  • In this study, the characteristics of chemical grouting, such as solidification, penetrability, were analyzed experimentally by grain size of grout materials and permeability, relative density of the ground. For evaluating applicability of grout material, solidification tests and permeability tests were peformed. From the results of the tests, effective solidification ratio and penetrability ratio of Micro Cement were 75% and 86% respectively when ground permeability was in the range of 10$^{-4}$ to 10$^{-2}$cm/sec. On the other hand, effective solidification ratio and penetrability ratio of Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) were both lower than 50%. When penetrability of grout material is needed for improvement of dam foundation and soft ground, application of Micro Cement is much superior to that of the other materials. The results of the grouting tests in the hydrodynamic ground show that the solidification effect of long gel-time grout material is excellent as injection pressure increases when groundwater velocity is relatively low. But when groundwater velocity is relatively high, the solidifcation effect of long gel-time grout material is very poor because most grout materials are outflowed.

  • A number of highway projects are in progress in Korea to accommodate increasing transportation demands. As the highway route becomes more complex, some projects include tunneling through unconsolidated sedimentary rock. Since an unconsolidated sedimentary rock mainly consists of rock and ground mass, the behavior and characteristics in unconsolidated sedimentary rock tunnel are quite different from typical rock tunnel. However, construction case histories and rock classifications method on unconsolidated sedimentary rock tunnel had not been developed or studied domestically. Consequently the case studies and rock classification system for unconsolidated sedimentary rock are required to better understand its behavior for tunneling. In this study, rock mass classification method is proposed to identify unconsolidated sedimentary rock based on point load and slake durability tests. Based on this, the proposed method of unconsolidated sedimentary rock can be applied well through comparisons with the results of convergence measurement.

  • About 3% of Casein is included in milk and it accounts for 80% of milk's protein. It has an adhesive property when mixed with calcium hydroxide and sodium hydroxide solutions. It has been usually used to bond woods under dry condition but becomes weak when exposed to moisture. Such weakness is very critical when casein is applied for soil cementation under groundwater condition. Therefore, this study was aimed to protect such weakness by changing or adding certain ingredients of casein adhesive. Two types of cemented specimens were prepared with Nakdong river sand and tested for unconfined compressive strength and durability. Each specimen was mixed with casein or cement. Ingredients of casein binder suggested by the University of Wisconsin, which is called a standard casein recipe, was also prepared. This study tried 6 different types of casein binder recipe. Among them, one with 30% hydroxide calcium increase and 50% hydroxide sodium decrease compared with the standard casein was most effective. Based on the most effective casein recipe, cemented sand with 1-4% of casein ratio was prepared and tested. The unconfined compressive strength and durability index were 6,253kPa and 92% for the specimen with 4% of casein ratio and 1,500kPa and 62% for the one with 8% of cement ratio. Therefore, casein cemented sand showed better performance. In addition, over 3% of casein cemented sand had over 80% durability index.

  • Triaxial tests at isotropic confining pressure of 200 kPa were carried out to show the undrained shear behavior of artificially cemented sands, which were cemented by gypsum, and the influences of relative density and DOC (degree of cementation) were investigated from the results. The yield strength, the elastic secant modulus at yield point and the peak frictional angle of cemented sands increased abruptly compared to uncemented sands, and it was checked that cementation exerts more influence on the behavior of sand than the relative density. But after breakage of the cementation bonds, the relative density was more important factor on the behavior of sand than the cementation. Because the compressibility md the excess pore pressure of cemented sands were reduced due to the cementation bonds, the effective stress path of cemented sands was going toward to the total stress path of uncemented sands. The cementation of sand restricted the dialtion of sand at the pre-yield condition, but induced more dilation in the post-yield condition.

  • In this study, it is performed that mix design of grouting materials which high strength, durability and environmentally safe materials for 2 types of suspension, solution grouting. The laboratory model tests such as permeation, solidification tests are performed to find injection effects by the injection pressure, soil condition. And environmental effects of the grouting materials is analyzed through the heavy-metal leaching tests. From the results, micro cement of suspension grouting superior permeation, solidification injection to Portland cement, and phosphoric acid and sodium hydrogen carbonate in solution grouting were similar to micro cement of suspension grouting. When compare to strength of grouted soils, micro cement of suspension grouting showed high compression strength to Portland cement. While, solution grouting showed very low compression strength comparing suspension grouting. Also, in the heavy-metal leaching tests results were satisfied with the environmental regulation standard for raw grouting materials and grouted soil by 7, 14, 28days curing.

  • Cemented soils have been used for subbase or base materials of roads, backfill materials of retaining walls and cofferdam. Such cemented soils can be degraded due to repeated wetting and drying or various weathering actions. Unlike rocks, a standard method was not defined for evaluating the durability of cemented soils. In this study, a slaking durability test and an ultrasound cleaner were used for developing a new durability test method for cemented soils. For durability tests, cemented sands with different cement ratios (4, 6, 8, and 12%) with cylindrical specimens were prepared and then air cured or under-water cured for three days. Three-day-cured specimens were dried for one day and then submerged for one day before testing. The weight loss after the slake durability test or ultrasonic cleaner operation for 10 or 20 min was measured and used for assessing durability. When a cement ratio was 4%, the weight loss from ultrasonic cleaner test was 7-25% but that from slake durability test was as much as 30-60%. For specimens with cement ratio of more than 8%, the weight loss was less than 10% from both tests. A durability index increased with increasing a cement ratio. The durability index of under-water cured specimen was higher than that of air cured specimen. The ultrasonic cleaner test was found to be an effective tool for durability assessment of cemented sands rather than the slake durability test.

  • In this study, a blast furnace slag with the alkaliphilic microorganism (Bacillus halodurans) alkaline activator was used to cement natural soils in the field. A low-cost and massive microbial solution for cementation of field soils was produced and compared with existing microbial culture in terms of efficiency. A field soil was prepared for three different cementation areas: a cemented ground with microbial alkaline activator (Microbially-treated soil), a cemented ground with ordinary Portland cement (Cement-treated soil), and untreated ground (Non-treated soil). The testing ground was prepared at a size of 2.6 m in width, 4 m in length, and 0.2 m in depth. After 28 days, a series of unconfined compression tests on the cement-treated and microbially-treated soils were carried out. On the other hand, a torvane test was carried out for non-treated soil. The strength of field soils treated with microorganism was 1/5 times lower than those of cement-treated soil but is 6 times higher than non-treated soil. The pH measured from microbially-treated soil was about 10, which is lower than that of cement-treated soil (pH = 11). Therefore, it is more eco-friendly than Portland cemented soils. The C-S-H hydrates were found in both cement- and microbially-treated soils through SEM-EDS analyses and cement hydrates were also found around soil particles through SEM analysis.

  • There are some kinds of microorganisms within soils which can precipitate some minerals such as calcite under suitable conditions. Such precipitated calcites within pores of soil may reduce permeability and also cement soil particles. In this study, whether such microorganisms can fill pores within soil and increase the strength is investigated. Basillus pasteurii was repeatedly injected into weakly cemented sand with 3% cement ratio up to 10 times for 20 days. Then, cemented sand injected with microorganisms was tested for an unconfined compressive strength and evaluated for filling voids between soil particles. The unconfined compressive strength of one time injected specimen showed a 5% increase compared to untreated specimen. However, for more than two times the strength of injected specimens gradually decreased up to 50% of the untreated specimen by microorganisms. As the number of microorganism injection increased, the amount of calcite precipitation slightly increased within voids. However, over-precipitated calcites may result in strength decrease of slightly cemented soils.

  • Burger's model was used to analyze creep characteristics of unconsolidated rock. Burger's model should determine four physical parameters from two pairs of data. In this study, physical parameters of Burger's model were determined by applying mathematical concept solution. Creep was accelerated for three years using the determined physical parameters of the Burger's model for unconsolidated rocks. As a result, the creep behavior showed a continuous deformation behavior without convergence. Therefore, in this mine, it is analyzed that the application of U-Beam is more appropriate than roofbolt in terms of stability.
