  • A motion capture system is widely used in movies, computer game, and computer animation industries because it allows for creating realistic human motions efficiently. The inertial motion capture system has several advantages over more popular vision-based systems in terms of the required space and cost. However, it suffers from low accuracy due to the relatively high noise levels of the inertial sensors. In particular, the accelerometer used for measuring gravity direction loses the accuracy when the sensor is moving with non-zero linear acceleration. In this paper, we propose a method to remove the linear acceleration component from the accelerometer data in order to improve the accuracy of measuring gravity direction. In addition, we develop a simple method to calibrate the joint axis of a link to which an inertial sensor belongs as well as the position of a sensor with respect to the link. The calibration enables attaching inertial sensors in an arbitrary position and orientation with respect to a link.

  • This study attempts to explore the educational applicability of webtoons. Webtoons have very useful educational elements in educational environments. First, they are extremely popular among learners of the internet age and not only do webtoon images provide immersiveness and enjoyment to learners in class environments based on text but the narrativity and contextuality of webtoons can also provide abundant material in connection with the subject. Also, the interactivity of the Web 2.0, a space where webtoons are circulated, can also be utilized in educational environments. This study attempts to explore grounds for detailed approaches for the educational applicability of webtoons using theoretical and practical methods. It is hoped that through this study, assessments can be made of positive prospects regarding the educational applicability of webtoons.

  • Motion capture system is widely used nowadays in the entertainment industry like movies, computer games and broadcasting. This system consist of several high resolution and high speed CCD cameras and expensive frame grabbing hardware for image acquisition. KAIST VR laboratory focused on low cost system for a few years and have been developed a LAN based optical motion capture system. But, by using low cost system some problems like occlusion, noise and swapping of markers' trajectory can be occurred. And more labor intensive work is needed for post-processing process. In this thesis, we propose a trajectory rectification algorithm by confidence model of markers attached on actor. Confidence model is based on graph structure and consist of linkage, marker and frame confidence. To reduce the manual work in post-processing, we have to reconstruct the marker graph by maximizing the frame confidence.

  • Historically, internet is the fastest growing media together with the ICT development and the key of the development is contents. Digital contents indicate information which covers voice, DB, game, publications and music etc. and the areas have been creating new technology business opportunities. The value chain of digital contents consists of production, collection, processing, services, connection and navigation and is expected to be reorganized around business players of production and distribution areas. This paper presents on those changes occurring in business environment and examples of business models, and further provides industries and academias with technology commercialization strategies.

  • Rapid technology growth of hardware have brought about development and expansion of various digital motion pictured information including 3-Dimension. 3D digital techniques can be used to be diversity in Animation, Virtual-Reality, Movie, Advertisement, Game and so on. 3D characters in digital motion picture take charge of the core as to communicate emotions and information to users through sounds, facial expression and characteristic motions. Concerns about 3D motion and facial expression is getting higher with extension of frequency in use and range about 3D character design. In this study, the facial expression can be used as a effective method about implicit emotions will be studied and research 3D character's facial expressions and muscles movement which are based on human anatomy and then try to find effective method of facial expression. Finally, also, study the difference and distinguishing between 2D and 3D character through the preceding study what I have researched before.

  • As the importance of Culture Technology (music, publication, mobile, film, video, cartoon, animation, character, game, broadcasting etc) is increased, the field of character industry recently has been recognized as an independent brand value beyond the existing view point of simple designing; it also has been given much attention as a main axis leading the cultural industry of the 21 st century. The character of a local government plays roles such as a symbolic part of a region, parts of tourism and public relations, and a profit-making function, which results into generation of regional image and activation of regional economy. However, the present application strategy of the character is only limited to an early stage of regional advertisements. In this context, this study is aimed to investigate and analyze the character development of local governments, especially 31 cities and goons of Gyeonggi Province, comparing with those of local governments of Japan. In the long run, this will provide some suggestions for strategy of character applications. Then, this research is expected to be used as basic reference materials for character development of other local governments and government agencies.

  • Due to spread of movies or online games which are applied with computer animation techniques, we can easily see scenes where numerous characters appear. In the case of large-scale crowd animation, if one were to increase reality of the scene, features of system would be lowered, and if one were to increase functioning of system, reality of the scene would be lowered. In realizing large-scale crowd animation with seafloor environment as background, the paper analyzed and applied elements that affect behavioral types of fishes; and by using concept of crowd, the paper enabled each group or object to control their behavioral type; by comparing and contrasting real-time calculation method as calculation method for animation and hybrid calculation method which is mixed calculation method, the paper seeks to find a method that increases functioning of the system while also expresses natural scenes.

  • This paper introduces the HD 3DTV camera and 3DTV receiver that are compatible with the ATSC HDTV broadcasting system. The developed 3DTV camera is based on stereoscopic techniques, and it has control function to control both left and right zoom lens simultaneously and to control the vergence. Moreover, in order to control the vergence manually and to eliminate the synchronization problem of the both images, the 3DTV camera has the 3DTV video multiplexing function to combine the left and right images into the single image. The developed 3DTV signal, and it has the various analog/digital interfaces. The performance of the developed system is confirmed by shooting the selected soccer game in 2002 FIFA KOREA/JAPANTM World Cup and by broadcasting the match. The HD 3DTV camera and receiver will be applied to the 3DTV industries such as 3D movie, 3D game, 3D image processing, 3DTV broadcasting system, and so on.

  • The production of hyper-realistic digital rendering images has been available due to radical improvements of recent digital rendering and CGI (Computer-Generated Imagery) software technologies. The photorealism of digital architectural rendering images requires further studies and discussions in that architectural visualization becomes a foundation of other fields using digital rendering technology, such as movies, games, and VR industry. The principles for achieving photorealism on digital architectural rendering images were re-defined and detailed elements were analyzed through theoretical analysis of the former studies. Four principles were drawn from the architectural rendering images produced by newly-developed technologies: physically-accurate lighting calculations, accurate object geometry representation, realistic material and texture, and characteristics of photography. The sub-elements of those four principles are categorized into either essential or selective for photorealistic imagery and the randomness of the selective elements could explain the variety of photorealistic architectural rendering styles.

  • Cultural contents refers to cultural and artistic contents that are saved, sold, and enjoyed in various digital media. In responding to rising content contents, OSMU has been utilized to make one content into various types of products. Recently, transmedia contents are replacing the role of OSMU. Transmedia contents builds up the united content with blending of various contents through plural media and they have emerged in the part of creating digital contents under the convergence paradigm. Transmedia contents becomes invasive and permeates fully the audience's lifestyle by developing content available across multiple forms of media. This study discusses the differences between OSMU and transmedia contents. It attempts to clearly define transmedia contents and to conceptualize the components of transmedia contents. In doing so, this study seeks a new method of storytelling utilizing transmedia contents. The discussions in this study should be useful for transmedia content developers to improve their work. Implications and directions for future study are discussed.
