  • Hydrogen is attracting much attention as a renewable energy source with high energy density and environmental friendliness. Among various hydrogen production methods, water electrolysis stands out as a clean hydrogen production technique that could lead the future of hydrogen production, as it does not emit carbon, and many studies are currently underway to realize this technology. However, the high overpotential, which increases the cost of hydrogen production, acts as a stumbling block, making the development of electrocatalysts extremely important. This paper aims to summarize and introduce recent research trends in the development of electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction and oxygen evolution reaction through interfacial engineering, and to deeply discuss the challenges in implementing next-generation water electrolysis devices.

  • In composite materials, the adhesion and interfacial properties were the most important factors to obtain high performance of mechanical properties. This review paper had been focused on the micromechanical evaluation methods for the interfacial property historically. The interfacial property of fiber-reinforced composites (FRC) could be evaluated using only a single fiber and matrix via various micromechanical testing methods. Self-sensing due to the fracture behavior of FRC could be determined and discussed more critically and clearly using electro-micromechanical evaluation. In this paper, the research trends for micro-mechanical evaluation of composites was summarized, and their practical applications would be suggested in the future.

  • For the enhanced oil recovery, one of the most important factors is to determine the surfactant formulation in chemical flood. The objective of this study is to analyze the microemulsion formed between the alkali-surfactant (AS) solution and A crude oil for screening surfactants. The alkali-surfactant solution was manufactured by using the surfactant purchased from AK ChemTech. $C_{16}-PO_7-SO_4$ and sodium carbonate solution were used as surfactant and alkaline, respectively. Both TEGBE and IBA were used as a co-solvent. The AS solution and A crude oil can form a Type III middle phase microemulsion at the salinity from 0.0 wt%~3.6 wt%. Increasing the salinity causes the phase transition of microemulsion from the lower (Type I) to middle (Type III) to upper (Type II) phase. Interfacial tension (IFT) values calculated by Huh's equation were in good agreement with ultralow IFT. According to this characteristic, the surfactant purchased from a domestic company can be applied to the enhanced oil recovery.

  • In making emulsion-type pressure sensitive adhesive (PSA), environmentally friendly sorbitan nonionic surfactants having various chemical structures were prepared and used to find out the possibility of substituting the traditional nonyl-phenyl nonionic surfactant (NPE40) by comparing their adhesive properties. Results exhibited that the PSA used NSR10-series and Tween 60 showed better adhesive properties in initial ball tack, peel strength and holding power than those of NPE40. The reason for this is their particular chemical structure and the proper ratio of hydrophobic groups to the ethylene oxide groups.
