Design and Realization of 20 GHz Push-Push FET Dielectric Resonator Oscillator (20 GHz Push-Push FET 유전체 공진기 발진기 설계 및 실현)

  • Electrical characteristics of two types of 20 GHz Push-Push GaAs MESFET dielectric resonator oscillators having Wilkinson and T-junction power combiners for the output stage have been investigated. The Push-Push oscillator for suppressing fundamental frequency 10 GHz and enhancing 20 GHz has been designed and realized in microstrip configuration on 20 mil thick RT-Duroid(${\varepsilon}_r$=2.52) teflon substrate. Two different types of power combiners, T-junction and Wilkinson, have been considered. Whenever one type of the combiners has been adopted for the output circuit, output power, phase noise and fundamental frequency suppression characteristics of the oscillator have been measured. When the Wilkinson power combiner was used, a maximum output power of 5.67 dBm, a phase noise of -105.5 dBc/Hz at an offset frequency of 100 kHz and a fundamental frequency suppression of -29.33 dBc have been measured. When the T-junction power combiner was used, a maximum output power of -1.17 dBm, a phase noise of -102.2 dBc/Hz at an offset frequency of 100 kHz and a fundamental frequency suppression of -17.84 dBc have been measured.

  • We have fabricated and characterized MMI (Multimode Interference) coupled ring resonator with the total internal reflection mirrors and the semiconductor optical amplifier for the integration of the WDM (Wavelength Division Multiplexing) system. The TIR (Total Internal Reflection) mirrors were fabricated by self-aligned process and had losses of about 0.71 dB per mirror. Coupling in and out of a resonator was achieved using the extremely small MMI couplers. The MMI length and width used in the experiment were $119{\mu}m$ and $9{\mu}m$, respectively. The resulting FSR (Free Spectral Range) and on-off ratio were approximately 1.333 nm (162 GHz) and 13 dB, respectively.

  • In this paper, we have investigated a fiber type active coupler which utilizes the mode coupling between the side polished single mode optical fiber and the active multimode planar waveguide. The proposed device can be used for not only tunable wavelength filter or optical intensity modulator but also a tool for measuring optical properties of guiding material such as refractive index, birefringence, electro-optic coefficient, and thermo-optic coefficient. We gave designed and optimized a coupler structure using the BPM and fabricated the device using thermo-optic polymer as active planar waveguide overlay. The device showed that insertion loss was less then 0.5 dB, extinction ratio was -13 dB at the resonance wavelength, and the wavelength tunablity due to thermo-optic effect was -1.5 nm/$^{\circ}C$. The active coupler using thermo-optic effect can be used as a wavelength tunable filer, an optical intensity modulator and an optical sensor. pulses that are subsequently compressed by a dispersive optical fiber. Experimental results show that $sech^2$ shape pulses with a pulse width of ~14 ps and a time bandwidth product of ~0.34 are successfully generated at 10 GHz repetition rate. In contrast to other methods, such as higher order soliton compression, this approach does not depend on the optical power and thus shows promise for application to low-power lasers.

  • Longitudinal transmission-line modal theory is applied to analyze the guiding mode characteristics along 1D & 2D grating patterns of plasmonic grating-assisted directional couplers (P-GADC) based on silicon waveguide. By defining supermodes amenable to rigorous analytical solutions and interference between even and odd modes, the field distributions of TE modes for each grating patterns are evaluated. The numerical result reveals that the field distribution with maximum coupling efficiency occurs at P-GADC composed by square grating pattern. That is, it reveals at a minium gap condition of grating period $d_{min}=8.8{\mu}m$ different from conventional phase-matching condition of GADC.

  • The calibration of 1 inch standard condenser microphone is done by the reciprocity calibration method. There are two kinds of reciprocity calibration, free-field calibration and pressure calibration. The pressure sensitivities of the three 1 inch condenser microphones are determined by pressure calibration. The accuracy of the pressure sensitivity of the microphone depends on the accuracies of the voltage and dimension measurements as well as the various corrections for the coupler. If the individual accuracies for the measurements and corrections are achieved, it is estimated that the over-all accuracy is approximately 0.05dB at low and middle frequencies decreasing to about 0.ldB over 10kHz.

  • In this paper, a fabrication method of low-loss tapered optical fibers coupler using hydrofluoric acid with surface tension driven is proposed. The proposed fabrication method is very simple compared to flame-based method, and shows low excess insertion losses compared to polishing method. The adiabatic-tapered structure along the coupling region of the coupler shows wavelength independent characteristic over the C-band in optical communication system, and will enable promising applications.

  • Optical fiber coupler is a crucial optical passive component for optical transmission systems. In this paper, we fabricate wavelength insensitive optical coupler(WIC), of two types for which the processing procedures are complicate and difficult. These couplers are fabricated by two optical fibers having either different fiber parameters or different cladding diameters. To clarify the validity, we measure the optical characteritics and compare to the data of theoretical simulation. The experiment results ref#eat that it has uniformity of about 1.0 dB and excess loss of less than 0.1 dB in the range of $1310{\pm}40nm\;and\;1550{\pm}40nm$.

  • A modified broad-band ring hybrid balun with additional two shorted $\lambda$/4 stubs is proposed. The proposed balun is a modified version which has additional two shorted $\lambda$/4 stubs to compensate phase and amplitude imbalances of conventional ring hybrid coupler. To demonstrate the validity of the proposed balun, a balanced Schottky-diode frequency doubler is designed and measured. Measurement data show that the proposed frequency doubler has around 10 dB conversion loss and more than 30 dB fundamental suppression over an input range of $1.6{\sim}2.35\;GHz$.

  • High-senstivity temperature sensor based on the wavelength selectivity of single mode fiber-to-planar waveguide coupler, was demonstrated. The resonant wavelength of the coupler was shifted with large rate of -3.43nm/$^{\circ}C$ owing to good thermo-optic effects of polymer planar waveguide. The device design technique to reduce the polarization dependent properties and increase the temperature sensitivity was presented.

Analysis and Design of Branch Line Coupler using Microstrip Lines with Overlay (덮개층이 있는 마이크로스트립 선로를 이용한 브랜치 선로 결합기 해석 및 설계)

  • A method of miniaturizing branch line coupler is presented. The method utilizes the microstrip line with overlay(or superstrate). The frequency dependent characteristics, dispersion and characteristic impedance, of this line are obtained by Immitance method in spectral domain and Method of Line. The relevant spectral domain Green's function is given and used to obtain numerical results. The branch line couplers with overlays are designed and fabricated at 2 GHz. The experimental results show that the size of coupler with overlay(${epsilon}_r$=10.2) is 31.4 precent smaller than conventional coupler. This minimized coupler is suitable for Butler Matrix as feeder for mobile communication beam forming antenna.
