The aggregates made of clay, carbon and $Fe_2O_3$ were prepared to investigate the mechanism of black core formation and the property differences at various sintering atmospheres. The aggregates were sintered at oxidized, neutralized and reduced atmospheres. The specific gravity, absorption rate, percent of black core area were measured at various compositions and sintering atmospheres. The aggregates sintered at oxidized atmosphere showed clear border between shell and black core area. Hence, the aggregates sintered at reduced and neutralized atmospheres showed only black core area in the cross-section of the aggregates. The specific gravity of the aggregates sintered at reduced atmosphere increased with increasing carbon contents and that was the lowest of all aggregates sintered at various atmospheres. Adsorption rate increased with increasing carbon contents at all atmospheres.
Since the concrete covers most structures in modern architecture and it is composed of aggregates of about 75%, the appropriate selection of aggregates is valuable for the durability of concrete. A major cause of the expansion of mortar-bar measured by ASTM C 227-90 has been accounted by the alkali-aggregate reaction. This study carried out designed experiments on some aggregates including basalt and sandstone, to classify the expansion factors into the alkali-aggregate reaction, the increase of the gel pore volume, and the interstitial water that could expand physically the cracks or foliation developed in aggregates itself. The quantitative analyses of expansion by each factor indicated that the interstitial water and/or the alkali-aggregate reaction had major roles in the concrete expansion. Thus, if the supplied aggregates have deteriorated the structural framework, it is important to investigate the exact causes through this suggested method.

In this paper, a small-scale model testing system was developed using a series of small-scale model tests to analyze the mechanism of compaction pile formation and evaluate the quality of controlled grading aggregates proposed as an alternative material to the sand compaction pile (SCP) method and granular compaction pile (GCP). These are the most typical ground improvement methods in field practice, particularly for soft grounds. However, the SCP has faced difficulties due to the supply shortage of natural sand and the corresponding price surge of sand. The GCP is limited in marine soft grounds because of the failure occurring at the pile tip caused by excessive expansion of the deeper bulbs, leading to uneven bulb formation. The uniformity of compacted pile bulbs is critical to ensuring the bearing capacity and quality of the compaction pile. This study aims to evaluate the performance of the new material and controlled grading aggregates using small-scale model tests simulating field compaction process to investigate its potential application in comparison with SCP. The compaction piles are examined in four cases according to different materials used for compaction pile and clay strength. The compaction pile materials, which are made of sand and controlled grading aggregates, used in this study were compared to reveal the mechanism of the bulb creation. The experimental data confirm that the bulb formation quality of the traditional sand and the new material, controlled grading aggregates are comparable. The compaction pile made of controlled grading aggregates presents higher bearing capacity than that of marine sand.

If the properties of artificial lightweight aggregates produced by rotary kiln can be predicted by using a simulator equipped with a small electric furnace and a specially designed device for specimen movement, large amount of raw materials and plenty of test time can be saved to produce test products of lightweight aggregates. In this study a simulator for the accurate prediction of the artificial lightweight aggregates produced by rotary kiln was assembled by our own design and the properties of lightweight aggregates produced by both the simulator and rotary kiln were compared to speculate its usefulness. The average diameter of aggregates was 8 mm and atmosphere in the furnace was controlled by the amount of carbon powders. Specific gravity, absorption rate (%), black-core area in the cross-sectional view of both aggregates were measured and compared. Unlike oxydizing atmosphere, both specific gravity and absorption rate of the aggregates sintered at reducing atmosphere were increased with increasing carbon addition. It is concluded that the sintering atmosphere was the closest to that of the rotary kiln when the carbon addition was 0.7 g to make a reducing atmosphere in the furnace and the properties of both agreggates was also similar to each other.
Based on the supply location, demand location, and transportation network, aggregate supply-demand characteristics and aggregate distribution status were analyzed from the results of the closest distance, service areas, and location-allocation scenarios using GIS network analysis. As a result, it was found that the average transport distance of aggregates from the supplier was 6 km on average, the average range of 7 km for sand, and 10 km for gravel was found to reach the destination. In particular, the simulated service area covers about 92% in Seoul-Gyeonggi Province, 85% in Busan-Ulsan-Gyeongnam Province, and more than 90% in Daejeon-Sejong-Chungnam Province. These results have a significant implication in quantitatively interpreting primary data on aggregate supply-demand. Furthermore, these results suggest the possibility of a wide-area quantitative analysis of aggregate supply regions necessary for establishing a basic aggregate plan. The results also evaluated by the site-allocation scenario show that aggregate supply may be possible through companies less than 200 with large-amounts quarries, which is the 700 companies currently supplying small amounts of aggregates on the country. Therefore, in terms of distribution of aggregates, a policy approach is needed to form an appropriate market for regions with high and low density of aggregate supply services, and the necessity of regional distribution and re-evaluation is suggested through an aggregate supply analysis demand across the country. Furthermore, in analyzing the supply-demand network for the aggregate market, additional research is needed to establish long-term policies for the aggregate industry and related industries.

Lightweight aggregate which is composed of sintered polycrystalline materials usually has a certain portion of pores inside of it. Because of such a structural characteristics, it tends to that movement of water in aggregate shows an abnormal behavior against the change of outside environment. In general, water movement behavior is controlled by porosity, distribution of pore size; however, dense surface layer will also affect water movement behavior in case of artificially sintered aggregates. Factors affecting water movement behavior in the aggregate are pore distribution, pore shape, pre-wetting method, etc. In this study, absorption characteristics of aggregate under the pressure and absorption rate according to water dipping time are analyzed for the basis of pressure pumping of lightweight concrete. Two kinds of aggregates were used for the test: one is made by 'L' company in Germany and the other is of our own made at the pilot plant in Kyonggi University. Absorption rate of aggregate is measured according to water dipping time, vacuum pressure, and quenching condition. Absorption rate of aggregate with $300^{\circ}C$ quenching is higher than that of aggregate with 24 hr water dipping. Generally the more vacuum the higher water absorption rate. Water absorption rate of 'L' aggregate under -300 mmHg is 54 % higher than that of aggregate with 24 hr water dipping; however, only 2 % increase in water absorption was measured for the K622 and K73 which were of our own.

Plastic wastes generated from household waste are separated by mixed discharge with foreign substances, and recycling is relatively low. In this study, the effect of the ratio and content of mixed plastic waste coarse aggregate(MPWCA)s and mixed plastic waste fine aggregate(MPWFA)s filled with blast furnace slag fine powder on the slump and compressive strength of concrete was evaluated experimentally. The MPWCAs were found to have a similar fineness modulus, but have a single particle size distribution with a smaller particle size compared to coarse aggregates. However, the MPWFAs were found to have a single particle size distribution with a larger fineness modulus and particle size compared to fine aggregates. Meanwhile, the effect of improving the density and filling pores by the blast furnace slag fine power was found to be greater in the MPWFA compared to the MPWCA. As the amount of the mixed plastic waste aggregate(MPWA)s increased, the slump and compressive strength of concrete decreased. In particular, the lower the slump and compressive strength of concrete was found to decrease the greater the amount of MPWFA than MPWCA when the amount of MPWA was the same. This is because of the entrapped air and voids formed under the angular- and ROD-shaped aggregates among the MPWFAs. On the other hand, the addition of the admixture and the increase in the unit amount of cement were found to be effective in improving the compressive strength of the concrete with MPWAs.
To investigate the expression pattern of noncollagenous bone matrix proteins such as osteonectin(OSN), osteopontin(OPN) and osteocalcin(OSC) mRNA during bony healing procedure induced by guided bone regeneration method, we made artificial defects on bilateral femur of rats. Then induced bony healing by application of a nonabsorbable PTFE membrane in experimental sites and without its application in control sites for 3 weeks. The mRNA expression pattern at specimens obtained at 1, 2 and 3 weeks after operation was detected by in situ hybridization method using its antisense mRNA probes. The experimental sites revealed more rapid and favorable bony healing than control sites and new bone formation was limited within defected area by inhibitory activity of bone marrow cells. In experimental sites, the OSN and OSC mRNA were expressed strongly on osteoblasts of regenerating cortical bone at 1st week and on osteoblasts lining the trabecular bone in marrow space at 3rd week, whereas, in control sites, their expression were noted on osteoblasts lining the reactively formed sponge bones at 2nd and 3rd week. In addition, the OPN mRNA was expressed on osteoblasts and osteoclasts at sites of remodeling and osteocytes of remained trabecular bone of defected area in experimental sites and on macrophages at 1st week and osteoclasts at sites of remolding at 2nd and 3rd week in control sites. The above findings suggest that the more rapid and favorable bony healing might be induced by blocking of invading fibrous connective tissue into bony defects. And the earlier expression of OSN and OSC mRNA on osteoblasts of experimental sites suggest that the formation and resorption of regenerating bone was more rapidly progressed in confined spaces made by applicate membranes.
To investigate the sequential changes in microvascular architecture and osseous regeneration during the bony healing after an application of the guided tissue regeneration method, we made artificial defects measuring $0.7cm{\times}0.3cm$ in size on femoral bones of rats measuring about 200gm and applied non-absorbable TEFE membrane at experimental sites but not at control sites. Then we observed the sequential changes and correlations between new vacuolation and bony regeneration using microvascular corrosion cast method and routine light microscopic observation at 1, 2 and 3 weeks after operation, respectively. The results showed that there were close relationships between regeneration of microvasculature and bone. In early phase, the invasion of granulation tissue at control sites delayed bony regeneration, however, in later phase, there was no remarkable differences in bony regeneration between control and experimental sites. The placement of barrier also affected in revascularization of regenerating bony defects. This is, the experimental sites showed parallel arranged nutritional vessels along long axis with well developed retiform plexus whereas the control revealed vertical invasion of microvasculature from outside of marrow space through bony defects which was also rearrange with time into parallel pattern with a vertical plexus but lesser organized than that of experimental sites. These findings suggest that the reconstruction of regenerating vasculature within the marrow cavity only may be sufficient and/or more be efficient in regeneration of bony defects.

The three factors that determine the strength of concrete are the strength of cement paste, aggregate and ITZ(Interfacial Transition Zone) between aggregate and cement paste. Out of these, the strength of ITZ is the most vulnerable. ITZ is formed in 10~50㎛, the ratio of calcium hydroxide is high, and CSH appears low ratio. A high calcium hydroxide ratio causes a decrease in the bond strength of ITZ. ITZ is due to further weak area. The problem of ITZ appears as a more disadvantageous factor when it used lightweight aggregate. The previous study of ITZ properties have measured interfacial toughness, identified influencing factors ITZ, and it progressed SEM and XRD analysis on cement matrix without using coarse aggregates. also it was identified microstructure using EMPA-BSE equipment. However, in previous studies, it is difficult to understand the microstructure and mechanical properties. Therefore, in this study, a method of measuring electrical resistance using EIS(Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy) measuring equipment was adopted to identify the ITZ between natural aggregate and lightweight aggregate, and it was tested the change of ITZ by surface coating of lightweight aggregate with ground granulated blast furnace slag. As a result, the compressive strength of natural aggregate and lightweight aggregate appear high strength of natural aggregate with high density, surface coating lightweight aggregate appear strength higher than natural aggregate. The electrical resistivity of ITZ according to the aggregate appeared difference.
