Trial to Identify Irradiated Corn Powder by Viscometric and Pulsed Photostimulated Luminescence (PPSL) Methods

  • A study was performed to establish detection methods by viscometric and pulsed photostimulated luminescence (PPSL) methods for irradiated com powder. Viscosity was determined using a Brookfield DV-rotation viscometer at 3$0^{\circ}C$ and operated at 30, 60, 90, 120, 150, 180, and 210 rpm. All irradiated samples showed a decrease in Viscosity with increasing stirring speeds (rpm) and irradiation doses. Treatments at 1~3 kGy significantly decreased the viscosity. The photon counts of irradiated corn powder were measured by PPSL immediately after irradiation and exhibited an increase with increasing irradiation dose. The photon counts of irradiated com powder almost disappeared with lapse of time in room conditions, but detection of irradiation was still possible after one month at darkroom conditions. Consequently, these results suggest that the detection of irradiated com powder is possible by both viscometric and PPSL methods.

Detection of gamma irradiated South Sea cultured pearls (감마선 조사된 남양진주의 검지)

  • We have been performed on $Co^{60}$ ${\gamma}$-ray irradiation of South Sea cultured pearls, with the absorbed dose of 0.1~100 kGy at room temperature. In addition, it was investigated electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and amino acid analysis (AAA) for detection of Gamma irradiated South Sea cultured pearls. It was observed that the irradiated South Sea cultured pearls revealed additional free radical peak such as $CO_2^-$, at a g-factor of $2.001{\pm}0.002$ in EPR spectra. From the amino acid analysis (AAA), it was shown that some of amino acid in the protein of the nacre destroyed after ${\gamma}$-ray; glutamic acid residue by 11.43 %, alanine by 3.11 %, and histidine by 43.75 %. It was useful to detect the irradiated South Sea cultured pearls by EPR measurement in our study.

  • $\alpha$-$Fe_2O_3$ thin film gas sensors were deposited at various temperature by CVD method. Polycrystalline $\alpha$-$Fe_2O_3$ thin films were deposited at $175^{\circ}C$ and $200^{\circ}C$. $\gamma$-$\alpha$-$Fe_2O_3$ phase was obtained when the deposition temperature was higher than $250^{\circ}C$. The crystallite size of $\alpha$-$Fe_2O_3$ was affected by the deposition and annealing temperature. The specimen deposited at $175^{\circ}C$ showed maximum sensitivity. In this condition, the sensitivity of $\alpha$-$Fe_2O_3$ thin film for NO gas (at 250 ppm) was 3.2 and response time (at 100ppm) was 12 second.

  • The use of multi-spectral cameras is essential for day and night pedestrian detection. In this paper, a color camera and a thermal imaging infrared camera were used to detect pedestrians near a crosswalk for 24 hours at an intersection with a high risk of traffic accidents. For pedestrian detection, the YOLOv5 object detector was used, and the detection performance was improved by using color images and thermal images at the same time. The proposed system showed a high performance of 0.940 mAP in the day/night multi-spectral (color and thermal image) pedestrian dataset obtained from the actual crosswalk site.

Germination properties of Wheat and Barley Exposed to Gamma Irradiation (감마선 조사된 밀과 보리의 검지를 위한 발아특성 비교)

  • A 5-day germination test is applicable to detect biological changes in irradiated wheat and barley at low doses. Seeds were irradiated at below 0.5 kGy, husked and placed on distilled water-moistend filter paper in a covered Petri-dish. Water was supplied everyday. To evaluate the growth rate, the length of shoots and roots was measured during germination. In wheat, the shoots of all samples grew well during 5 days, but the shoot length and the daily growth extent decreased with increasing doses. The roots of non-irradiated wheat showed the highest daily growth extent during 5 days and the root length was over 20 mm at 3rd day. In barley, the growth of shoots and roots was retarded at 0.3 kGy or more after 3 days. It was concluded that if the root length was 20mm or longer within 3 days, wheat and barley were identified as non-irradiated. The germination test was proved a promising screening method for the detection of irradiated wheal and barley.

  • The motivation of this study comes from the problem recognition that the headway of passing vehicle in signalized intersections can not be merely determined by departing sequence. Traffic speed and headway data of passing vehicles in signalized intersection have been obtained by using magnetic detectors(NC 97) and detecting program, and the data was analyzed. Without special treatment, the model established on passing behavior of vehicles was meaningless from statistical view point. Hence, special treatments such as filtering (upper 85% offensive driver driven vehicle's) and log scaling of data were carried on. With this new data, meaningful model (where coefficient of determination is 0.91) was established. This model explained the fact that vehicle headway in signalized intersection is affected by speed and headway of previous vehicle and speed of itself.

  • Photostimulated luminescence (PSI) and thermoluminescence (TL) were analyzed for dried vegetables irradiated at 0, 1, 4 and 7 kGy, such as dried oak mushroom, spinach, radish leaves, water cress, radish, and pumpkin, to detect irradiation treatment. PSL results that photon counts for non-irradiated samples were lower than 700 that corresponds to negative, while those of irradiated samples over 1 kGy showed positive photon counts$(\geq5000)$, indicating irradiation treatment Meantime, TL ratio by normalization was lower than 0.021 in threshold value for non-irradiated samples and more than 0.653 for irradiated samples, and therefore it was possible to detect whether the 6 kinds of dried vegetables were irradiated or not by analyzing PSL and TL.

  • 본 연구는 가공 활선 송전선로의 이상 진단을 위한 시스템 개발에 관한 것으로 송전 철탑 경간내에 설치되어 있는 송전선을 주행하며 전선의 내부 또는 외부의 열화를 확인하기 위한 것이다. 본 연구에 의한 시스템은 지상으로부터 30m 이상의 높이에서 설치되어 운행되기 때문에 바람에 의해 낙하되지 않도록 구성하였다. 또한 복도체 또는 4도체 선로를 주행하도록 설계하였으며 345kV 고압에서도 전계 및 자계의 영향을 받지 않도록 설계하였다. 전선의 이상 검지를 위해서 카메라를 설치하여 얻어진 데이터를 영상 처리 하여 이상 부위에 대한 에너지 변화를 관찰하여 이상 유무를 판단하도록 하였다. 완성된 시스템은 설치 및 이동을 위해서 경량화 시켰으며 분해 조립이 쉽도록 구성하였다. 본 시스템의 현장 적용에 의한 실험 결과 1m/sec의 이동 속도에서 1mm 이하의 스크래치에 대하여 검출이 가능하였다.

  • 2004년 경부고속철도가 개통된 이후, 열차제어시스템에 있어서 크고 작은 여러 가지 문제점이 시스템의 안정화를 위한 초기 단계의 형태로서 발생되었다. 특히 국내에서 처음으로 열차가 300km/h로 운행됨에 따라, 열차의 고속 운행 환경에 대한 운영 및 유지보수의 어려움이 자주 유발되었다. 한 예로 2005년에는 서울에서 약 170km 남쪽에 위치한 칠곡 신호기계실(IEC) 지역에 설치된 선로변 설비인 HBD의 오동작이 발생됨에 따라 관련 설비에 대한 신뢰성은 물론 설비의 기능상의 문제점까지 전면적인 검토를 필요로 하였다. 본 논문에서는 고속선 운영 및 유지보수에 있어서 선로변 설비의 장애 원인을 조사, 분석, 검토함으로서 고속선 열차제어시스템 HBD에 대한 안정적인 운영 및 유지보수를 구현하기 위한 방안 제시를 주요 목적으로 한다.

A study on the highly sensitive metal nanowire sensor for detecting hydrogen (수소감지를 위한 고감도의 금속 나노선 센서에 관한 연구)

  • In this paper, we report on an investigation of highly sensitive sensing performance of a hydrogen sensor composed of palladium (Pd) nanowires. The Pd nanowires have been grown by electrodeposition into nanochannels and liberated from the anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) template by dissolving in an aqueous solution of NaOH. A combination of photo-lithography, electron beam lithography and a lift-off process has been utilized to fabricate the sensor using the Pd nanowire. The hydrogen concentrations for 2% and 0.1% were obtained from the sensitivities (${\Delta}R/R$) for 1.92% and 0.18%, respectively. The resistance of the Pd nanowires depends on absorption and desorption of hydrogen. Therefore, we expect that the Pd nanowires can be applicable for detecting highly sensitive hydrogen gas at room temperature.
