고분자전해질형 연료전지의 가습 저감방안 연구 (Humidification Reduction Study in Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell)

  • 고분자 전해질형 연료전지에서는 수소이온의 이온전도성 저하를 방지하기 위하여 외부에서 가습하여 주는 방식이 일반적이지만, 가습에 소요되는 부품을 일부라도 제거할 경우 연료전지의 효율은 높이고 제작단가도 경감할 수 있다. 이를 위하여 저가습 및 무가습 실험을 수행하였으며, 정확한 data의 수집과 시험장비의 자동제어를 위하여 National Instrument사의 compact field point (cFP)를 사용하였다. 무가습 실험 중 stack의 안정성 측면을 고려하기 위하여 수소연료가 부족하거나 갑작스런 voltage drop이 발생할 경우 LabVIEW logic에 의한 stack 보호용 자동차단 시스템을 구현하였다. Humidifier와 heater의 온도를 조절하여 공급유체의 상대습도 및 온도를 각각 조절하였으며, 이에 필요한 이론적 온도는 Antoine equation을 사용하여 산정하였다. Anode와 cathode 양측 $100\%$ 가습 경우를 기준으로 가습량을 조절하면서 실험을 수행하였으며 성능 차이를 그래프로 도시하여 양측의 변화에 대한 영향을 볼 수 있도록 하였다. Stack의 온도가 $70^{\circ}C$이고 양측 무가습일 경우에 성능 측정이 불가능하여 stack의 온도를 저온에서부터 변화시키면서 무가습 성능을 실시간으로 측정하여 보았다 일반적으로 hydronium ion은 anode측에서 cathode측으로 계속 이동하여야 전기를 생성할 수 있으므로 cathode측 무가습이 anode측 무가습보다 성능이 더 잘 나오는 것으로 예측하였으나 이와 반대되는 경향의 실험 결과를 얻었다. Anode측 무가습과 cathode측 무가습의 standard deviation은 anode 무가습일 경우가 크게 발생하였고 양측 무가습일 경우는 stack의 온도가 높을수록 크게 관찰되었다. 이와 같은 현상은 공기중의 상대습도와 back diffusion등에 영향을 받을 수 있으므로 각종 변수들의 영향을 분리하여 관찰할 수 있는 실험을 수행중에 있다.

  • This study presents the integrated modeling approach to simulate the proton exchange membrane [PEM] fuel cell system for vehicle application. The fuel cell system consisting of stack and balance of plant (BOP) was simulated with MATLAB/Simulink environment to estimate the maximum system power and investigate the effect of BOP component sizing on system performance and efficiency. The PEM fuel cell stack model was established by using a semi-empirical modeling. To maximize the net efficiency of fuel cell system, multi-variable optimization code was adopted. Using this method, the optimized operating values were obtained according to various system net power levels. The fuel cell model established was co-linked to AVL CRUISE, a vehicle simulation package. Through the vehicle simulation software, the fuel economy of fuel cell powered electric vehicle for two types of driving cycles was presented and compared. It is expected that this study can be effectively employed in the basic BOP component sizing and in establishing system operation map with respect to net power level of fuel cell system.

무인항공기용 고분자전해질형 연료전지 시스템의 열교환기 성능 특성 연구 (Experimental Study on the Characteristics of Heat Exchanger of 1 kW PEMFC System for UAV)

  • The proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) is regarded as the most promising alternative power sources for unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) due to its high energy density and silent operation. Since there are many load changes during UAV flight, thermal management is one of the important factor for the performance of PEMFC. In order to reduce the UAV weight for the stable operation of UAV, thermal management system (TMS) studied in this work does not use the fan but use the air flowing into UAV by UAV flight. In order to develop the passive type heat exchanger (HEX) for 1kW PEMFC, four types of HEXs are fabricated and their cooling performances are compared. The parametric study on the cooling performance of HEXs has performed with the variation of operating parameters such as mass flow rates and inlet temperature of air and coolant. Type 4 has the best performance in every case. This study can be helpful to achieve the optimal design of HEX for PEMFC powered UAV.

고분자전해질형 연료전지의 단순 채널 리브 형상에서의 물방울 가시화 연구 (Visualization of Water Droplets in the Simple Flow Channel and Rib Geometry for Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cells (PEMFCs))

  • The effective water management in a polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) is one of the key strategies for improving cell performance and durability. In this work, an ex situ measurement was carried out to understand the water droplet behavior on the surface of gas diffusion layer (GDL) as a fundamental study for establishing novel water management. For that purpose, simplified cell including one rib and two flow channels was designed and fabricated. Using this ex situ device, the water droplet emergence through the GDL of the PEMFC was emulated to understand liquid water transport through the porous diffusion medium. Through the visualization experiment, the emergence and growth of water droplets at the channel/GDL interface are mainly observed with the surface characteristics of GDL (SGL 10BA, 24BA) and rib when the liquid water passes through the GDL and is expelled to the flow channel. It is expected that the results obtained from this study can contribute to the better understanding on the water droplet behavior (emergence and removal) in the flow channels of PEMFC.

중공사막 가습에 따른 PEMFC의 성능 평가 (Performance Test of PEMFC with Hollow Fiber Membrane)

  • Polymer membrane needs to maintain appropriate moisture. Insufficient moisture causes low conduction of hydrogen ion because of increased contact resistance between electrode and membrane by shrinking membrane, and abundant moisture decreases fuel cell performance as difficulty of diffusion reacting gas. Therefore, water controlling system is very consequential for the polymer membrane fuel cell. If hollow fiber membrane humidification is used between fuel and air lines, it is possible to supply heat to fuel and air by using thermal exchanger. It can supply appropriate humidity depending on operating temperature, and can recover heat from exhaust gas which contains water vapor and air. Because of simple structure of humidification system, this system can be easily applied in the PEMFC and cut down cost.

고온형 고분자전해질형 연료전지에서의 사형 유로와 평행 유로 성능비교에 대한 수치해석적 연구 (Numerical Study on Comparison of Serpentine and Parallel Flow Channel in High-temperature Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells)

  • General polymer electrolyte fuel cell (PEMFC) operates at less than $80^{\circ}C$. Therefore liquid phase water resulting from electrochemical reaction accumulates and floods the cell which in turn increases the mass transfer loss. To prevent the flooding, it is common to employ serpentine flow channel, which can efficiently export liquid phase water to the outlet. The major drawback of utilizing serpentine flow channel is the large pressure drop that happens between the inlet and outlet. On the other hand, in the high temperature polymer electrolyte fuel cell (HT-PEMFC), since the operating temperature is 130 to $180^{\circ}C$, the generated water is in the state of gas, so the flooding phenomenon is not taken into consideration. In HT-PEMFCs parallel flow channel with lower pressure drop between the inlet and outlet is employed therefore, in order to circulate hydrogen and air in the cell less pumping power is required. In this study we analyzed HT-PEMFC's different flow channels by parallel computation using previously developed 3-D isothermal model. All the flow channels had an active area of $25cm^2$. Also, we numerically compared the performance of HT-PEMFC parallel flow channel with different manifold area and Rib interval against the original serpentine flow channel. Results of the analysis are shown in the form of three-dimensional contour polarization curves, flow characteristics in the channel, current density distribution in the Membrane, overpotential distribution in the catalyst layer, and hydrogen and oxygen concentration distribution. As a result, the performance of a real area fuel cell was predicted.

탄소 담지체의 결정성에 따른 고분자전해질형 연료전지의 내구성 평가 연구 (Effect of Graphitized Carbon Supports on Electrochemical Carbon Corrosion in Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cells)

  • 탄소 담지체의 결정도와 형태가 전기화학적 부식특성과 입자뭉침 현상에 미치는 영향을 평가하기 위해서on-line mass spectrometry와 cyclic voltammogram(CV)법을 사용하였다. 부식실험은 단위 전지형태에서1.4 V의 정전압 조건으로 30분간 시행되었으며 이 때 발생한 $CO_2$ 의 양을 on-line mass spectrometry로 측정하였다. 실험 결과 결정성이 높은 carbon nanofiber (CNF)를 사용한 Pt/CNF 촉매가 결정도가 낮은 담지체를 사용한 상용 Pt/C 촉매보다 $CO_2$ 발생량이 적어 전기화학적 부식에 대한 저항성이 큰 것으로 나타났다. 부식실험 전후의 임피던스와 CV측정에서도 탄소 부식의 영향이 적은 Pt/CNF에서 그 변화가 크지 않은 것으로 관찰되었다. 이러한 결과는 탄소 부식이 고분자 전해질형 연료전지(PEMFC)의 내구성을 결정하는 중요한 요소임을 보여준다. 하지만 탄소 부식이 영향을 미치지 않는 조건에서 실시한 반복 CV 실험 결과 촉매 입자 이동에 의한 뭉침현상은 Pt/CNF에서 더 큰 것으로 나타났다.
