  • In general, wavelet coefficients are composed of a few large coefficients and a lot of small coefficients. In this paper, we propose image denoising algorithm using Bernoulli-Gaussian mixture model based on sparse characteristic of wavelet coefficient. The Bernoulli-Gaussian mixture is composed of the multiplication of Bernoulli random variable and Gaussian mixture random variable. The image denoising is performed by using Bayesian estimation. We present an effective denoising method through simplified parameter estimation for Bernoulli random variable using local expected squared error. Simulation results show our method outperforms the states-of-art denoising methods when using orthogonal wavelets.

  • The oceanic tides have an effect on groundwater levels in coastal fractured rock aquifers. The observed groundwater table fluctuations caused by the effective stress through an aquifer are shown as sine curves similar with tidal fluctuation. To estimate a hydrogeologic parameter, tidal method is utilized with groundwater level fluctuations of two monitoring wells. Cross correlation function is used to calculate time lags between observed groundwater levels and tide, and the deeper well shows longer time lag. The storage coefficients calculated by using tidal efficiency and time lag show large differences. The storage coefficients obtained by using time lags are close to the result of slug test, and that of the deeper well shows closer value by slug test. The tidal efficiency is unsatisfied to apply in the tidal method because of an effect of phreatic aquifer and the vertical flow of groundwater through fractured confining bed. This tidal method can be an economical and effective way to define the parameter by considering the location of observation well and hydrogeologic characteristics of a coastal aquifer.

  • Generally, the total ventilation resistance coefficient in a tunnel consists of inlet/outlet loss coefficient, wall friction coefficient, and other loss coefficient caused by sudden expansion and contraction of cross-section, etc. For the tunnel before opening, when the running ventilation fan is stopped, the wind speed in the tunnel is reduced by the total ventilation resistance drag. The velocity decay method is comparatively stable and easy to estimate the wall friction coefficient in the pre-opening tunnel. However, the existing study reported that when the converging wind speed is a negative value after the ventilation fan stops, it is difficult to estimate the wall friction coefficient according to the velocity decay method. On the other hand, for the operating tunnel in which the piston effect acts, a more complex process is performed; however, a reasonable wall friction coefficient can be estimated. This paper aims at suggesting a method to minimize the measurement variables of the piston effect and reviewing a method that can be applied to the operating tunnel. Also, in this study, a new method has been developed, which enables to calculate an variation of the piston effect if the piston effect is constant with a sudden change of external natural wind occurring while the wind speed in the tunnel decreases after the ventilation fan stops, and a programming logic has been also developed, which enables dynamic simulation analysis in order to estimate the wall friction coefficient in a tunnel.

  • The rebound test using Schmidt hammer is most popular method to estimate strength of concrete. However, this method is inappropriate for Seoul Metro underground structures due to unsuitable aging effects. Consequently, the strength presumption equation of underground structures is proposed according to the correlation of uniaxial compressive strength, rebound test results and age of concrete. To achieve this, the results of in-depth inspection of Seoul Metro underground structures performed annually for last 8 years was anlayed.

  • In this study, a procedure was introduced to estimate strength and deformation modulus of the 3-D discrete fracture network(DFN) systems using the distinct element method(DEM). Fracture entities were treated as non-persistent square planes in the DFN systems. Systematically generated fictitious fractures having similar mechanical characteristics of intact rock were combined with non-persistent real fractures to create polyhedral blocks in the analysis domain. Strength and deformation modulus for 10 m cube domain of various deterministic and stochastic 3-D DFN systems were estimated using the DEM to explore the applicability of suggested method and to examine the effect of fracture geometry on strength and deformability of DFN systems. The suggested procedures were found to effective in estimating anisotropic strength and deformability of the 3-D DFN systems.

  • The loss reserve is defined as a provision for an insurer's liability for claims or an insurer's estimate of the amount an individual claim will ultimately cost. For the estimation of the loss reserve, the data which make up the claims in general is represented as run-off triangle. The chain ladder method has known as the most representative one in the estimation of loss reserves based on such run-off triangular data. However, this fails to capture change point in trend. In order to test of structural changes of development factors, we will present the test statistics and procedures. A real data analysis will also be provided.

  • Various blast pressure calculation methods have been developed for predicting the explosion pressure of vapor cloud explosions. Empirical methods include the TNT equivalent method, and multi-energy method. The multi-energy method uses a charge strength that considers environmental factors. Although the Kinsella guideline was provided to determine the charge strength, there are limitations such as guidelines related to ignition sources. In this study, we proposed an improved charge strength guideline, by subdividing the ignition source intensity and expanding the type classification through literature analysis. To verify the improved charge strength guideline, and to compare it with the result obtained using the Kinsella guideline, four vapor cloud explosion cases which could be used to estimate the actual blast pressure were investigated. As a result, it was confirmed that the Kinsella guidelines showed an inaccurate, that is, wider pressure than the actual estimated blast pressure. However, the improved charge strength guideline enabled the selection of the intensity of the ignition source, and more subdivided types through the expansion of classification, hence it was possible to calculate the blast pressure relatively close to that of the actual case.

  • In this paper, we studied to improve Inoue's[1] and Kijima's[2] model used to predict ship's manoeuvrability at initial design state. To perform this work, we carried out PMM(Planar motion Mechanism) test and rudder open water test for 12 models of low-speed blunt-ship which have horn type rudders and bulbs in afterbody. As we adopted MMG(Mathematical Modelling Group) model, we could analyze hydrodynamic and MMG experimental coefficients. The regression analyses by principle parameters were carried out for hydrodynamic and MMG experimental coefficients. The regression analyses by principle parameters were carried out for hydrodynamic and MMG experimental coefficients and the equations by regression analysis wee used to search sensitivities and to estimate ship's manoeuvrability. We had simulated ship's manoeuvrability to check revised MMG.
