  • Urine bioassay has been widely used for internal dosimetry due to simple process of sampling and measurement. In this paper, we participated in the NRIP (NIST Radiochemistry Intercomparison Program) hosted by US NIST to carry out a reliable performance test of urine bioassay and introduced the measurement method and results of NRIP-2013. In customary exercise with 60 days of reporting time, bioassay results of 12 radionuclides in the synthetic urine samples were acceptable based on the performance criteria of ANSI N13.30. In emergency preparedness exercise with 8 hours of reporting time, bioassay results of 9 radionuclides showed that differences ranged from -35% to 45%. However, we concluded that urine bioassay applied for emergency preparedness exercise would be applicable for rapid screening and estimation of internal exposure within a difference of ${\pm}45%$ in the event of radiological accidents.

  • We developed the ultrasonic phased array technique for obtaining ultrasonic images of electrofusion joints of polyethylene piping. And we inspected 4 cases at fields with this technique. First case is for the 300 mm diameter polyethylene electrofusion joint by using 3.5 MHz phased array sensor, second is for the 350 mm diameter saddle electrofusion joint, third is for the 400 mm diameter electrofusion joints and the last one is for the 400 mm diameter piping joints which will be used at 300 kPa suppling pressure.

  • In this paper, we propose an effective method that automatically detects flaws in air deck by using non-destructive testing. First, Gamma correlation transform, 7 ${\times}$ 7 and 13 ${\times}$ 13 Sobel mask apply to the image of air deck acquired non-destructive testing in order to detect the edge of the image. Second, the edge detection area is smoothed and corrected by mean binarization method. Finally, the region of flaws in air deck is detected by a labeling method after removing the noise by the erosion and the dilation operation. In experimental results, we showed that the proposed detection method is effective in air deck.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine how much the movement at X-ray examinations like breathing or the positioning affects the image during chest or abdomen X-ray examination so as to create an image containing information as much as possible. The study method adopted is doing the X-ray in each of the states including breathing (inspiration & expiration) and movement in the standing chest PA X-ray and simple abdomen X-ray among the kinds of examination selected the most in hospitals and then evaluating them by applying the standards of image evaluation for each region. According to the study result, about the standing chest PA X-ray, the images taken at inspiration contain more information than those taken at expiration or having subtle movement during the examination. About the simple abdomen X-ray, the images taken at expiration contain more information than those taken at inspiration or movement. The above study results imply that regarding general X-ray examination, information we can find from the images may differ significantly according to the region examined, examination purpose, or movement during the examination like breathing.

  • In this study, we developed and examined the validity and reliability of the Test for Indicators of Positive Experiences about Science (TIPES) that measures students' positive experiences about science. We have developed TIPES through literature reviews, development of the preliminary version of TIPES, a pilot test and revisions of the preliminary version, and the test of the final version. Through literature reviews and Delpi methods, we developed the preliminary version of TIPES, which consists of five categories such as science academic emotion, science-related self-concept, science learning motivation, science-related career aspiration, and science-related attitude. Using the preliminary version, we conducted a pilot test with 198 students consisting of 4th, 6th, 8th, and 10th graders, and modified the first version based on the results from the pilot test and expert meetings. We then conducted a main test with the revised version of TIPES with 1,841 students consisting of 4th, 6th, 8th, and 10th graders. According to a confirmatory factor analysis, a reliability test and descriptive statistics analyses, TIPES found to have a good validity as well as reliability. In addition, there are statistically significant differences in the norm distribution and scores of TIPES by student's grade, gender, school location, and level of participation in science-related activities. Discussed in the conclusion are the implications of this research for science education research and science teaching and learning practices in the school.

  • Classic galactosemia (OMIM #230400) is an autosomal recessive inherited metaboic disorder caused by a deficiency of the galactose-1-phosphate uridyltransferase (GALT, EC2.7.7.12) due to mutations in the GALT gene. If untreated, classic galactosemia is a potentially lethal disease presenting with poor feeding, vomiting, jaundice, liver failure, increased bleeding tendency, and septicemia leading to death within a few days after birth. Since 2006, expansion of newborn screening has been enabled the early diagnosis and early intervention of classic galactosemia in Korea. However, newborn screening, followup testing for confirmatory diagnosis and intervention for galactosemia continue to present challenges. In Korea, the prevalence of the classic galactosemia is considered relatively low compared to that of western countries. And the genotype is also clearly different from those of other population. Therefore, our own guideline for confirmatory diagnosis and intervention is needed. Here, the diagnostic algorithm for galactosemia after positive newborn screening result in Korea has been proposed. Considering the low prevalence and different mutation spectrum in Koreans, the early mutation analysis of GALT gene could be a useful tool for the accurate diagnosis and making any treatment decision.
