  • Mutli-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were surface-modified by a hydrofluoric acid solution to remove impurities and improve interfacial bonding and dispersion of nanotubes in an epoxy matrix. The crystallinity on the surface of treated MWCNTs was investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy. The mechanical properties were characterized by tensile test, and the enhancement of mechanical properties of the modified MWCNTs/epoxy composites was indicated by a 33% increase in tensile strength. The electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness (EMI-SE) of modified MWCNTs/epoxy composites was improved with an increase in concentration of hydrofluoric solution, and EMI-SE showed the maximum increase with 25% HF. However, mechanical and EMI-SE properties didn't show further increase with over 50% HF concentration because the properties of MWCNTs were influenced by degradation of crystallinity and intrinsic properties of MWCNTs. The mechanical and electrical property enhancements of the polymer composites are attributed to the modification of MWCNTs which improve crystallinity of MWCNTs and dispersion in the epoxy resin.

  • Growing environmental concerns regarding pollution caused by conventional plastics have increased interest in biodegradable polymers as alternative materials. The purpose of this study is to develop a 100% biodegradable nanocomposite material by introducing organic nucleating agents into the biodegradable and thermoplastic resin, poly(lactic acid), to improve its properties. Accordingly, cellulose nanofibers, an eco-friendly material, were adopted as a substitute for inorganic nucleating agents. To achieve a uniform dispersion of cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) within PLA, the aqueous solution of nanofibers was lyophilized to maintain their fibrous shape. Then, they were subjected to primary mixing using a twin-screw extruder. Test specimens with double mixing were then produced by injection molding. Differential scanning calorimetry was employed to confirm the reinforced physical properties, and it was found that the addition of 1 wt% CNFs acted as a reinforcing material and nucleating agent, reducing the cold crystallization temperature by approximately 14℃ and increasing the degree of crystallization. This study provides an environmentally friendly alternative for developing plastic materials with enhanced properties, which can contribute to a sustainable future without consuming inorganic nucleating agents. It serves as a basis for developing 100% biodegradable green nanocomposites.

  • Nanocomposite blade for dicing semiconductor wafer is investigated for micro/nano-device and micro/nano-fabrication. While metal blade has been used for dicing of silicon wafer, polymer composite blades are used for machining of quartz wafer in semiconductor and cellular phone industry in these days. Organic-inorganic material selection is important to provide the blade with machinability, electrical conductivity, strength, ductility and wear resistance. Maintaining constant thickness with micro-dimension during shaping is one of the important technologies fer machining micro/nano fabrication. In this study the fabrication of blade by wet processing of mixing conducting nano ceramic powder, abrasive powder phenol resin and polyimide has been investigated using an experimental approach in which the thickness differential as the primary design criterion. The effect of drying conduction and post pressure are investigated. As a result wet processing techniques reveal that reliable results are achievable with improved dimension tolerance.

  • In order to maximize the performance of polymer nano-composites, it is essential to understand an effect of a dispersion state on material properties as well as to achieve highly dispersed composites. In this work, a simple quantitative approach to evaluate the degree of dispersion was suggested for carbon nanotube (CNT) embedded polymer nano-composites. Through UV-visible spectroscopy analysis, the transmittance of nano-composites was measured at various dispersion states and it was found that the transmittance reduced as the dispersion state of CNT improved. Based on the results, an effective concentration factor for quantitative evaluation of dispersion state was introduced into the Beer-Lambert transmittance law. The proposed method and parameter to evaluate the degree of dispersion were verified by analyzing the transmittances at different dispersion states of CNT, concentrations of CNT and sample thicknesses.

  • This review attempted to overview characteristics of nanocellulose from various sources, its isolation methods, and properties of nanocellulose-based nanocomposites. Currently, nanocelluloses could be obtained from a variety of cellulose sources, including wood pulp, tunicate, bacterial cellulose etc., and are isolated by various ways such as chemical, physical, or biological methods. The length and width of nanocellulose is in the range of 100~300 nm long and 5~50 nm wide although characteristics of nanocellulose shows a wide variability, depending on sources and isolation method. Nanocellulose is also being used as a reinforcement in the nanocomposites via various methods. Many water soluble polymers were reinforced by the incorporation of nanocellulose, which significantly improves tensile and storage moduli of the nanocomposites. In order to be used for hydrophobic polymers, the surface of nanocellulose was modified. Even though there is a significant progress in the utilization of nanocellulose as a reinforcement of polymers, further research is required to find a niche market of nanocellulose-reinforced nanocomposites. In addition, isolation methods of producing the nanocellulose in a large quantity for commercial applications should be developed to extend the application of nanocellulose-based bio-nanocomposites in future.

  • The Rapid Prototyping (RP) technology has advanced in many application areas. In this research, implantable Drug Delivery System (DDS) was fabricated by an RP system, Nano Composite Deposition System (NCDS). The DDS composite consists of 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), as drug particles, and PLGA85/15 as biodegradable polymer matrix. To have larger surface area, the DDS was fabricated in a scaffold shape, and its degradation was tested in vitro environment. Biocompatible Hydroxyapatite (HA) powders were added to the drug-polymer composite in order to control drug release. Test results showed a possibility of controlled release of scaffold DDS over 50 days.

  • Polypropylene films reinforced with multi-walled carbon nanotubes and exfoliated graphite nanoplatelets were fabricated by extrusion, and the effects of filler type and take-up speed on the mechanical properties and microstructure of composite films were investigated. Differential scanning calorimetry revealed that the addition of carbon nanomaterials resulted in increased degree of crystallinity. However, increasing the take-up speed reduced the degree of crystallinity, which indicates that tension-induced orientations of polymer chains and carbon nanomaterials and the loss of degree of crystallinity due to rapid cooling at high take-up speeds act as competing mechanisms. These observations were in good agreement with tensile properties, which are governed by the degree of crystallinity, where the C-grade exfoliated graphite nanoplatelet with a surface area of $750m^2/g$ showed the greatest reinforcing effect among all types of carbon nanomaterials used. Scanning electron microscopy was employed to observe the carbon nanomaterial dispersion and orientation, respectively.

  • Because polymer-based composites are lightweight and have excellent properties, their demand is growing rapidly as a way to fulfill properties that are difficult to achieve with a single material. As a result, there has been a lot of research on polymer nanocomposites, which are made by dispersing particles with a size of 1-100 nm in a polymer matrix. In addition, many nanocomposites using thermoplastic resins as matrix materials are being studied. In this study, poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET)-based nanocomposites containing organic nanoclays modified with cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) as interlayer materials were prepared. Among various nanoclays, vermiculite (VMT) has been studied to increase the mechanical and thermal properties of polymeric materials due to its low cost, abundant reserves and unique properties. However, the strong interlayer bonding of VMT has limited its utilization due to its poor exfoliation and dispersion performance within polymer matrices. In this study, the mechanical properties of the VMT content were confirmed by tensile tests, the dispersion of VMT particles in the PET matrix was evaluated by TEM cross-sectional images, and the nitrogen gas barrier properties were evaluated.
