  • A paleomagnetic investigation for the Cretaceous rocks in the Buyeo and Hampyeong Basins, located out of the Gyeongsang Basin, was carried out in order to elucidate the paleomagnetic directions in conjunction with the formation of the basins. Typical stepwise thermal demagnetization and measurement methods were used to determine the directions of characteristic remanent magnetizations (ChRMs). The mean direction of the sedimentary rocks from the Buyeo Basin after bedding correction $(D/I=356.5^{\circ}/61.5^{\circ},\;k=39.3\;\alpha_{95}=7.4^{\circ})$, is more dispersed than that before bedding correction $(D/I=356.5^{\circ}/61.5^{\circ},\;k=39.3\;\alpha_{95}=7.4^{\circ})$, which suggests that the rocks in the Buyeo Basin were remagnetized. However, the statistics and dispersion of the ChRM directions after bedding correction are still acceptable and the paleomagnetic pole position after tilt correction $(Lat./Long.=69.3^{\circ}N/186.7^{\circ}E,\;K=11.6\;A_{95}=14.0^{\circ})$ is closer to that of the Late Cretaceous pole of the Korean Peninsula. More detailed study is needed to confirm the nature of the remagnetization in the Buyeo Basin. On the other hand, the paleomagnetic pole before bedding correction $(Lat./Long.=81.6^{\circ}N/106.9^{\circ}E,\;K=25.1\;A_{95}=9.3^{\circ})$ is positioned near the paleogene pole of the Eurasian APWP. The mean ChRM direction of the sedimentary rocks from the Hampyeong Basin after bedding correction is $D/I=32.5^{\circ}/55.4^{\circ},\;(k=35.6,\;\alpha_{95}=8.7^{\circ})$. It is more clustered than that before bedding correction $D/I=18.3^{\circ}/62.5^{\circ},\;k=14.1,\;\alpha_{95}=14.2^{\circ})$, indicating that the ChRM was acquired before tilting of the strata. The paleomagnetic pole position of the Cretaceous sedimentary rocks in the Hampyeong Basin, averaged out of site pole positions calculated from the tilt-corrected ChRMs, is $Lat./Long.=63.9^{\circ}N/202.7^{\circ}E,\;(K=21.3,\;A_{95}=7.6^{\circ})$, similar to the Late Cretaceous paleomagnetic pole of the Korean Peninsula $(Lat./Long.=70.9^{\circ}N/215.4^{\circ}E,\;A_{95}=5.3^{\circ})$, suggesting that the Hampyeong Basin has been stable since the Late Cretaceous period. One normal and two reversed ChRM directions are revealed through the measurements of the volcanic rocks from the Hampyeong Basin. Although these normal and reversed directions are not exactly antipodal, it is interpreted that the normal direction is the representative primary direction of the volcanic rocks of the Hampyeong Basin and the mixed polarity is the records of geomagnetic field at the time of the formation of the volcanic rocks. Paleomagnetic poles are at $Lat./Long.=70.2^{\circ}N/199.5^{\circ}E,\;(K=18.1,\;A_{95}=9.6^{\circ})$ for the normal direction, and $Lat./Long.=65.5^{\circ}S/251.3^{\circ}E,\;(K=7.1,\;A_{95}=20.7^{\circ})$ for the reversed direction. Compared with the representative pole positions of the Cretaceous period of the Korean Peninsula, it is concluded that the age of the volcanic rocks in the Hampyeong Basin is of the Late Cretaceous.

  • According to the records of historical and instrumental earthquakes, the southeastern part of the Korean Peninsula is considered the highest seismic activity area. Owing to recent reports of numerous Quaternary faults along the Yangsan and Ulsan fault zones, paleoseismological studies are being actively conducted in these areas. The study area is located in the central part of the Ulsan fault zone, where the largest number of active faults have been reported. Based on lineament and geomorphic analysis using LiDAR images and aerial photographs, fault-related landforms showing topographic relief were observed and a trench survey was conducted. The trench length 20 m, width 5 m, depth 5 m is located approximately 300 m away to the northeast from the previously reported Malbang fault. From the trench section, we interpreted the geometric and kinematic characteristics of the fault based on the deformed features of the Quaternary sedimentary layers. The attitude of the reverse fault, N26°W/33°NE, is similar to those of the reported faults distributed along the Ulsan fault zone. Although a single apparent displacement of approximately 40 cm has been observed, the true displacement could not be calculated due to the absence of the slickenline on the fault plane. Based on the geochronological results of the cryogenic structure proposed in a previous study, the most recent faulting event has been estimated as being earlier than the late Wurm glaciation. We interpreted the thrust fault system of the study area as an imbrication structure based on the previous studies and the fault geometry obtained in this additional trench. Although several previous investigations including many trench surveys have been conducted, they found limited success in obtaining the information on fault parameters, which could be due to complex characteristics of the reverse fault system. Additional paleoseismic studies will contribute to solving the mentioned problems and the comprehensive fault evolution.

  • The electromagnectic modal analysis method for the multiscreen structure with periodic slot array with including conductor thickness effect is presented. The multiscreen structure is seen to be exactly equivalent to a microwave guide closed by phase-shift walls. From this viewpoint, the entire generalized scattering matrix of the multiscreen structure is calculated by the cascade connection of the scattering matrices obtained by the modal analysis at guide junctions and the transmission matrices of guide region. The present method is verified in comparison with the results calculated by the previous method of moment for single screen structure. As an application example of the present method, the spatial filter having multiscreen structure is designed and the interesting characteristics such as transmission and reflection coefficient versus frequency & angle are investigated.

  • In the Obongri-Goseong area of Gangwondo, South Korea, there are six densely distributed volcanic edifices i.e., Duibaejae, Oeumsan, Galmibong, 249 m height, 166 m height, and 102 m height, and two other volcanic edifices including Goseongsan and Unbongsan volcanic edifice that are separately located from a distance. A previously undiscovered 249m volcanic edifice in Obongri was found in this investigation, and the six volcanic edifices distributed in Obongri will be referred to as the Obongri volcanic edifice group. Volcanic edifices in this area were interpreted by other researchers as being volcanic plug, plug dome, and cylindrical volcanic pipe type edifices. The aim of this study is to investigate the aspect of volcanic activity in the Obongri-Goseong area and the formation of volcanic edifices by examining of the shape of volcanic edifices, stratigraphy, and characterization of volcanic products. All the volcanic edifices in the area are composed of basaltic rocks on the Mesozoic granite basement, and the prevalence of the dome shape increased towards the upper part of the mountain. Three volcanic edifices (Duibaejae, 166 m height, 102 m height) include intercalated pyroclastic deposits between the basaltic rocks and the basement. The pyroclastic deposit in the Duibaejae volcanic edifice is composed of quartz, feldspar, granite fragments originated from the basement, and scoria fragments originated from the volcanic eruption. In addition to angular olivine, plagioclase, and pyroxene xenocrysts, all the basaltic rocks contained mantle xenolith, gabbroic xenolith originated from the lower crust, and granitic xenolith originated from the basement. This fact indicates that magma rapidly rose to the surface and that the volcanic activity was explosive. It is also interpreted that, as the basaltic magma became highly viscous due to the large amount of xenocrysts, the erupted magma formed a dome structure on the surface. The original dome structure was then severely eroded out leaving a plug dome formation on the basement.

  • The Main results of this paper about the river channel of Shincheon(river) are as follows: First, the argument that Shincheon had a different river channel from existing one before 1778 would be wrong. Second, the origin of the place name, Shincheon has been traced up to the year of 1778 also would be wrong. Third, Daegucheon(river) regarded as a distributary of Shincheon would be the different stream originated from Samjeong valley and near by hills. Forth, Daegucheon had mostly dried up and disappeared during the Japanese colonial times while part of Daegucheon had changed its channel into Icheoncheon(river). Fifth, the river channel of Shincheon since the historic age has been unchanged.

  • This study aims to identify the value of Incheon Freedom Park as a 'historic urban park' through the historical transition process of the park and surrounding areas. To this end, this study uses a time series analysis, as research method, based on old maps and aerial photographs to investigate the changes in the park over time and to interpret them based on the historical and cultural changes in modern and contemporary history. As a result of the study, the park not only has (1) evidence of major events in modern and contemporary history, but also (2) historical value as an urban park based on the first urban plan in Korea, and (3) very important heritage value that shows the rapidly changing civic life in modern and contemporary times. However, despite the identification of heritage values in this study, further research is needed to explore and excavate in-depth data on the park in order to more clearly identify, restore, and utilize the heritage values of the park.

  • Equivalent circuits for the waveguide probe with H-shaped small aperture, as a key ingredient of near field microwave microscope, is described along with a working principle of the probe. Small rectangular or circular aperture in comparison with the wavelength behaves like the inductive element. So adding the ridged structure (corresponding to capacitive component) to the small aperture allows the transmission resonance to occur. For verification, we represents the equivalent circuit descriptions for the two types, ridged aperture and cavity types. The values of obtained by use of the equivalent circuit approaches are compared with those obtained by use of the available numerical software. The results are also experimentally verified.

  • Jeongeuihyanggyo(旌義鄕校) is a kind of traditional, Confucian cultural landscapes that is located in Jeju special self-governing province. Its historical background illustrates that the first erection was started at Goseong-li of Seongsan-eup(城山邑 古城里) at Taejong(太宗) of 16 years(1417) and it moved to the west gate of Hyunseong(縣城) at Heojong(憲宗) of 15 years,(1849) Joseon. The aim at this study is to reveal characters of these Confucian Spatial Composition and Order, which are valuable resources that can be created into the cultural contents. The results demonstrate the characters of the Confucian cultural landscape as followings; the changing process of new building and its relocation, the utilization of antique maps in location interpretation of Jeongeuihyanggyo, Confucian symbolic elements of it, the spatial compositions and layouts of its buildings, physical structures, main buildings and their characters, locational points of topographic profile, changes of axial line at Daeseongjeon(大成殿), the D/H ratio of its courts. This study can show that Jeongeuihyanggyo is a case for realizing the Confucian reformation to enhance Seongeup Hyun's education standard considering the locality of the site which is an isolated island like Jejudo(濟州島). The author can see that the example of Confucian space is applied to various layout techniques, both horizontally and vertically, in a limited space condition of being in the castle. Therefore, it is necessary to revive this point so that it can utilize unique Confucian cultural landscape possessed only by Jeongeuihyanggyo.

  • The study reviewed the content and the meaning of the present Yeoju Palkyung(eight scenery) through analyzing and interpreting the Palkyung poems, old maps and paintings, and classic materials transmitted in Yeoju area, and investigated the landscape structure of the area around the Cheongshimru(淸心樓: pavilion). On the other hand, many Palkyung poems and Noojeongjeyong(樓亭) poems illustrating the Cheongshimru as the view point or the objective have clarified the scenic excellence when the Cheongshimru is the view point. The Yeoju Palkyung viewed from the Cheongshimru was described as constructing all around allocation structure, and six scenes are categorized as a distant view of the visual influence while the 7th scene Ireungdogyeon and the 8th scene Pasagwau are a psychologically influencing landscapes. The panoramic composition of the Yeoju Palkyung at the Cheongshimru is interpreted as the Seunggyeong distribution considering Palchaejigyeongsaek(八采之景色), where main viewpoint is the Cheongshimru and the distant landscape is Paldaejangrim. The reputation of the Cheongshimru, the central place of the Yeoju Palkyung, is confirmed by the technique of scene processing describing a various way of illustrating landscapes such as near view, distant view, pulling view and collecting view. The restoration of Cheongshimru and Paldaesup(八大藪) currently undertaken is the essential business for the full recovery of the Yeoju Palkyung, which will be not only for physical restoration but also for the shortcut to revitalize the history and the spirit of Yeoju. Furthermore, the business direction should be reconsidered to truly understand the meaning, the value, and the structure of the Yeoju Palkyung to ensure the pursuit of the sustainability aiming at the project "Local attractions", one of the Namhangnag Four rivers project of the ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs.
