  • Air hockey robots are machine vision systems that allow users to play hockey balls through the camera. The position detection of the hockey ball is realized by using the color information of the ball using OpenCV library. It senses the position of the hockey ball, predicts its trajectory, and sends the result to the ARM Cortex-M board. The ARM Cortex-M board controls a 2- Axis Cartesian Coordinate Robot to run an air hockey game. Depending on the strategy of the air hockey robot, it can operate in defensive, offensive, defensive and offensive mode. In this paper, we describe a vision system development and trajectory prediction system and propose a new method to control a biaxial orthogonal robot in an air hockey game.

  • As many changes in the future society represented by the age of artificial intelligence(AI) are expected to come, efforts are being made to draw the shape of the future education and various research methods are being employed to support the attempts. While many research studies use methods for deriving generalized results such as expert survey and trend analysis in along with a review of literature, there are attempts to apply the scenario methodology to explore ideas and information needed within a changing context. A scenario method, one of the experiential learning strategies, aims to seek various and alternative approaches by establishing a plan from the present conditions considering future changes. In this study, in-service teachers' perceptions and expectations of the interactivity between human and AI teachers were visualized by applying the role-play presentation technique that grafted the concept of role-play game to the scenario method. In addition, the mandal-art method was introduced to support in conducting productive discussion during the teachers' collaboration. This method appeared to help to depict teachers' perceptions of AI teachers in the detailed and concrete form, which may flow in the abstract otherwise. Through analyses of the teachers' role-play presentations with the implementation of the madal-art method it was suggested that most teachers would want to collaborate with an AI teacher for improved instruction and individualized student learning while they would take the instructional authority over the AI teacher in the classroom.

  • Sound effects coming with appropriate tactile stimuli can strengthen its reality. For example, gunfire in games and movies, if it is accompanied by vibrating effects, can enhance the impressiveness. On a similar principle, adding the vibration information to existing sound data file and playing sound while generating vibration effects through haptic interfaces can augment the sound experience. In this paper, we propose a method to generate vibration information by analyzing the sound. The vibration information consists of vibration patterns and the timing within a sound file. Adding the vibration information is labor-intensive if it is done manually. We propose a sound detection algorithm to search the moments when specific sounds occur in a sound file and a method to create vibration effects at those moments. The sound detection algorithm compares the frequency characteristic of specific sounds and finds the moments which have similar frequency characteristic within a sound file. The detection ratio of the algorithm was 98% for five different kinds of gunfire. We also develop a GUI based vibrating pattern editor to easily perform the sound search and vibration generation.

  • In recent years, 3D displays are used in many media including 3D movies, TV, mobile phones, and PC games. Although 3D displays provide realistic viewing experience as compared with 2D displays, they also carry issues such as visual fatigue or size distortion. Focusing on the latter, we developed prediction function of object size perception as a function of object depth in 3D display. In Experiment 1, subjects observed 3D square of a fixed size of varying depth, and manipulated 2D square to make it as large as the 3D square. Conversely, in Experiment 2, subjects observed 2D square of a fixed size, and manipulated 3D square of varying depth to make it as large as the 2D square. In both Experiments 1 and 2, we found that size perception of 3D square linearly changed depending on depth of the square, and the linear relationship between depth and size was identical in both experiments. The predictive regression function, which predicts object size perception based on object depth, obtained in this research will be very useful in the creation of 3D media contents.

  • In the future there would be many kinds of digital images for many industrial markets. 3D stereoscopic images for variable fields; medical operation, film and animation, broadcasting, internet, game, or design for art and architecture. And many people to work about computer programming, and digital image making will concern about it more and more. However, these kinds works and studies are focused on the professional technical fields like 3D display or computer programming technology so far. To revitalize the market of a variable stereoscopic contents, there should build up the foundation for easy processing of the making stereoscopic images. This paper is based on stereoscopic making skills for anaglyph system. An anaglyph system has an old history about making stereoscopic images, and very simple method to produce the stereoscopic images. Particularly this study is focused on color compositing technique, and camera positioning on the compositing system. It will help optimization of the environments to create 3D motion graphic and animation contents.

  • Due to the merits of OLED displays such as fast responsiveness, wide view angle, and power efficiency, their use has increased. However, despite the power efficiency of OLED displays, the portion of their power consumption among the total power consumption is still high since user interaction-based applications such as instant messaging, video play, and games are frequently used. Their power consumption varies significantly depending on the display contents and thus color transformation is one of the low-power techniques used in OLED displays. Prior low-power color transformation techniques have not been rigorously studied in terms of satisfaction of the human visual system, and have not considered optimal visual satisfaction and power consumption at the same time in relation to color transformation. In this paper, we propose a novel low-power color transformation technique which strictly considers human visual system-awareness as well as optimization of both visual satisfaction and power consumption in a balanced way. Experimental results show that the proposed technique achieves better human visual satisfaction in terms of visuality and also shows on average 13.4% and 22.4% improvement over a prior one in terms of power saving.

  • Augmented reality (AR) using a head mounted display (HMD) is used in various fields such as military, medicine, manufacturing, gaming, and education. In this paper, we discuss the design and fabrication of the AR optical system, which is most essential for HMD. The AR optical system for HMD requires a wide transparent area in which the augmented image of the display and the real world can be viewed at the same time. To this end, an AR optical system was designed and manufactured by dividing it into three parts according to each characteristic. Also, the refractive index of the ultra-violet (UV) adhesive layer required to make the three optical systems into one complete AR optical system was considered from the design stage to minimize the optical path shift phenomenon when the input light source passes through the UV adhesive layer. In addition, when designing the AR optical system, two aspheric surfaces were used to compensate for off-axis aberration and to be suitable for mass production. Finally, for HMD mass production, an aspheric AR optical system with a thickness of 11 mm, a diagonal field of view of 40°, and a weight of 11.3 g was designed and manufactured.
