  • Interest in hydrogen, as an energy carrier, has been growing to solve the problems on shortage of fossile fuels and greenhouse gas. According to the standard KGS FU 551 for stationary fuel cell installation, the fuel cell system could be connected up to two common exhausts to one floor. depending on the required power for building or the installation environment in buildings, multiple fuel cell systems could be installed. Afterwards the number of perforations and flues could be decided. Hence, economic efficiency in significantly determined with respect to installation area and the number of fuel cell systems. In addition, the complexity of common vent structure for stationary fuel cell systems could be changed. In this paper, Verification experiments were conducted by connecting the common exhaust system to the fuel cell simulation system and the actual fuel cell system. Humidity and temperature were changed at ON/OFF, but no factors were found to affect performance or system malfunction. Exhaust emissions were also measured to obtain optimized values. We intend to expand the diffusion of stationary fuel cells by verifying safety of common exhaust structure.

  • In this study, a solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) system model including balance of plant (BOP) for building electric power generation is developed to study the effect of operating conditions on the system efficiency and power output. SOFC system modeled in this study consists of three heat-exchangers, an external reformer, burner, and two blowers. A detailed computational cell model including internal reforming reaction is developed for a planer SOFC stack which is operated at intermediate temperature (IT). The BOP models including an external reformer, heat-exchangers, a burner, blowers, pipes are developed to predict the gas temperature, pressure drops and flow rate at every component in the system. The SOFC stack model and BOP models are integrate to estimate the effect of operating parameters on the performance of the system. In this study, the design of experiment (DOE) is used to compare the effects of fuel flow rate, air flow rate, air temperature, current density, and recycle ratio of anode off gas on the system efficiency and power output.

  • The code and standards related to fuel cells were analyzed to derive the SOFC(Solid Oxide Fuel Cell) stack safety performance evaluation items and evaluation methode. Safety performance evluation of the SOFC stack was tested by quoting derived test items. The stack used in the test is an anode-supported type 2 Cell stack (Active surface area : 220cm) manufactured by MICO Inc, and SOFC stack safety performance evaluation system used for the test is self-manufactured. We conducted a leakage test, current voltage characteristic test, rated output test, and power response characteristics test. In the safety performance evaluation test, the stack showed no gas leakage, the maximum output and rated output was recorded to 65.6 W(1.41 V, 46.5 A, $422mA/cm^2$), 62.3 W(1.57 V, 40 A, $363mA/cm^2$). In the power response characteristics test verified that the output is kept stable within two seconds. At the maximum load (40 A) and the minimum load (8 A), the output was recorded 62 W and 16W in $750^{\circ}C$. This study will contribute to the universalization and to provide much safe environment of operating the solid oxide fuel cell system.

  • A solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) based hybrid desiccant cooling system model is developed to study the effect of fuel utilization rate of the SOFC on the reduction of energy consumption and $CO_2$ emission. The SOFC-based hybrid desiccant cooling system consists of an SOFC system and a Hybrid desiccant cooling system (HDCS). The SOFC system includes a stack and balance of plant (BOP), and HDCS. The HDCS consists of desiccant rotor, indirect evaporative cooler, electric heat pump (EHP), and heat exchangers. In this study, using energy load data of a commercial office building and SOFC-based HDCS model, the amount of ton of oil equivalent (TOE) and ton of $CO_2$ ($tCO_2$) are calculated and compared with the TOE and $tCO_2$ generation of the EHP using grid electricity.

  • Interest in renewable energy is increasing for eco-friendly use of energy, and fuel cells are being used in various ways such as houses and buildings as power generation methods that have low emissions such as $NO_X$ and $CO_2$. As the supply of fuel cells expands, more and more boilers are installed in the existing buildings, but safety management is not being performed properly. Therefore, in this study, a prior study was conducted on the status of fuel cell-boiler complex installation and related criteria, and the risk factors were analyzed according to the installation environment and structure. Based on these standards, the safety performance of the fuel cell-boiler combined installation is assessed by conducting a demonstration using the starting product of the simulated operation to derive the installation criteria (proposal) for the fuel cell-boiler combined installation. The installation criteria (proposal) include the construction and connection method of the piping according to the fuel cell-boiler complex installation.
