  • The purpose of this study is to review person-centered care models and the scientific evidence for the impact of person-centered care in U.S. nursing homes, and to analyze the applicability of person-centered care for Korean long-term care system. The most commonly recognized person-centered care models were Eden Alternative, Green House, and Wellspring model. The core components of the three models were autonomy, close relationships, homelike environment, and staff empowerment. Thirty eight empirical studies including 10 model testing studies and 28 studies to examine the impact of person-centered care interventions indicated generally positive outcomes in terms of residents, family, and staff/organization level. The authors analyzed the current situation in the Korean long-term care system with respect to the specific core constructs of person-centered care, and proposed applicable models and practical suggestions in consideration of Korean context. Lastly, future considerations regarding policy and research were discussed.

  • The study was conducted to examine the possible psychological difference in visual preference for natural landscape depending on the residence characteristic of the visitors, with the aim to use as the reference when creating space for natural landscape. Visitors were classified into three groups, namely, urban, suburban, and rural residents, and their preferred type of landscape was surveyed. The result showed that regardless of their residence the highest preference was to the place with superior natural landscape features, and among such features the common preference was toward the landscapes with horizons and those with animals. Urban and suburban residents showed similar preference pattern, and there was artistically significant difference with rural residents. In this respect, the difference in preference for natural landscapes could be induced between urban and rural residents. Rural residents had similar preference with urban residents in that they both preferred the place with superior natural landscape features, but differed in that the former had significantly higher preference toward the landscapes that have mixed artificial elements. From the above research, the following conclusions can be inferred:for regions that need to create natural landscapes, differentiated visual landscape plans and strategies need to be established taking into account, inter alia, the natural richness of the neighborhood natural environment; for regions that need to conserve and manage natural environment and landscapes, the measures to adjust the natural landscape management plans need to be established taking into account the neighborhood environment of the protected areas and the number of visitors to the region.

  • This study investigated the sitting areas preferred to use by assisted living residents in the U.S., compared the perceptions of staff and residents, and analyzed the effects of residents' and spatial characteristics on the preference for use of main sitting areas such as lounge, dining area, activity room and outdoor area. A total of 102 participants(66 residents and 36 staff) from eight facilities in the seven counties of southern Texas were asked about two sitting areas residents like to spend time at. The results of the study were as follows: The most frequently mentioned sitting areas were the activity and outdoor area as per the residents, but the dining area and lounge as per the staff. It might be due to that the view of staff might have been limited to sitting areas usually used by the severely frail residents. Residents using higher level of mobility assistance such as wheelchairs and walkers, or living in the facility having more dispersed sitting areas were less likely to prefer to use the lounge. The residents who were younger or having good centralized outdoor area were more likely to prefer to use the outdoor area. The preference for use of dining area was affected by its proximity from the residents' individual rooms. Diverse survey methods need to be developed for a more in-depth collection and analysis of data from functionally frail older residents and staff caring for them.

For the color of the floor, results showed that the calm tone of YR was mostly distributed. Secondly, for the favored colors of finishing materials in each space, the greatest distribution of preference color was found to be the N (white) group (series) in the case of ceilings, For general walls, the bright tone of the N (white) group was the most common in living rooms, and the bright tone of RP was used mostly in couples' rooms and girls' rooms. The bright tone of B and PB were found mostly in boys' bedrooms. In the case of the floor color, results showed the largest distribution was the calm tone of YR. For point walls, the preference was for various kinds of bright and brilliant colors. Thirdly, we could determine that extroverts (E) strongly disliked black and grey, while introverts (I) strongly disliked red as well as black and grey. Those who favored colors of closing materials were the sensible types (S) where colors were concentrated in common color groups. • Most residential buildings in Korea are preferred to have maximum interior spaces, rather than consider its original design, overall building performance, and any other aspects since early 1990's. Especially in high-rise apartment buildings, balcony has been merged to living room to get more interior spaces and this renovation trends have been producing deep and narrow shapes of living rooms that was not initially intended by architects. On the other hand, the same gross area of each unit does not necessarily mean same width and depth ratio of each residential unit. Generally, we can categorize it to the deep or wide unit based on its width and depth ratio. Under these circumstances, this study analyzes the room usage pattern changes based on the space width and depth ratio and the effect of expansion of room space to the balcony. This study also includes about 180 apartments plan case studies to find out the relationships among w/d ratio changes, furniture arrangement types, and room configurations. In this research, general apartment room w/d ratios are 0.97 ∼ 1.23; 0.7(south facing sitting room), 1.23(south facing bed room), and 0.95(north facing bedroom). But, after expanding room space to balcony w/d ratio increased as follows; sitting room become 1.31, general south facing bedroom become 1.23, and north facing bedroom become 1.45. In addition to user preference of w/d ratio, many people prefer rectangular room shape a little(w/d ratio is 0.9 or 1.2) than square style (w/d ratio is 1.0) or very deep room style (w/d ratio Is more over 1.5). Accordingly, expanding the room space to balcony may make unsatisfactory room w/d ratio. Expanding room space to balcony should be considered by existing room w/d ratio.

  • Korean traditionally prefer a house with a southern exposure to other styles. Moreover, pretty part of dwelling style in Korea is apartment building. But generally, there are much more north oriented rooms than opposite one in apartment. Generally, most Korean tends to consider the direction of the room as an important factor to decide the arrangement of their furniture. Also, the location of window, door, bed, and closet can affect on the decision-making process of furniture layout. So, the closet position should be determined by not only window direction and door position, but also the furniture arrangement preference of residents. After considering the window and door position, there are 16 alternatives in a room. (Multiplied 4 window directions by 4 door positions under the assumption that the window and the door cannot be on the same side of the wall.) Also, this study analyzed each room style ratio considering the symmetry of each plan by comparing the apartment building plan. This paper studied the bedroom style by analyzing the 180 apartment building plans and survey of furniture layout; the furniture in this study represents bed and desk those are mainly laid in Korean bedroom. Finally, this paper suggested the methodology to find optimal alternatives of furniture and closet layout for high-rise apartment residents, based on the door and window position, and the furniture layout preference of residents.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the actual usefulness and consciousness of bathrooms and to clarify the preference of bathroom plans by apartments dwellers in Jeonju City. Data was collected through self-administered questionnaires and 343 apartments dwellers were used for this study. The major results are as follows. The bathroom types were mostly unit bathrooms and were not suited with using bathrooms of apartments dwellers. The unit type of bathroom was not comfortable for them and most of them were not satisfied with their bathrooms. They usually used family bathroom instead of private bathroom. They wanted a separate space for different facilities such as a bathtub and toilet, a dressing room, and a fixed clothes chest. Generally apartments dwellers did not prefer unit bathrooms, prefering instead the bathroom plan with separate rooms for the bathroom and toilet, with space for dressing. This study suggests that further studies be conducted on apartments dwellers in other big, small and medium-sized cities. Also, it is necessary to offer bathroom plans which take the size of houses and bathrooms, and the number of bathrooms into account and to survey housing consumers' satisfaction of those bathroom plans.
