  • This study was conducted to estimate genetic parameters for egg yolk cholesterol. Content of egg yok cholesterol was measured for a total of 473 hens of White Leghorn line. Cholesterol values were obtained from tee consecutively laid eggs when hens were 53 weeks of age. The yolk of each egg was weighted and freeze dried. Dried egg yolks were stored at -2$0^{\circ}C$ until analyzed. The results obtained from this study were as follows; 1. Yolk cholesterol content was measured in average $56.00\pm$0.194 mg/g dry yolk. 2. Heritability from the sire component of variance was $0.522\pm$0.215 and from the sire+dam component of variance $0.33\pm$0.209. 3. Estimates of phenotypic correlation between your cholesterol and other factors such as body weight at 20 weeks of age, age at first egg, 40-week total egg number, egg Production rate: 53-week egg weight and 53-week yolk weight were -0.0208, -0.0321, -0.0378, -0.0834, 0.0790 and 0.1624, respectively. And genetic correlation coefficients for each item in the order were -0.5293, 0.7105, -0.4062, -0.0254, 0.2164 and 0.5027, respectively. 4. These results suggest the possibility that egg Yolk cholesterol should be reduced through selecting of sire families. To breed for low egg yolk cholesterol, it makes age at first egg earlier and enhances total egg number so that we can obtain the high rate of egg Production.

  • The preventive effect of Lentinus edodes extract (LE) against constipation was studied in rats. Rats were pretreated with LE contained in drinking water at the concentration of 10%, 20% and 40% over 30 days. Constipation was induced by subcutaneous injection of loperamide (4 mg/kg/day) 3 days prior to sacrifice. Treatment of loperamide resulted in decreases in the number and wet weight of fecal pellets, and increase in the number of fecal pellet in the distal colon and cecocolon weight. In contrast, the number and wet weight of fecal pellets were increased, and the number of fecal pellet in the distal colon and the cecocolon weight were decreased in LE-pretreated groups compared to the loperamide-treated group. Blood parameters such as white blood cell, red blood cell, hemoglobin, hematocrit, platelet, mean corpuscular volume, mean corpuscular hemoglobin and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration, and serum alanine transaminase, aspartate aminotransferase and alkaline phosphatase activities, and blood urea nitrogen and creatinine values were not significantly different between the groups. In addition, LE (0.5 mg/mL) increased spontaneous contractile activity, which was reduced by atropine or loperamide in isolated rat ileum. Theses results suggest that the improvement of constipation symptoms in LE-pretreated rats resulted from a stimulatory effect of LE on intestine contractile activity.

  • This study was conducted for a period for 5 weeks in order to evaluate effects of brewer's yeast slurry(BYS) on the growth performance, organ development and blood composition of broiler chicks. A total number of 84 one day old broiler chicks were allocated to one of three supplemented diets: 0%(control), 2% and 4% BYS. Body weight gain and feed efficiency of chicks fed the diet supplemented with 4% BYS significantly was increased by 9% and 8%, respectively, compared to the control diet(P<0.05). The BYS supplements did not affect weights of liver, heart and abdominal fat, and their ratios per body weight. However, in 4% BYS supplement group, ratio of liver to body weight significantly decreased(P<0.05) by 12%, compared to the control. The supplement of 4% BYS decreased the concentration of triglyceride by 31%, and increased the concentration of high density lipoprotein(HDL) by 26%, compared to the control(P<0.05). These results indicated that the supplementation of 4% BYS in diet can improve body weight gain as well as feed efficiency, and increased the concentration of blood HDL, and ratio of HDL to total-cholesterol of broiler chicks.

  • In order to investigate the impact of recycling agricultural wastes as feed for mealworm (Tenebrio molitor), we evaluated the replacing effect by the different level of tangerine shell, Chinese cabbage, king oyster mushroom (Pleurotus eryngii) and Enoki mushroom (Flammulina velutipes) substrates on wheat bran feed. Larval survival rate, larval weight, developmental period of larva, pupation rate and pupal weight were evaluated. In tangerine shell and Chinese cabbage replacement group, no replacing effects found. In all groups replacing by spent King oyster mushroom (Pleurotus eryngii) substrate, survival rate of larva was similar to that of control group but larvae weighed less than control group significantly. Developmental period of larva increases in the group of King oyster mushroom substrate replacement. Larval and pupal weight in Enoki mushroom (Flammulina velutipes) substrate by the level of 40 and 50%, replacement effect showed best results in successive breeding considering pupation rate. It is concluded that replacing 40 and 50% of Enoki mushroom (Flammulina velutipes) substrate is appropriate to substituted diet of Tenebrio molitor larvae.

  • A feeding experiment was conducted on rats to investigate the inhibitive effects of baik-kimchi against the toxicity of Amaranth (Am, Food Red No.2) on growth, fecal weights and bulk, and the digestibility of protein and lipid. The body weight of the Am diet group (5% Amaranth) remained at the lowest level of all diet groups, because of diarrhea symptoms throughout the feeding period, 229.8 g of total body weight or 79.4% of the basal diet group (289.4 g). However, in the baik-kimchi diet group (10% baik-kimchi powder+5% Amaranth) no diarrhea symptoms were evident and total body weight remained at a similar level (280.3 g) to the basal diet group. It therefore appears that baik-kimchi offers an inhibitive effect against the toxicity of Am. In the baik-kimchi diet group, the total fecal weight (173.99 g/3 weeks) was 15 times that of the basal diet group (11.13 g/3 weeks) suggesting that baik-kimchi has the effect of increasing fecal bulk. The large intestine and the cecum of the baik-kimchi diet group were significantly (p<0.05) heavier than those of the Am diet group. The digestibility of protein (50.26%) and lipid (58.37%) in the Am diet group was very low in comparison with these in the baik-kimchi diet group (87.30% and 92.12%, respectively). This result indicates that the low digestibility of these nutrients in the Am diet group was directly responsible for the decrease of weight. Consequently, it is demonstrated that baik-kimchi can inhibit the effects of the toxicity of Am in rats.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the bark production from a top branch(Woojuk) of lacquer tree(Rhus verniciflua) that collected Rhus lacquer in summer, analyzing a relationship between several factors - diameter, tree weight, weight of Woojuk and bark. The weight of Woojuk averaged was made up $48\%$ of the tree on average. As the weight of the tree increased, however, the Woojuk showed the rising trend. It was turned out that the tree size for making 1kg of dry bark must be at least DBB 8cm. The result on Woojuk's bark was that $43.3\%$ of total trees produced a green bark of 1.1kg to 1.5kg, and most of them put out 1.5kg and less. Also the rate of trees to make 0.6kg to 1.0kg of dry bark was highest in $50.8\%$, but its production in most trees was 1.0kg and below. As the moisture content of a green bark averaged $39\%$, it is estimated that the production of 1kg in dry bark requires at least 6kg of top branch in lacquer tree.

  • There was some difficulty dewatering properties due to small porosity diameter of cake, when pigment sludge contained fine particle was formed by cake under the dewatering. It was difficult to dewater the sludge with fine particles with the conventional mechanical dewatering method. This study was to improve the dewatering rate as discharging the water from porosity of cake easily, supplying the low heat to the cake layer. Thermal dewatering equipment of piston type to keep up constant temperature on the cake was set up and relative experiment was conducted for sludge of 200 g with fine pigment particle. As test results. filtration of 176.8 g, cake weight of 19.4 g, cake thickness of 4.2 mm was measured, and it was analyzed that the water content of cake was 47 wt% and dewatering velocity, which moaned the residual d교 sloid amount per dewatering area, was $2.1DS\;m^{2}{\cdot}cycle$. This results showed that filtration increased, cake weight and thickness decreased and dewatering velocity increased against mechanical dewatering method. And water content of cake decreased about 30%, so the result which dewatering rate improved was drew generally. The reason is that the inner vapor pressure working at the cake porosity increased as applying the low heat to the cake layer, which lead to discharge the water from porosity easily. Therefore, this study was estimated by the useful technology for sludge reduction.

  • Effects of Korean traditional soybean fermented foods on weight reduction and lipid lowering activities were studied using Spraque-Dawley (SD) rats fed a high fat diet. The rats were raised for four weeks after adaptation period on either a normal diet (ND, based on the AIN-93 diet), high fat diet (HFD, supplemented with 12% lard oil in the ND), or diets containing 10% of freeze dried Doenjang, Chungkukjang, Kochujang, or Samjang to HFD. The final weight, food efficiency ratio (FER) and the weight of adipose tissue were decreased significantly by the consumption of Doenjang and Samjang, compared to HFD (p<0.05). The contents of cholesterol and triglyceride increased by HFD were reduced by the fermented foods in liver and perirenal fat tissues of the rats, especially Doenjang and Samjang diets showed high lipid lowering activity. And TG and cholesterol contents in the plasma serum were simillar trend to liver and perirenal fat tissue. These results suggested that Korean traditional soybean fermented foods, especially Doenjang showed the highest weight reduction and lipid lowering activities of the rats fed high fat diet.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effects of Plantago asiatica L. extract on anti oxidative potential, free radical generation and the lipid levels in rats. Sprague-Dawley(SD) rats were divided into two groups based on their diet, as follows: the AIN-76 diet (control group), and the modified AIN-76 diet(cholesterol 0.5%) with 0.5% P. asiatica extract, for 7 weeks. The body weight and teed efficiency ratios of the two groups did not significantly differ. The antioxidative potentials more significantly increased in the group that was fed P. asiatica extract than in the control group(p<0.05). There was no difference in the rate of free radical generation, though. The weights of the organs, such as heart, kidney, liver, and spleen, of the rats in the two groups did not differ, though. The ratio of the HDL cholesterol to the total cholesterol in the P. asiatica group was significantly higher than that in the control group, and the other serum lipid parameters (total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, triglyceride, and phospholipids) did not differ between the two groups. These results imply that supplementation with P. asiatica extract may improve the antioxidant potential and decrease the lipid levels in the blood.

  • Eleutherococcus gracilistylus is a designated rare plant by the Korea Forest Service, a deciduous broad leaf shrub native to the Gotjawal region, Jejudo. This study aimed to analyze the growth responses of E. gracilistylus to three environment factors such as light, moisture, and organic matter, and measure its ecological niche breadth. Based on these results, an attempt was made to identify suitable environmental conditions. E. gracilistylus exhibited increased above-ground length, leaf area, and plant leaf weight under intermediate conditions of light availability(L3, 50% of natural light), rather than very high or very low light conditions. Moisture availability and organic matter availability showed variations in growth responses in terms of leaf count and plant leaf weight. Under moisture availability, growth was favorable under or below intermediate conditions (M3, 240ml), while under organic matter availability, growth response was better above intermediate conditions (N3, 12%). Ecological niche breadth showed in the light factor(0.951), the moisture factor(0.977), and the organic matter content one(0.964). These results indicate that the preferred habitat of E. gracilistylus is somewhat shady, slightly dry, and has a lot of nutrients, and that the environmental factor that has the greatest impact on growth is the amount of light, which is considered to be a priority consideration for habitat management in its native area.
