  • This paper presents a bridge road surface frost prediction and monitoring system. The node sensing hardware comprises microprocessor, temperature sensors, humidity sensors and Zigbee wireless communication. A software interface is implemented the control center to monitor and acquire the temperature and humidity data of bridge road surface. A bridge road surface frost occurs when the bridge deck temperature drops below the dew point and the freezing point. Measurement data was used for prediction of road surface frost occurrences. The actual alert is performed at least 30 minutes in advance the road surface frost. The road surface frost occurrences data are sent to nearby drivers for traffic accidents prevention purposes.

  • The accumulated ice and snow during the operation of aircraft and railway vehicles can degrade aerodynamic performance or damage the major components of vehicles. Therefore, it is crucial to predict the temporal growth of ice for operational safety. Numerical simulation of ice is widely used owing to the fact that it is economically cheaper and free from similarity problems compared to experimental methods. However, numerical simulation of ice generally divides the analysis into multi-step and assumes the quasi-steady assumption that considers every time step as steady state. Although this method enables efficient analysis, it has a disadvantage in that it cannot track continuous ice evolution. The purpose of this study is to construct a surrogate model that can predict the temporal evolution of ice shape using reduced-order modeling. Reduced-order modeling technique was validated for various ice shape generated under 100 different icing conditions, and the effect of the number of training data and the icing conditions on the prediction error of model was analyzed.

  • The frozen road is effected as major cause of car accident in winter. Especially, road surface freezing on the highway can lead to fatal accident. The accident by frozen road can effectively reduced by prevent road surface freezing before it frozen as evaluate road surface condition. Therefore, this study installed thermometer in each depth of concrete pavement for evaluate road surface conditions which freezing chronically. • This study improved the algorithm for the road ice prediction algorithm and analyzed the prediction rate when comparing actual field measurement data and algorithm prediction value. For analysis, road and weather conditions were measured in Geumdong-ri, Sinbuk-myeon, Pocheon-si. First algorithm selected previous research result algorithm. And the 4th algorithm was improved according to the actual freezing conditions and measured values. Finally, five algorithms were developed: freezing by condensation, freezing by precipitation, freezing by snow, continuous freezing, and freezing by wind speed. When forecasting using an algorithm at the Pocheon site, the freezing hit rate was improved to 93.2%. When calculating the combination ratio for the algorithm. the algorithm for freezing due to condensation and the continuation of the frozen state accounted for 95.7%.

  • In the previous studies, the validation of numerical codes has been conducted based on the qualitative comparison of predicted ice shapes with experiments, which poses a significant limit on the systematic analysis of ice shapes due to the variation of meteorological conditions. In response to this, the numerical code has been quantitatively validated against available experiment for the ice accretion on cylinders and airfoils in the present study. Ice shapes accumulated on the bodies are systematically investigated with respect to various icing parameters. To this end, maximum thickness, heading direction and ice thickness are quantified and expressed in the polar coordinate system for the comparison with other numerical results. By applying the quantitative analysis, similar shapes are intuitively distinguished. The developed numerical code underestimates the ice accretion area and the ice thickness of lower surface. In order to improve the accuracy, further accurate aerodynamic solver is required for the water droplet trajectories.

  • This study analyzed the scenario for road freezing section by applying the road freezing evaluation algorithm. To apply road freezing algorithm, the influencing factors on road freezing were reviewed. Observation data from four points, Mokgam IC, Jeongneung tunnel, Seongsan bridge, and Yeomchang bridge were used for analysis. All observatories are installed on the expressway, and they are classified for the analysis of road freezing characteristics. When the difference between the road surface temperature and dew-point temperature of the road freezing evaluation algorithm was 3℃ or less, the section where road freezing occurred was checked. In addition, road freezing evaluation was derived through the change of the road surface condition and water film thickness of the freezing section.

  • This study suggests a method for securing road safety by extracting the expected surface freezing section in planning a route using GIS. When planning a road construction in a mountainous area it is possible to confront surface freezing especially in the wintertime. In addition, it is required assessment data of surface freezing rates in the case of turnkey inspections of newly constructed or expanded roads. Consequently, an analysis method that can quantitatively estimate the surface freezing section and sunshine influence on each section of a road is needed. We can extract the expected surface freezing section which amounted to around 29km of the Donghae highway, with such techniques as three-dimensional modeling, sunshine simulation geographical database construction and spatial analysis using the overlay function of the GIS spatial analysis. This study can be used as a method to assess advance safety which has a direct influence on planning the blueprint that should be approved by a policy maker after efficiently understanding the expected surface freezing section in accordance with hill shade.

  • Ice accretions on the surface around a rotorcraft air intake can deteriorate the safety of rotorcraft due to the engine performance degradation. The computational simulation based on modern CFD methods can be considered extremely valuable in analyzing icing effects before exact but very expensive icing wind tunnel or in-flight tests are conducted. In this study the range and amount of ice on the surface of anti-icing equipment are investigated for heat-on and heat-off modes. It is demonstrated through the computational prediction and the icing wind tunnel test that the maximum mass and height of ice of heat-on mode are reduced about 80% in comparison with those of heat-off mode.
