  • The optimal design of water distribution system have started with the least cost design of single objective function using fixed hydraulic variables, eg. fixed water demand and pipe roughness. However, more adequate design is accomplished with considering uncertainties laid on water distribution system such as uncertain future water demands, resulting in successful estimation of real network's behaviors. So, many researchers have suggested a variety of approaches to consider uncertainties in water distribution system using uncertainties quantification methods and the optimal design of multi-objective function is also studied. This paper suggests the new approach of a multi-objective optimization seeking the minimum cost and maximum robustness of the network based on two uncertain variables, nodal demands and pipe roughness uncertainties. Total design procedure consists of two folds: least cost design and final optimal design under uncertainties. The uncertainties of demands and roughness are considered with Latin Hypercube sampling technique with beta probability density functions and multi-objective genetic algorithms (MOGA) is used for the optimization process. The suggested approach is tested in a case study of real network named the New York Tunnels and the applicability of new approach is checked. As the computation time passes, we can check that initial populations, one solution of solutions of multi-objective genetic algorithm, spread to lower right section on the solution space and yield Pareto Optimum solutions building Pareto Front.

  • These days, Uncooled IR Systems are more popular in the area of defense and aerospace than before. Uncooled IR Systems are widely used as core technology for making unmanned systems and detecting enemy objects during the day and night in the distance. Recently, researches on TEC-less IRFPA have been increased to minimize the power consumption and to make a smaller system than before. For this, it needs to find adequate NUC(Non-Uniformity Correction) coefficients as FPA(Focal Plane Array) temperature changes. In this paper, we propose a new NUC coefficient estimating technique, DCCE-LI(Dynamic Calibration Coefficients Estimation with Linear Interpolation), for TEC-less IRFPA. It is based on a linear interpolation method and it can estimate NUC coefficients in real-time. So, by testing and evaluating it with some IR images, we conclude that the quality of IR images using proposed method is better than applying static coefficients.

  • In this study, we estimate parameters of a distributed hydrologic model, GRM (grid based rainfall-runoff model), using a model-independent parameter estimation tool, PEST. We implement auto calibration of model parameters such as initial soil moisture, multipliers of overland roughness and soil hydraulic conductivity in the Geumho River Catchment and the Gamcheon Catchment using radar rainfall estimates and ground-observed rainfall represented by Thiessen interpolation. Automatic calibration is performed by GRM-MP (multiple projects), a modified version of GRM without GUI (graphic user interface) implementation, and "Parallel PEST" to improve estimation efficiency. Although ground rainfall shows similar or higher cumulative amount compared to radar rainfall in the areal average, high spatial variation is found only in radar rainfall. In terms of accuracy of hydrologic simulations, radar rainfall is equivalent or superior to ground rainfall. In the case of radar rainfall, the estimated multiplier of soil hydraulic conductivity is lower than 1, which may be affected by high rainfall intensity of radar rainfall. Other parameters such as initial soil moisture and the multiplier of overland roughness do not show consistent trends in the calibration results. Overall, calibrated parameters show different patterns in radar and ground rainfall, which should be carefully considered in the rainfall-runoff modelling applications using radar rainfall.

  • Calibration of load-resistance factors for the limit state design of front covered caisson breakwaters were presented. Reliability analysis of the breakwaters which are constructed in Korean coast was conducted. Then, partial safety factors and load-resistance factors were sequentially calculated according to target reliability index. Load resistance factors were optimized to give one set of factor for limit state design of breakwater. The breakwaters were redesigned by using the optimal load resistance factor and verified whether reliability indices larger than the target value. Finally, load-resistance factors were compared with foreign country's code for verification.

  • In this paper, the spatial randomness and probability characteristics of material properties are inversely estimated by using a set of the stochastic fields for the material properties of geotechnical structures. By using the probability distribution and probability characteristics of these estimated material properties, topology optimization is performed on structure shape, and the results are compared with the existing deterministic topology optimization results. A set of stochastic fields for material properties is generated, and the spatial randomness of material properties in each field is simulated. The probability distribution and probability characteristics of actual material properties are estimated using the partial values of material properties in each stochastic field. The probability characteristics of the estimated actual material properties are compared with those of the stochastic field set. Also, response variability of the ground structure having a modulus of elasticity with randomness is compared with response variability of the ground structure having a modulus of elasticity without randomness. Therefore, the quantified stochastic topology optimization result can be obtained with considering the spatial randomness of actual material properties.

  • Recently, in proportion to increased demand on environmentally-friendly heat source, efficient management of district heating(DH) system becomes one of important issue. The objectives of this paper are to systematize data processing of transition temperature, investigate the effect of temperature variations on thermal fatigue and find out a way to improve design fractures of Korean DH pipes. For this purpose, reliable fatigue lift evaluation procedures are examined and applied to quantify thermal fatigue lives. Also, as a prototypal optimization analysis results, mean value of original cross sectional area of selected pipes was reduced 18.6% sustaining their sufficient margins against fatigue failure. So, it is anticipated that the output of this research can be used as useful information of optimal design and operation in the future.

  • In order to provide food factors necessary for safety assessment and standard setting of hazardous substances in foods, per capita consumption of food items by Korean population was optimized for the periods of 1970's and 1980's from nutritional survey and food supply data. Average daily intake of total foods per person was 1,104 g in 1970's and 1,240 g in 1980's. Much variation was observed between the two decades by food commodities.

  • When wavelength division optical coupler is fabricated with the polished single mode optical fiber, coupling coeffiecient differ from wavelength and distance to two cores. Wavelength division is function of the differential coupling coefficient to distance of two cores. This paper suggests the condition of the minimum spacing of the wavelength division with the function of the distance of two cores.

  • Load resistance factors for the limit state design of vertical caisson breakwaters are presented. Reliability analysis of 16 breakwaters in nationwide ports was conducted to calculate the partial safety factors and they were converted into load and resistance factors. The final load resistance factor was calibrated by applying the optimization technique to the individually calculated load resistance factors. Finally, the breakwater was redesigned using the optimal load resistance factor and verified whether the target level was met. The load resistance factor according to the change of the target reliability level is presented to facilitate the limit state design of breakwater.
