  • The purpose of this study is to analyze high school students' understanding and use of the recommended books lists. The survey distributed to high school students in seven high schools located in Seoul, and 311 students responded. Using SPSS 24, the data was analyzed by frequency, binary logistic model, and one-way ANOVA. Results show the followings. First, the meaningful factors affecting students' use of recommended books lists are gender, grade levels, and the degree to which students think recommended books lists include the books that are suitable and interesting. Particularly, the degree to which students think recommended books lists include the suitable books for them is the strong factor affecting students' use of the recommended books lists. Second, male students are less likely to use recommended books lists than female students. Male students consistently are less likely to use the recommended books lists made by school librarians, subject teachers, and reading experts and/or organizations. Third, teacher-librarians believed that the recommended books lists would help students who do not enjoy reading and have difficulties in reading. However, the study finds that students who enjoy reading and read well are more willing to use the recommended books lists made by school librarians, subjects teachers, and reading experts and/or organizations than those who do not. Fourth, students are most willing to use the recommended books lists for college preparation. The findings suggest the further research topics in designing the recommended books lists suitable for high school students and in scaffolding the high school students' use of book information reflected in recommended books lists.

  • Nowadays the researches on the reading materials about Mathematics are emphasized and quitely active. But most researches have just proposed the lists of books or materials of the reading activities in Mathematics. Therefore we choose the subject for this study as the analysis of the characteristic attitudes about Mathematics for 3-leveled (high, middle, low) high-school students who have studied Mathematics using the reading activities. After the applications of reading activities for leveled students, we have the following results. For the low-leveled students, the high-leveled(=difficult to understand) reading materials may loose the confidence and interest about Mathematics. The appropriate reading materials for leveled students will increase the interest and change the attitude about Mathematics. We expect that the reading activities in Mathematics extend the logical and rational thinking power that our society has required.

  • The purpose of this study is to identify the effects of school library personnel on students' reading behaviors and to identify differences between schools on it. For this purpose, this study surveyed 5,349 elementary, middle and high school students from 154 schools across Korea, and conducted a survey on reading environment, school library, and DLS. The results of the analysis showed that the students at the school where teacher librarians works are more likely to read books, participate in various reading programs, receive more help from teacher librarians in selecting books to read, lending more books, have more experience with DLS and satisfaction with it. The differences between the schools were in the order of 'classes which school library personnel took part in,' 'number of borrowed books,' 'help in selecting books,' 'average reading time per day,' 'number of home books,' 'reading in school library.' Therefore, it is necessary to expand the placement of school library personnel and develop their professionalism in order to prevent inequality in the educational environment between schools.

  • The purpose of this study is to confirm the effect of digital co-teaching between teachers online on improving students' reading literacy. In order to achieve the purpose of the study, a pre-test was conducted on first-year high school students, and a post-test was conducted after conducting the co-teaching over two sessions. For statistical analysis, the data of 101 students with no missing values in pre- and post-tests were used. Through the OECD's PISA reading literacy evaluation framework and factor analysis, a reading literacy test tool consisting of expression, comprehension, and information literacy was developed and the degree of change in reading literacy was measured through a self-report with the tool. As a result of the analysis, it was confirmed that the digital co-teaching had a statistically significant positive effect on the expression, comprehension and information literacy of high school students. This study is meaningful in that it shows that digital co-teaching can be applied as a way to improve reading literacy in PISA organized by the OECD.

  • The purpose of this study is to understand student's reading motivation by laying out self-selected reading program and running it at school libraries. The self-selected reading program based on self-determination theory ensures the autonomy of book selection. The self-selected reading program in this study provided a number of scope and recommended book lists in order to ensure the autonomy of book selection and developed integrated reading and writing. After finishing this program, the author measured 6 domains of reading motivation with participated students who completed this course. As a result, it turned out that autonomous motive domains excessively surpassed heteronomous motive domains. Such autonomy of book selection, one of the key features from self-selected reading programs, is expected to help making the best use of school library collections by recommended book lists and stimulating stable and sustainable reading habits driven by self-motivation.

  • The purpose of this study is to present the development direction of future reading education by examining the characteristics of reading materials within the high school textbook developed as the 2015 revised curriculum. For this purpose, reading materials of high school textbooks were analyzed in Korean language, mathematics, English, integrated science, and integrated social studies. The analysis criteria of reading materials were subject type, purpose, and student activities. As a result of the study, reading materials on various themes such as humanity, liberty, culture, environment, and district were presented in the integrated society and integrated science textbook of the 2015 revised curriculum. In particular, the Korean language curriculum was composed of a unit called "reading one book in one semester". However, most reading materials have no guidance on reading effective or reading direction, and lack of reading materials and information for extended reading. The reader's reading of the textbook was found to be simply supplementing the learning content of each unit or presenting fragmentary cues for conceptual purposes. This suggests that there is a lack of awareness of students' interest in reading, internalization of reading, and extension of reading. In this paper, we suggest supplementary materials of reading materials for expanding the high school textbooks, and explore the developmental relationship between textbooks and reading education through suggestions on aspects of textbook composition and teaching methods.
