  • Characteristics of chemistry education during the enlightenment period in Korea are examined by analyzing chemistry textbooks used in the period. Specifically, the analysis is made from the aspects of science, students and teachers. As a result it is found that; first, scientific knowledge itself is emphasized, contrary to those described in the curriculum of chemistry used in the period, and it consists of introduction, non-metals, metals and organic chemistry in chemistry textbook, second, the level of chemistry is similar with that in present high schools, and its technical constitution might have been difficult for a student to study with an experiment, third, terminology lacks consistency and some textbooks include contents of other subject. It is therefore believed that the chemistry textbooks of the enlightenment period is scientifically incomplete and would not have been easy for the teachers to use them to teach the students. In addition, considering the students as a beginner of modern sciences, study level could have been too difficult for them to follow. In conclusion, it appears that chemistry education during the enlightenment period in Korea was not so successful.

Effect of Gibberellin Biosynthesis Inhibitor Ancymidol on Growth, Floral Initiation and Endogenous GA levels in Sorghum bicolor (수수의 생육과 개화 및 내생 GA 함량에 미치는 지벨렐린 생합성억제제 Ancymidol의 영향)

  • This study was conducted to correlate changes in plant growth and flowering behavior with inhibition of gibberellin synthesis following application of GA biosynthesis inhibitor. Two sorghum genotypes, wild-type and phyB-1(phytochrome B mutant) which grow fast and flowers early relative to the wild-type, were used. Both growth and floral initiation of these two genotypes were greatly affected by ancymidol concentration increased. However, these growth inhibition and delayed flowering are almost completely overcome by simultaneous applications of 31.6ppm $GA_3$. The ability of $GA_3$ to reverse the effect of the inhibition on both growth and floral initiation in sorghum suggests a role for native GAs in sorghum flowering. This result was contrast to the fact that in some long day plants GA biosynthesis inhibitors will inhibit shoot elongation but not floral initiation. In sorghum, inhibition of vegetative growth by GA biosynthesis inhibitor is accompanied by a delay in flowering. Ten ppm of ancymidol treatments drastically reduced all early-13-hydroxylation pathway GAs($GA_{12}$, $GA_{53}$, $GA_{19}$, $GA_{20}$, $GA_3$, and $GA_8$) levels.

  • The studies were intended to clarify the effects of selection in sesame breeding. The 82 cultivars of sesame were used as the materials, and 14 quantitative characters were measured on individual plant basis. Selection indexes and genetic advances were calculated by Robinson's methods. In genetic advance values, combinations of days to flowering + number of capsule per plant, days to flowering + length of stem with capsule + number of capsule per plant and days to flowering + number of nodes with capsule were higher than those of other combinations. The highest genetic advance was the combination of all characters, but unreasonable problems such as the expence, time and labor involved in calculating the selection index are remained. For these reasons, it was realized that the selection index for selection should calculated on the basis of the data of 2-3 useful characters, i.e., days to flowering, length of stem with capsule and number of capsule per plant.

  • These experiments were conducted to investigate the effect of day length on some chracteristics and seed weight in the soybean cultivars. Those were classified into three type's of seed weight with delaying seeding date in the previous paper. Flowering was delayed as the longer day length was employed. When the length became longer. the number of leaves at flowering greatly length of main stem and the number of nodes at maturity greatly increased. The seed weight decreased when the day length was longer than 14 hours. Negative correlation was obtained between seed weight and day length. There was negative correlation between seed weight and the number of days required to flowering, and length of main stem and the number of nodes at maturity. Type I cultivars decreased in seed weight when the day length was longer than 16 hours, but this trend was found to be clear with type II cultivars. Type III cultivars decreased in seed weight with increasing the day length.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the optimum temperature after BA treatments for the indution of flowering in Cymbidium ensifolium 'Tekkotsusosin'. Flowering rate was 90% at $30/25^{\circ}C$ (day/night), 50% at $25/20^{\circ}C$ and the natural condition as control, and non flowering at $20/15^{\circ}C$. Malformation rate of flower shape was at $25/20^{\circ}C$, 4% at $30/25^{\circ}C$, and 9% in the natural condition. The length and number of flowering stalks per plant were most at $30/25^{\circ}C$ treatment. After BA spraying, the lowest air temperature for flowering was assumed to be about $20^{\circ}C$.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of ethephon, paclobutrazol, and uniconazole on the flowering of potted Yarrow (Archillea millefolium). Each plant growth regulator was sprayed two times before stem elongation period of yarrow. The tallest was 45.7 cm at $1000mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ ethephon and the shortest was 11.1 cm at 20 uniconazole. Uniconazole delayed flowering and decreased the number of flowers. Both uniconazole at 20 ppm and paclobutrazol at 200 ppm decreased the number of florets to 90.0% and 43.6% of control, respectively. In ethephon, number of florets was increased 34.1% compared with control. In addition, ethephon and paclobutrazol increased the number of mean auxillaly flowers to 28.6% and 23.5% of control, respectively. On the other hand, uniconazole decrease the number of auxillary flowers to 55.3%. Thus, paclobutrazol was recommended as a suitable plant growth regulator for yarrow pot plant production.

  • The study is aimed to obtain the basic data for developing new variations of wild spring orchid. The results was investigated the capsules' formational characteristics and the germination ratio after having been self-pollinated by dividing the flowering period into the 5 stages into budding time, semi-flowering, full-flowering, 10 days after flowering, and 20 days after flowering. The fruit setting ratio was the highest as 100% in the plant which had been pollinated 20 days after the flowering, while the weight of the capsule was heaviest in the orchid which had been pollinated in semi-flowering period. As the result of investigating the germination ratio by dividing the period into 5 stages, it was the highest in the plant which had been pollinated during the semi-flowering period, and in the result of investigating the germination ratio by dividing the seeds harvesting days into the 3 stages, such as, 150 days, 165 days and 180 days after the pollination, it was highest as 5% in the orchid whose seeds had been harvested 150 days after the pollination. In the result of examining the germination ratio of the seeds treated with NaOCl, the those treated with 2% of NaOCl showed the highest as 67% in the germination ratio.

  • Korean sweetpotato, Ipomoea batatas, varieties were examined for their flowering response as a fundamental research to improve breeding efficiency by hybridization of this crop. Under 10.0~10.5 hours short day condition, self-rooted plants of three varieties such as Shinmi, Hongmi and Hwangmi flowered sparsely or moderately, and those of fourteen varieties including Eunmi flowered very sparsely. Under 10.6~12.0 hours day length condition, self-rooted plants of three varieties such as Shinmi, Hongmi and Hwangmi flowered very sparsely. Under the day length longer than 12 hours, none of the tested plants flowered. In all the sweetpotato plants grafted on morning glory, flowering occurred with varying degrees by varieties and day lengths. Under 10.0~10.5 hours day length, thirty two varieties including Hongmi flowered moderately or profusely, and one variety such as Mokgye 1 flowered sparsely. Under 10.6~12 hours day length, twenty three varieties including Sinchunmi flowered moderately or profusely, nine varieties including Jeungmi flowered sparsely, and Mokgye 1 didn't flower at all.
