  • Rheological characterization was examined for two different types of magenetic particle (rod-like $\gamma$-$Fe_{2}O_{3}$, $CrO_2$ )suspension in this study. The measured suspension viscosity (viscosity vs. concentration or shear rate) is used to obtain the dependence of viscous energy dissipation on the microstructural states of magnetic particle dispersions as well as the microstructural shape effects which are related to magnetic particle orientation. The empirical formulas from mean field theory and the Mooney equation are used to relate suspension viscosity to particle concentration. Intrinsic viscosities of these two different types of rod-like magnetic particle suspensions are found to exceed the prediction of hydrodynamic theory for dilute suspensions and support the existence of flocs containing significant amounts of immobilized suspending medium due to native attraction forces among particles in the microstructures.

  • To investigate the properties of PET films, PET films were extruded at various temperature above $T_m$ and quenched at $18^{\circ}C$ for amorphous sheet, and stretched along a direction defined as the machine direction (MD) with a transverse direction (TD) above $T_g$ at various stretching ratios and then annealed at various temperatures produced by SKC PET line. Thermal shrinkage of MD and TD increased with decreasing annealing temperature and extruding temperature, and increasing stretching ratio. The degree of crystallinity, density, heat of fusion (${\Delta}H$) and pre-melting point ($T_m'$) increased with increasing annealing temperature and extruding temperature. Number average molecular weight ($M_n$) and intrinsic viscosity decreased with increasing extruding temperature. Tensile strength and modulus increased with increasing stretching ratio, however decreased with increasing annealing temperature. Reflective index of both stretching and thickness direction increased with increasing stretching ratio and annealing temperature.

  • This study aims at investigating of the behavioral characteristics of foundation ground subjected to a strip load in anisotropy. Using marine clays sampled at Shihwa area, a series of laboratory tests including triaxial compressive test, plane strain compressive and expansion tests that allows horizontal deformation only and zero strain (${\varepsilon}_2$) in the direction of intermediate stress (${\sigma}_2$) are conducted. In addition, a numerical analysis using parameters obtained from the tests is carried out. In the numerical analysis, Cam-clay model that simulates the behavior of natural deposited clay properly is adopted. The analysis results show that the vertical displacements of the plane strain compressive tests are relatively larger than those of triaxial compressive tests by 18-25%. Likewise, the horizontal displacements is 13-19% larger.

  • A study was conducted to investigate the flexural behavior of reinforced high-strength concrete beams using Belite cement. In this study, fourteen reinforced Belite and control beams were tested. The major experimental variables are compressive strength(350kgf/$cm^2$ and 600kgf/$cm^2$)of concrete and reinforcement ratios(0.0086~0.0345). They were tested by three point loading method. Comparing with flexural behavior of normal reinforced concrete beams, the investigation were to : (1) determine experimentally the load-displacement relationships and the strain distribution on the section of test beams : (2) determine experimentally the moment-curvature and the load-neutral axis relationship of Belite ; (3) investigate the flexural ductility of Belite ; (4) estimate the ratio of the capacities of nominal moment strength as a function of ACI to as a experiment. From the test results, the flexural behavior of reinforced high-strength concrete beams using Belite cement are similar to flexural behavior of normal reinforced concrete beams.

  • To establish a floating offshore wind turbine simulation model, a tension leg platform is added to an onshore wind turbine. The wind load is calculated by using meteorological administration data and a power law that defines the wind velocity according to the height from the sea surface. The wind load is applied to the blade and wind tower at a regular distance. The relative Morison equation is employed to generate the wave load. The rated rotor speed (18 rpm) is applied to the hub as a motion. The dynamic behavior of a 2-MW floating offshore wind turbine subjected to the wave excitation and wind load is analyzed. The flexible effects of the wind tower and the blade are analyzed. The flexible model of the wind tower and blade is established to examine the natural frequency of the TLP-type offshore wind turbine. To study the effect of the flexible tower and blade on the floating offshore wind turbine, we modeled the flexible tower model and flexible tower-blade model and compared it with a rigid model.

  • This paper presents a method for analysis of the mechanical behavior of a crankshaft in a four-cylinder internal combustion engine. The purpose of the analysis was to study the characteristics of the shaft in which the pin and arm parts were assumed to have a uniform section in order to simplify the modal analysis. The results of natural frequency transfer function and mode shape were compared with those obtained by experimental work. The results obtained from the comparison showed a good agreement with each other and consequently verified the analysis model. Furthermore, a prediction of crankshaft characteristics under the firing condition, by using the model, was performed. This study describes a new method for analyzing the dynamic behavior of crankshaft vibrations in the frequency domain based on the initial firing stages. The new method used RMS values to calculate the energy at each bearing journal and counter weight shape modification under the operating conditions.

  • Polyurethanes containing mesogen unit (MPU-6) were prepared from 4,4'-diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI) and 4,4'-bis(6-hydroxy hexoxy)biphenyl (BP-6) having flexible chain composed of 6 carbons. Intrinsic viscosities of MPU-6s were in the range of $0.23{\sim}0.56 dL/g$. The mesomorphic behaviors of MPU-6 were observed in X-ray and polarizing microscopy analysis. However, MPU-6s demonstrated a 'virtual liquid crystal' behavior, which did not exhibit mesophase on slow heating and slow cooling. MPU-6 having lower molecular weight exhibited higher crystallization rate and melting crystallization temperature due to increased mobility of polymer chains. The increased mobility of polymer chains facilitate the orientation of mesogen units that may act as a nucleating agent.

  • This paper presents an experimental study on the potential durability enhancement of infrastructures repaired by a sprayed high ductile fiber-reinforced cementitious composite (ECC). For this study, a PVA-ECC which exhibits sprayable properties in the fresh state and tensile strain-hardening behavior in hardened state was sprayed and tested. The experimental results show that the sprayed ECC exhibits mechanical properties with strain capacity comparable to the cast ECC with the same mix design. During loading, the crack widths of ECC are tightly controlled with an average of 30${\mu}m$. It is also revealed that when sprayed ECC is used as a repair material, ductility represented by deformation capacity at peak load of repaired beams in flexure are obviously increased in comparison to those of commercial prepackaged mortar (PM) repaired beams. In addition to high delamination resistance, the significant enhancement of energy absorption capacity and crack width control in ECC repair system suggest that sprayed ECC can be effective in extending the service life of rehabilitated infrastructures.

  • In this study, characteristics of seismic behaviors of offshore wind turbine systems using concrete-suction-type supporting structures are investigated. Applying hydrodynamic pressure from the surrounding sea water and interaction forces from the underlying soil to the structural system which is composed of RNA, the tower, and the supporting structure, a governing equation of the system is derived and its earthquake responses are obtained. It can be observed from the analysis results that the responses are significantly influenced by soil-structure interaction because dynamic responses for higher natural vibration modes are increased due to the flexibility of soil. Therefore, the soil-structure interaction must be taken into consideration for accurate assessment of dynamic behaviors of offshore wind turbine systems using concrete-suction-type supporting structures.

  • Transition tracks are an alternative for enhancing the long-term serviceability and durability of concrete track components in railway bridges. The goal of this paper is to investigate the structural behavior for transition track systems of railway bridge deck ends. In this study, the structural behavior of transition tracks such as the variations in static, dynamic, and fatigue behaviors and dynamic properties (natural frequency and damping ratio) are assessed and compared through performing loading tests and finite element analyses using actual vehicle impact loadings. As a result, it is found that the structural behavior of the transition track system is expected to satisfy the actual vehicle impact loading, and the variation in the neutral axis and dynamic characteristics are not affected by the fatigue loading. Therefore, it is inferred that the structural capacity and long-term durability of the transition track system is proven.
