  • In the solid rocket propellant combustion, dynamic phase change from solid to liquid to vapor occurs across the melt layer. During the burning surface, micro scale bubbles form as liquid and gas phases are mixed in the intermediate zone between the propellant and the flame. The experimentally measured thickness of this layer called the foam layer is approximately 1 micron at 1 atmosphere. In this paper, we present a new melting layer model derived from the classical phase change theory. The model results show that the surface of burning grows and propagate uniformly at a velocity of $r=ap^n$.

  • Foam reduces the mobility of gas phase in porous media to overcome gravity override and to divert acid into desired layers in the petroleum industry and to enhance the efficiency of environmental remediation. Recent experimental studies on foam show that foam exhibits a remarkably different flow rheology depending on the flow regime. This study, for the first time, focuses on the issues of foam diversion process under the conditions relevant to groundwater remediation, combining results from laboratory linear-flow experiments and a simple numerical model with permeability contrasts. Linear flow tests performed at two different permeabilities (k = 9.1 and 30.4 darcy) confirmed that two flow regimes of steady-state strong foams were also observed within the permeability range of shallow geological formations. Foam exhibited a shear-thinning behavior in a low-quality regime and near Newtonian rheology in a high-quality regime. Data taken from linear flow tests were incorporated into a simple numerical model to evaluate the efficiency of foam diversion process in the presence of permeability contrasts. The simple model illustrated that foam in the high-quality regime exhibited a successful diversion but foam in the low-quality regime resulted in anti-diversion, implying that only foam in the high-quality regime would be applicable to the diversion process. Sensitivity study proved that the success of diversion process using foam in the high-quality regime was primarily controlled by the limiting capillary pressures (${P_c}{^*}$) of the two layers of interest. Limitations and implications are also discussed and included.

  • RANS computational analysis was performed on the head of the launch vehicle including the hammerhead nose pairing in the supersonic regime. The two-dimensional axisymmetric analysis was performed by using laminar, fully turbulent and transition models and compared with the experimental data. It was observed that different flow phenomena occurred depending on the Reynolds number. Under the high Reynolds number condition, the boundary layer becomes turbulent, which is not separated from the surface of the launch vehicle. With the low Reynolds number condition, laminar separation bubble was produced due to the separation and reattachment of the boundary layer on the expansion-compression edge of the hammerhead type nose fairing. The three-dimensional computations with the angle of attack showed a fully detached vortical structure due to the laminar separation bubble. It is proved that the turbulent transition should be considered to predict the separation bubble with the Reynolds number.

  • Nickel-copper foam electrodes with pore gradient micro framework and nano-ramified wall have been prepared by using an electrochemical deposition process. Growth habit of nickel-copper co-deposits was quite different from that of pure nickel deposit. In particular, the ramified structure of the individual particles was getting clear with chloride ion content in the electrolyte. The ratio of nickel to copper in the deposits decreased with the distance away from the substrate and the more chloride ions in the electrolyte led to the more nickel content throughout the deposits. Compositional analysis for the cross section of a ramified branch, together with tactical selective copper etching, proved that the copper content increased with approaching central region of the cross section. Such a composition gradient actually disappeared after heat treatment. It is anticipated that the pore gradient nickel-copper nanostructured foams presented in this work might be a promising option for the high-performance electrode in functional electrochemical devices.

  • Microcrystalline collagen was manufactured from raw pigskins and its functional properties were measured. It showed a thixotropic behavior. The maximum viscosity was obtained at pH 3.5 and the viscosity increased with the increase of concentration in a nonlinear manner. The increase in temperature decreadsed the viscosity while the effect of temperature was greater at pH below 4.5. Foaming capacity was similar to that of gelatin but superior to that of egg white at 1%. The foam stability was inferior to that of egg white. Emulsifying capacity was lower than that of pork. Values from physical and chemical analysis were somewhat different from those of medical-grade microcrystalline collagen made from bovine cerium collagen.

  • Incompressible Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations with $\varepsilon{-SST}$ turbulence model are adopted for the investigation of the flow fields between the square cylinder and the ground. When the grounds moves, the diminish of the shear layer intensity on the ground promotes the interaction between the lower and the upper separated shear layer of the cylinder. Hence vortex shedding occurs at the lower gap height than stationary ground. In the moving ground, the secondary shedding frequency disappears due to the absence of the separation bubble on the ground which exists in the stationary ground. In addition, the shedding frequency and aerodynamic coefficients in the moving ground become higher than those of the stationary ground.

  • An optical method was introduced to investigate the dispersion stability of Saengshik beverages (SB) containing 3.7-11.7% Saengshik powder (SP). Time course changes in backscattering light flux (BSLF) from SB were monitored by a Turbiscan. BSLF in the bottom and top layers of SB increased by forming sediment and foam, respectively, while that in the middle layer decreased by clarifying. With SP levels, sedimentation in SB was retarded, but the height of total sedimentation layer was increased. A logarithmic model was developed to fit to the changes in BSLF with time, showing determination coefficients of 0.979-0.988. The levels of SP in SB influenced the migration speed of the clarification front as well as the numbers of separated layers; 2 layers in SB containing 3.7% SP, 3 in 5.7-9.7%, and 4 in 11.7%. Formation of clear layers started after 17-29 min and continued for 22-53 min. The clarification was retarded most in SB containing 7.7% SP, indicating the most stable SP level for the SB preparation.

  • In the solid rocket propellant combustion, the dynamic phase change from solid to liquid to vapor occurs across the melt layer. During the surface burning, liquid and gas phases are mixed in the intermediate zone between the propellant and the flame to form micro scale bubbles. The known thickness of the melt layer is approximately 1 micron at $10^5$ Pa. In this paper, we present a model of the melt layer structure and the dynamic motion of the melt front derived from the classical phase field theory. The model results show that the melt layer grows and propagates uniformly according to exp(-1/$T_s$) with $T_s$ being the propellant surface temperature.

  • Colloid and surface chemistry have been focused on surface area and surface energy. Local surface properties such as surface density, interaction, molecular orientation and reactivity have been one of interesting subjects. Systems of such surface energy being important would be listed as association colloid, emulsion, particle dispersion, foam, and 2-D surface and film. Such nanoparticle systems would be applied to drug delivery systems and functional cosmetics with biocompatible and degradable materials, while nanoparticles having its size of several nm to micron, and wide surface area, have been accepted as a possible drug carrier because their preparation, characteristics and drug loading have been inves-tigated. The biocompatible carriers were also used for the solubilization of insoluble drugs, the enhancement of skin absorption, the block out of UV radiation, the chemical stabilization and controlled release. Nano/micro emulstion system is classified into nano/microsphere, nano/microcapsule, nano/microemulsion, polymeric micelle, liposome according to its prep-aration method and size. Specially, the preparation method and industrial applications have been introduced for polymeric micelles self-assembled in aqueous solution, nano/microapsules controlling the concentration and activity of high concen-tration and activity materials, and monolayer or multilayer liposomes carrying bioactive ingredients.

  • Three types of diffuser systems were manufactured and applied to investigate the effect of liquid fertilization of pig manure slurry by application of aeration processes. In the first type reactor, commonly used diffuser system, which diffuse air upward by diffusing aerator fixed at the bottom of the reactor is installed. In case of the second type, air diffuser is installed 10 cm above of the bottom of a reactor. In the third type reactor, the venturi-type air diffuser is installed at circulation pipe, which return pig slurry in the reactor(mixing-in-pipe process). The pig manure slurry separated to solid/liquid was flowed into the experimental reactor, and left as it for one week to precipitate solids. The concentration of organic matter, T-N, T-P and BOD in the raw pig manure slurry flowed into the reactor of bottom-fixed type aeration process were 1.82%, 4,400 mg/L, 360 mg/L and 13,542 mg/L, respectively. After aeration the concentration of organic matters, T-N, T-P and BOD in the slurry were 2.01%, 4,400 mg/L, 420 mg/L and 16,824 mg/L, respectively. The concentration of organic matter, T-N, T-P and BOD in the mixing-in-pipe type changed from 1.58%, 3,700 mg/L, 260 mg/L and 15,735 mg/L to 1.96%, 4,000 mg/L, 340 mg/L, and 18,098 mg/L, respectively. Changes of the concentration of organic matter, T-N, T-P and BOD of the pig manure slurry collected from the middle layers of two aeration reactors; bottom aeration process and the mixing-in-pipe process, were 10.4%, 0%, 16.7% and 24.2% and 24.0%, 8.1%, 30.8% and 15.0%, respectively. The thickness of foam layer generated on the surface of pig manure slurry in aeration tank was thinner in mixing-in-pipe reactor than bottom-fixed type aeration reactor.
