Multi-focal Microscopic System Using a Fiber Bundle (광섬유 다발을 이용한 다초점 현미경)

  • We have constructed and analyzed the performance of a simple fiber bundle multi-focal microscope. The microscope had a fiber bundle substituted for micro-lens array that is the core part of MMM(multi-focal multi-photon microscope). The MMM is a type of confocal microscope. To analyze the performance and characteristics of the fiber bundle multi-focal microscope, three types of samples were used: a standard grating, USAF 1951(7, 3), and 1951(7, 6). Using two polarizers and a polarizing beam splitter, we eliminated noise and got clear images. We obtained the FWHM of fiber spot images with the standard grating using two different magnifier lenses which were 63X and 20X, and found an image of the sample as a distribution of fiber spot images. For this case we used the low magnification lens, which gives denser distribution, so that we could get clearer images. In order to test the resolution of the fiber bundle multi-focal microscopic system, we used the USAF 1951 sample which has a smaller line interval than that of the standard grating. The FWHM of the line width of the image coincides well with the real line width of the USAF 1951 sample. We confirmed the performance of a fiber bundle multi-focal microscopic system which is relatively simple but has submicron resolution and is able to get 1600 images at the same time.

A Study on Performance Characteristics of Horizontal Axis Tidal Turbine Considering Nose Shape, Angle of Inflow and Tower Structure (수평축 조류발전 터빈의 노즈 형상 및 유입각도, 타워 구조물의 영향을 고려한 터빈 성능특성 분석)

  • In this study, three-dimensional fluid flow analyses have been performed in order to investigate the performance characteristics of a horizontal axis tidal turbine (HATT) by solving three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations utilizing the shear-stress-transport turbulence model. The computational domain for the flow analysis has been composed of hexahedral grids, and the grid dependency test has been carried out so as to determine the optimum grid size. Performance characteristics of the HATT have been investigated in consideration of the effects of hub nose geometry, inflow angle, and the tower. It has been found that the power output can be enhanced along with an increase of the ratio of the length to the diameter of the turbine nose, and the power of HATT has been reduced by approximately 10% when the primary fluid flow had an inflow angle of 15°. The power output of downstream HATT is found to be lower than that of the upstream HATT by about 1%.

Effects of Underexpanded Plume in Transonic Region on Longitudinal Stability (천음속 영역에서 과소 팽창 화염이 종안정성에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구)

  • Exhaust plume effects on longitudinal aerodynamics of missile were investigated by wind tunnel tests using a solid plume simulator and CFD analyses with both the solid plume and air jet plumes. Approximate plume boundary prediction technique was used to produce the outer shape of the solid plumer and chamber conditions and nozzle shapes of the air jet plumes were determined through plume modeling technique to compensate the difference in thermodynamic properties between air and real plume. From comparisons among turbulence models in case of external flow interaction with the air jet plume, Spalart-Allmaras model turned out to give accurate result and to be less grid-dependent. Effects induced by the plume were evaluated through the computations with Spalart-Allmaras turbulence model and the air jet plume to account for various ratios of chamber and ambient pressure and Reynolds number under the flight test condition.

Nondestructive Techniques for Characterization of Microstructural Evolution during Low Cycle Fatigue of Cu and Cu-Zn Alloy (Cu와 Cu-Zn 합금의 저주기피로 동안 발달한 미세조직 평가를 위한 비파괴기술)

  • The object of this study is to evaluate and discriminate nondestructively the dislocation substructures of Cu and Cu-Zn alloy subjected to the low-cycle-fatigue. The ultrasonic wave velocity, electrical resistivity and positron annhilation lifetime(PAL) were measured to the nondestructive testing. Cyclic fatigue test of Cu and Cu-Zn alloy with much different stacking fault energies was conducted and the correlations between dislocation behavior and nondestructive parameters were studied. Dislocation cell substructure was developed in Cu, while planar array of dislocation structure was developed in Cu-35Zn alloy only increasing dislocation density with fatigue cycles. Decrease in ultrasonic wave velocity, increase in electrical resistivity and PAL were shown because of the development of lattice defects, dislocations and vacancies, by cyclic fatigue at room temperature. In contrast to Cu-Zn alloy of the planar-array dislocation substructure showing continuous changes in the nondestructive parameters, it does not make any noticeable changes in the nondestructive parameters after the evolution of dislocation cell substructure in Cu.

Eulerian-based Numerical Modeling for Impingement Prediction of Supercooled Large Droplets (과냉각대형액적 충돌예측을 위한 오일러리안 기반 수치 모델링)

  • Supercooled large droplet issues in aircraft icing have been continually reported due to the important safety considerations. In order to simulate the impingement behavior of large droplets, a two-dimensional and compressible Navier-Stokes code was developed to determine the flow field around the test model. Also, the Eulerian-based droplet impingement model including a semi-empirical approach for the droplet-wall interaction process and droplet break-up was developed. In particular, the droplet-wall interactions were considered as numerical boundary conditions for the droplet impingement simulation in the supercooled large droplet conditions. Finally, the present results were compared with the experimental test data and the LEWICE results. The droplet impingement area and maximum collection efficiency values between present results and wind tunnel data were in good agreements. Otherwise, the inclination of collection efficiency of the present result is over-predicted than the wind tunnel data around a lower surface of the NACA 23012 airfoil.

  • Pressure waves are generated and propagate in tunnel when train enters a tunnel with high speed. Compression wave due to the entry of train head propagates along the tunnel and is reflected at tunnel exit as expansion wave. While expansion wave due to the entry of train tail propagates along the tunnel and is reflected at tunnel exit as compression wave. These pressure waves are repeatedly propagated and reflected at tunnel entrance and exit. Severe pressure change per second causes ear-discomfort for passengers in cabin and micro pressure wave around tunnel exit. It is necessary to analyze the transient pressure phenomena in tunnel qualitatively and quantitatively, because pressure change rate is considered as one of major design parameters for an optimal tunnel cross sectional area and the repeated fatigue force on car body. In this study, we developed the characteristics method analysis based on fixed mesh system and compared with the results of real train test. The results of simulation agreed with that of experiment.

Numerical Simulations of Crack Initiation and Propagation Using Cohesive Zone Elements (응집영역요소를 이용한 균열진전 모사)

  • In this study a cohesive zone model was used to simulate the delamination phenomena which occurs by a successive crack initiation and propagation in composite laminates. The cohesive zone model was incorporated to the classical finite element method via cohesive element formulation and then implemented into the user-subroutine UEL of a commercial finite element program Abaqus. To validate the formulation and implementation of the cohesive element the finite element results were compared with the experimental data of double cantilever beam and end notched flexure tests. The numerical results well agree with the experimental load-displacement curves. Also the effect of the elastic stiffness and the size of the cohesive element on the global load-displacement curves were studied numerically. To minimize the mesh-dependency of the crack propagation path and eliminate the zig-zag patterns in the load-displacement curve, cohesive elements should be refined at the crack-tip.

  • Recently a method for increasing the bearing capacity by laying the reinforcing materials with three or four layers as a method reinforcing the ground was studied recently. The purpose of this study is to examine the method for increasing shear-strength factor of the ground by reinforcing the ground under the foundation. According a method of wrapping ground with bakk-shape or semicircle-shape by geotextile was developed in this study and it looks likes anaspect that spreading footing exits under spread footing. A simulation loading-test using Aluminum sticks was carried out in order to examine the mechanism about bearing capacity of spread footing reinforced by geotextile. Increase of ultimate bearing capacity was verified in this simulation loading-test when charging loads to spread footing, which is propose from this study, reinforced by geotextile. And moving directions of points of the ground were also checked by grid-type indication method, and the areas where plastic failure appeared were checked by B-shutter photographing.

  • 홍수 저감, 생태계 복원, 위락 등 다양한 목적의 충족을 위해 강변에 저류지, 즉 다목적 유수지(detention basin)를 조성하는 사례가 나타나고 있다. 하천에서 홍수의 발생으로 수위가 어떤 기준보다 높아지면, 흐름의 일부를 돌려 저류지로 보냄으로써 본류의 부담을 덜 수 있다. 이때, 흐름의 분기를 위해 설치되는 하천구조물 중 하나가 측면 위어(side weir) 또는 횡월류 위어(side discharge/overflow weir)이다. 하천의 계획과 설계에서 위어가 적용될 때, 위어에 대한 수위-유량 관계, 즉 그 형식과 제원에 적합한 유량계수(discharge coefficient)의 결정이 관건이 된다. 일반적인 위어와 달리 흐름 양상이 복잡한 측면 위어의 경우, 이론과 실제의 괴리가 아직까지 해소되지 않아 실물 또는 3차원 수치 모형을 이용한 시험으로 수위-유량 관계를 수립할 필요가 있다. 이렇게 결정된 수위-유량 관계는 1차원 또는 수심적분 2차원 모형의 내부 또는 외부 경계로 사용되며, 본류의 수위 증감에 따른 측면 위어의 횡월류량을 통해 저류지의 홍수 조절 능력을 평가할 수 있다. 이 연구에서는, 측면 위어의 수위-유량 관계가 알려지지 않더라도, 저류지에 의한 홍수 조절 효과를 평가할 수 있는 2차원 수치모의에 대해 검토하였다. 수치해법으로서 2차원 천수방정식에 대해 유한체적법을 적용하고, 흐름률(flux)의 정확한 계산을 위해 근사 Riemann 해법을 도입하였다. 먼저, 측면 위어가 없는 실험 조건에 대해 수로 내 한 측선에서 측정된 수위와 유량을 모의 결과와 비교하여 모형을 검증하였다. 이때, 경계조건으로 상류 끝에 측정 유량을, 하류 끝에 측정 수위를 부여하였으며, Manning의 조도계수를 0.014로 설정하였다. 또한, 측면 위어가 설치된 수로에 대해 계산 영역을 340개의 삼각형 격자로 분할하고 측면 위어가 없는 경우와 동일한 조건을 두어 모의하였다. 측면 위어의 하류에 위치한 측선에서 측정치에 대한 평균 제곱근(root mean square) 오차가 수위에 대해 1.9 mm, 유량에 대해 $2.2{\ell}/s$로서 그림과 같이 모의 결과는 실험의 그것과 잘 일치하였다. 이로써, 측면 위어에 대한 수위-유량 관계의 수립을 위한 실물 모형 시험 없이 수심적분 2차원 수치모의를 통해 저류지의 홍수 조절 효과를 평가할 수 있음이 확인되었다.

Impact Monitoring of Composite Structures using Fiber Bragg Grating Sensors (광섬유 브래그 격자 센서를 이용한 복합재 구조물의 충격 모니터링 기법 연구)

  • Low-velocity impact can cause various damages which are mostly hidden inside the laminates or occur in the opposite side. Thus, these damages cannot be easily detected by visual inspection or conventional NDT systems. And if they occurred between the scheduled NDT periods, the possibilities of extensive damages or structural failure can be higher. Due to these reasons, the built-in NDT systems such as real-time impact monitoring system are required in the near future. In this paper, we studied the impact monitoring system consist of impact location detection and damage assessment techniques for composite flat and stiffened panel. In order to acquire the impact-induced acoustic signals, four multiplexed FBG sensors and high-speed FBG interrogator were used. And for development of the impact and damage occurrence detections, the neural networks and wavelet transforms were adopted. Finally, these algorithms were embodied using MATLAB and LabVIEW software for the user-friendly interface.
