  • In this study, mechanical tensile properties of carbon fiber reinforced polymeric (CFRP) composite cycled with thermo-mechanical loading under cryogenic temperature (CT) were measured using cryogenic environmental chamber. Thermo-mechanical tensile cyclic loading (up to 10 times) was applied to graphite/epoxy unidirectional laminate composites far room temperature (RT) to $-50^{\circ}C$, RT to $-100^{\circ}C$ and RT to $-150^{\circ}C$. Results showed that tensile stiffness obviously increased as temperature decreased while the thermo-mechanical cycling has little influence on it. Tensile strength, however, decreased as temperature down to CT while the reduction of strength showed little after CT-cycling. For the analysis of the test results, coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of laminate composite specimen at both RT and CT were measured and the interface between fiber and matrix was observed using SEM images.

  • In this work, epoxy/carboxyl-terminated butadiene acrylonitirile (EP/CTBN) composites were prepared by employing a reinforcing filler, silica treated with silane coupling agent in different ratio by dry and wet method. Their curing characteristics, surface free energy, interface morphologies and mechanical properties such as tensile strength and impact resistance were carefully investigated. Differential scanning calorimetry(DSC) results showed that curing temperature was lowered with the increase of silane coupling agent because of the increase of relative curing agent cotent by filling the pores of silica. Wet method was proved to be more effective for lowering curing temperature of EP/CTBN composite. In general, surface free energy and impact resistance were increased with the increase of silane coupling agent in this work. Tensile strength, however, was observed to be decreased at 4 wt% of silane coupling agent. It was found that the dry method was proved to be preferable for pretreatment of silica with coupling agent.

  • In order to investigate the effect of the chemical treatment of bamboo fiber on physical properties of polypropylene (PP)/bamboo fiber (BF) composites, silane coupling agents such as ${\gamma}$-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APS), ${\gamma}$-glycidoxypropyl-trimethoxysilane (GPS) and ${\gamma}$-mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane (MRPS) were applied to BF and alkaline treated BF. Morphological properties of the chemically treated BF were confirmed by optical microscope and SEM measurements, and chemical structure changes were confirmed by FT-IR and EDS. TGA results showed that the thermal stability of silane treated BF increased. Based on the analysis of a universal testing machine and an Izod impact test, the flexural and impact properties of PP/silane treated BF composites showed higher values than those of PP/BF composites. The enhancement of interfacial adhesion properties of the PP/BF composite was checked from SEM images of the fracture of specimens after the tensile test.

  • In this work, the effect of chemical surface treatments on morphology of carbon blacks was investigated in terms of cure behavior and tearing energy ($G_T$) of carbon blacks/rubber composites. As experimental results, the polar or nonpolar chemical treatment led to a significant physical change of carbon black morphology. The cure activation energies (Ea) and frequency factor (A) obtained from Kissinger equation decreased with improving the dispersion of carbon flacks, resulting in high reactivity. However, a significant advantage of carbon black/rubber composites is gained by carbon blacks treated in basic (BCB) or nonpolar (NCB) chemical solution, resulting in increasing the tearing energy. These results could be explained by changes of dispersion, agglomerate, surface functional group, void volume, and cross-linking density of carbon black/rubber composites.

  • The representative eco-friendly materials, or bio-composites, were made by incorporating biodegradable polymer of polybutylene succinate (PBS) as the matrix and bamboo flour (BF) as the natural filler. In present study, the effects of content and particle size of natural filler on the bio-composites were carried out around their mechanical, visco-elastic, and thermal properties. By the incorporation of BF, the tensile properties decreased but the viscoelastic and thermal properties revealed positive effect through interaction between the polymer and natural filler. Also, the vulnerability of interfacial adhesion between hydrophobic PBS and hydrophilic BF appeared to adversely affect the properties of bio-composites.

  • In this study, the blends of acrylic quaternary polymer (PEBEV) which was co- polymerized from 2-ethylhexyl acrylate (2-EHA), n-butyl acrylate (BA) and ethyl acrylate (EA), vinyl acetate (VAc), and poly(vinyl chloride-co-vinyl propionate) (PVCVP) were prepared by solution blending. Pressure sensitive adhesive (PSA) properties of PEBEV/PVCVP blends were compared with those of PEBEV/poly(vinyl chloride-co-vinyl acetate) (PVCVAc) blends. Compatibility of PEBEV/PVCVP was better than that of PEBEV/PVCVAc. Tackiness of both blend systems were similar, but holding power began to decrease at 15wt% or higher PVCVAc contents in PEBEV/PVCVAc blends. On the other hands, holding power of PEBEV/PVCVP increased as the contents of PVCVP increased. Failure modes of the blends were adhesive failure except 5wt% of PVCVP was blended.

  • The physical properties of functionalized graphene sheet (FGS)/poly(ethylene-co-vinyl acetate) (EVA) was examined with various kinds of EVA, having vinyl acetate (VA) contents in the range of 0 to 40 wt%. The compatibility between FGS and EVA was enhanced as the polar VA content of EVA increased. Thus, the dispersion of FGS in EVA became finer, and the decrease of surface resistivity and the increase of tensile modulus by the added FGS became more effective when the VA content of EVA was high. When the VA content was low, the elongation at break was reduced drastically by added FGS due to the poor adhesion of FGS/EVA interface. The crystallization of EVA was generally retarded by the interaction with dispersed FGS. However, when both the VA content of EVA and the added amount of FGS were low, the crystallization of EVA was enhanced, probably due to the predominant nucleating effect by FGS.

  • Recent studies regarding the properties of carbon nanotubes (CNT) have made remarkable progress in CNT fibers research. However no CNT fibers showed the properties of CNTs because CNTs in fibers have weak interfacial bonding with low shear modulus in the pristine form. Thus, it is upmost interest to develop and employ post-production treatments to the CNT fibers that would potentially improve their properties. In this study, post-treatments resulted in improvement of strength of CNT fibers up to 40%.

  • Asymmetric poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) membranes were prepared by varying the precipitation conditions of the phase inversion technique, and the influences of precipitation conditions on the water uptake of the membrane were investigate. The degree of water uptake of the membrane increased and reached a certain maximum value, as the precipitation time increased. However, it decreded after that. As the precipition temperauure became lower, the degree of water uptake increased more or less. The addition of a nonionic surfactant to the precipitaon solution was effective reducing the precipitation time by lowering the surface tension of the precipitation solution, but ig didn't change the maximum value of its own degree of water uptake. In addition, the relationship between the degree of water uptake and the separation characteristics and mechanical properies of the membrane were investigated. The selectivity factor of the membrane for pervaperation separation decreased, but the permeate flux increased, respectively, with increasing the degree of water uptake. The tensile strength and elongation of the membrane, respectively, increased to a maximum value with increasing the degree of water uptake, and then decreased abtuptly.

  • In this work, the effect of oxygen plasma treatment of nano-scaled silica on the mechanical interfacial properties and thermal stabilities of the silica/rubber composites was investigated. The surface properties of the silica were studied in X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and contact angles. And, their mechanical interfacial properties and thermal stabilities of the composites were characterized by tearing energy ($G_{IIIC}$) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), respectively. As a result, it was found that the introduction rate of oxygen-containing polar functional groups onto the silica surfaces was increased by increasing the plasma treatment time, resulting in improving the tearing energy. Also, the thermal stabilities of the composites were increased by increasing the treatment time. These results could be explained that the polar rubber, such as acrylonitrile butadiene rubber (NBR), showed relatively a high degree of interaction with oxygen-containing functional groups of the silica surfaces in a compounding system.
