions, were used to evaluate the joint connections of concrete moment frames. Twenty-seven out of 28 test specimens that satisfy the design requirements for special moment frame structures provide sufficient strength and are ductile up to a plastic rotation of 0.03 rad. without any major degradation in strength. Joint shear stress, column-to-beam flexural strength ratio, and transverse reinforcement ratio in a joint all play a key role in good performance of the connections.

Recently, the resizing algorithms based on the displacement participation factors have been developed for sizing members to satisfy stiffness criteria. It is proved that this resizing algorithms made for utilizing worker's stiffness design are practical and rational due to the simplicity and convenience of the method. The resizing algorithm can be practically and effectively applied to drift design of buildings. However, the researches on the change of inelastic behavior by the resizing algorithm has been insufficient. To identify the effect on the inelastic behavior of buildings by the resizing method, this study used the reinforced concrete shear wall-frame example. Through the application of the resizing method, the weights of shear wall in the lower class and the weights of columns and beams in the upper class increased respectively. And the initial stiffness of the building increased and the ductility of the buildings had similar with that of the initial structure.
In this study, the effects of the inelastic shear behavior of beam-column joint and the vertical distribution of lateral load are evaluated considering higher modes on the response of RC OMRF using the pushover analysis. A structure used for the analysis was a 5-story structure located at site class SB and seismic design category C, which was designed in accordance with KBC2009. Bending moment-curvature relationship for beam and column was identified using fiber model. Also, bending moment-rotation relationship for beam-column joint was calculated using simple and unified joint shear behavior model and moment equilibrium relationship for the joint. The results of pushover analysis showed that, although the rigid beam-column joint overestimated the stiffness and strength of the structure, the inelastic shear behavior of beam-column joint could be neglected in the process of structural design since the average response modification factor satisfied the criteria of KBC2009 for RC OMRF independent to inelastic behavior of joint.
