A Combination Model of Earthwork equipment using System Dynamics (시스템 다이내믹스를 활용한 토공장비의 조합 모형 연구)

  • The earth work has been improved with the utilization of capital intensive equipments. However, work performance is not satisfactory yet due to its experience-oriented characteristics in selecting the combination of earth work equipments. Therefore, it is required to study on appropriate and systematic methods in selecting a set of equipments for earth work in order to optimize the cost and time as well as to improve the productivity. The objectives of this paper are as followed : (1) developing an optimum combination model of earth work equipments by using a system dynamics technique. (2) testing and evaluating the model by the sample application to a case study. The research is limited to the work of excavating, loading and hauling. The suggested model is proved in practice, so it will assist engineers to make the proper decision for equipment planning of earth work.

  • RFID-based logistics is increasingly adopted in various areas of the construction industry as a technology that can improve effectiveness and efficiency of construction logistics. However, the technology is not widely adopted yet compared to the potential of RFID applications in the construction industry that the existing research has shown. Since the validation and verification of the benefit from RFID applications were biased toward the productivity of managers, more wide aspect of validation and verification is necessary. Therefore, the objective of this paper is to show how much impact the RFID-based logistics management system can have on resource leveling and allocation that have a direct impact on a construction project as well as the managers' productivity improvement that was shown by the existing research. This paper also discusses issues arisen during the test process.

Productivity and Economic Analysis of Sandwich Panel Construction Work by Shop Fabrication (공장가공에 따른 샌드위치 패널공사의 생산성 및 경제성 분석)

  • The domestic construction market started to expand steadily since 1970s. The building market which utilizes a sandwich panel with advantages of economical construction expenses and convenient construction has grown rapidly in recent years. However, the companies which specialize in constructing sandwich panels are relatively small or medium size, compared with other construction companies. As a result, studies on the improvement of productivity have not been conducted sufficiently. In this study, the construction sites of sandwich panel are investigated, and the work processes by each team are analyzed. Additionally, the productivity and the construction cost of each work group are analyzed by constructing a model using the Web-Cyclone. It analyzed sensitivities about change of productivity and work costs following in processing place of the panel which is one of the productivity effect factors, so it assayed the optimized productivity by each work group and work costs. Analysis showed that 30% of productivity has improved compared with the factory processing work group, and analysis of work costs showed that about 15% of work costs was increased. Also sensitivity analysis of opening ratio showed that the work costs optimization will be accomplished when about 20% of opening was processed from the factory.

  • Korean construction companies first advanced to the international markets in 1960's and so far have brought more than 4,900 projects which account for 193 billion dollars approximately. With the large increase of national employment and income being followed by the achievement, Korea's construction industry has made an enormous contribution to the improvement of domestic economy for the last 40 years. However, recently the increased risk in international markets as well as the sharpening competition with foreign companies promising in terms of advanced technologies and low labor cost have been driving Korean construction away from the market shares. According to ENR (Engineering News Record, 1994~2003), it is revealed that 15.1% of top 225 global contractors are suffering from loss in international construction markets. This phenomenon is largely due to the highly uncertain characteristics of international projects, which are inherently exposed to various and complicated risky situations. Furthermore, especially for Korean construction companies, it is often the case that the failure in an international construction project cannot be offset by even a sufficient number of successful domestic achievements. Therefore, not only the selective screening among the nominated projects which have strong possibility of collapse but the systematic strategies for controlling potential risk factors are also considered indispensable in international construction portfolio management. The purpose of this study is to first analyze the causal relationships of the profit-influencing variables and the project success, and develop the profitability forecasting model in international construction projects.

  • 기후변화는 기상재해뿐만 아니라 지속적인 해수면 상승의 원인이 되고 있으며, 자연 생태계화 인간의 사회, 경제시스템 전반에 걸쳐 영향을 미치고 있으며, 건설분야도 이와 무관하지 않다. 특히 기후변화는 해수면 상승으로 이어져 사회기반시설인 항구, 연안도로, 철도, 빌딩 등과 연안산업인 석유 및 석유화학공장, 그리고 서비스업인 관광에 대한 위협으로 나타나고 있다. 이러한 해수면 상승은 토지 및 건물의 재산 가치 하락과 해수면 상승에 따른 보호비용 증대, 구조물의 급속한 노후화에 따른 유지관리비용의 증가뿐만 아니라 정치적 제도적 불안 및 사회동요 등을 유발할 수 있다. 우리나라의 경우, 지난 100년간 6대 도시 평균기온이 약 $1.5^{\circ}C$ 상승하였으며, 해수면(제주기준)은 40년간 22cm가 상승하였다. 특히 제주의 경우 매년 5mm씩의 해수면 상승을 보이고 있으며 이는 전 지구 해수면 상승률보다 3배 높은 수치이다. 본 연구는 해수면의 상승에 따른 건설분야의 영향을 분석하기 위한 선도적인 연구로서, 연구의 범위를 제주지역에 국한하였으며, 해수면 상승에 따른 영향 지역을 추출하고, 영향 지역 내 건설시설물 정보를 추출하기 위한 절차를 규명하였다. 본 연구 결과는 유지보수 및 시설물 이설에 따른 공사비 산출의 근거가 될 뿐만 아니라 관련 예산 확보에 대한 근거 자료로 활용될 수 있을 것이다. 향후 관련 지역의 유지보수 및 이설 공사비 정보의 추출 및 DB 구축을 통해 연안 건설 시설물의 이설에 따른 공사비를 예측할 수 있을 것이다.

  • The proportion of maintenance work has been increasing due to the recent aging of the infrastructure, but the standardized construction cost estimation standards are insufficient for this. In particular, reinforced concrete structures are being applied to many structures such as buildings and bridges, and various construction methods for maintenance of reinforced concrete structures are being developed and applied. In this study, we surveyed about the current status of the construction method for the maintenance work of reinforced concrete structures and analyze the factors of the revision of the construction cost estimate standard for the reinforced concrete structure maintenance.

  • BIM (Building Information Modeling) is a new paradigm that includes construction life-cycle, and BIM has become mandatory regulation according to the Public Procurement Service since 2016, which accelerates its application. BIM is now expand from architectural field to infrastructure industry. Through pilot projects, BIM has been challenged with verification process. This trend has affected to maintenance and operation (M&O) phase of construction life-cycle. Advanced country has already published their research and result with feasibility study and guidelines. In this paper, we conduct the feasibility study to adopt BIM-based infrastructure management system. Bridges and tunnels were selected as application target, and benefit/cost ratio were used. The result shows that BIM-based infrastructure management system is feasible when the level of detail is more than "Medium" in bridge, and "High" in tunnel.

  • Our country's bidding system had made the lowest price successful bid system in foundation before introducing eligibility review system at July, 1995, and a averaged- price successful bid system or the restrictive-lowest price successful bid system had been enforced by repletion. However, they were introduced as dumping that do not reach in direct cost level of construction cost is generalized and worry about illegal construction practices rises by the lowest price successful bid system. According as they had not been promoted construction company's technical development effort or cost reduction effort, vicious circle that advocate competition principle again and recur as the lowest price successful bid system is repeated last 50 years. Therefore, I present improvement direction that can satisfy all Global Standard and real condition of our country through foreign countries example analysis to cope with the rapidly changing building circumstances socially and economically to correspond actively to the construction industry's reorganization to reconsider domestic construction engineering's competitive power.

A Correlation Analysis of Influence Factors of Nonconformity in Construction Projects (건설프로젝트의 품질결함의 발생요인간 상관분석)

  • Construction defects are major components that result in cost overruns and schedule delays in construction projects. There have been extensive research efforts to investigate the cause of defects. However, little effort has been devoted to analyze correlation among various reasons of construction defects while a defect is not usually an outcome of a single cause, but rather occurs when several interrelated causes combine. Based on this recognition, this paper analyzes 831 nonconformity reports collected from 30 construction projects in Korea from 2011 to 2014. The correlation analysis revealed that a significant portion of construction defects occurred in the procurement and construction phase and as the pattern of function defect and installation defect. Triggered by human error, defective material and faulty method, these defects are treated by conccession, repair, rework that can significantly lower the cost and schedule performance. This paper is significant in terms of providing a theoretical basis for analyzing correlation among various reasons of construction defects and quantitative measures for establishing effective defect prevention strategies.

Schematic Cost Estimation Method using Case-Based Reasoning: Focusing on Determining Attribute Weight (사례기반추론을 이용한 초기단계 공사비 예측 방법: 속성 가중치 산정을 중심으로)

  • Because the estimated cost at early stage has great influence on decisions of project owner, the importance of early cost estimation is increasing. However, it depends on experience and knowledge of the estimator mainly due to shortage of information. Those tendency developed into case-based reasoning(CBR) method which solves new problems by adapting previous solution to similar past problems. The performance of CBR model is affected by attribute weight, so that its accurate determination is necessary. Previous research utilizes mathematical method or subjective judgement of estimator. In order to improve the problem of previous research, this suggests CBR schematic cost estimation method using genetic algorithm to determine attribute weight. The cost model employs nearest neighbor retrieval for selecting past case. And it estimates the cost of new cases based on cost information of extracted cases. As the result of validation for 17 testing cases, 3.57% of error rate is calculated. This rate is superior to accuracy rate proposed by AACE and the method to determine attribute weight using multiple regression analysis and feature counting. The CBR cost estimation method improve the accuracy by introducing genetic algorithm for attribute weight. Moreover, this makes user understand the problem-solving process easier than other artificial intelligence method, and find solution within short time through case retrieval algorithm.
