One of the essential factors for successful college mathematics class is to provide a strong motivation for learning to students. In this respect, this paper attempted to find out how the letter-writing assignment can change students' learning attitude and enhance their motivation for further mathematical investigation. The process is to have all students write up letters containing a summary of the major points covered during the semester, and to find out how valuable is the letter-writing assignment. The major finding of this research is that the letter-writing assignment makes a notable contribution to the desirable change of students' learning attitude. From this finding, we suggest that the letter-writing assignment be adopted by more math classes and expect that such expansion of the letter-writing assignment would have a positive influence on the students' learning attitude.
In this work we start from the thesis that Schiller's Aesthetic Letters contains two different doctrines of aesthetic education. When Schiller first raised the need of aesthetic education in his 1793 letters to Friedrich Christian von Augustenburg, he wanted to show that the taste for beauty contributes to morality and emphasized that man could reach pure reason only by way of beauty. When he revised the original letters and published them in 1795, he added some important parts concerning beauty as the condition and idea of humanity and the following arguments about 'aesthetic condition.' These added parts emphasize the harmony of reason and sensibility in beauty and the restoration of totality in 'aesthetic condition.' We examine the meaning and implications of 'aesthetic condition' in comparison with Schiller's 1793 doctrine of 'three-phase development of humanity,' and explain the background of this thought and also how it developed before and after Aesthetic Letters.

The first Protestant medical missionary, Horace Allen, came to Korea in 1884 and built the first western-style hospital, Jaejungwon. John Heron, Oliver Avison and other foreign medical doctors soon followed. They established hospitals and medical schools, and, by treating patients and educating native doctors, they disseminated and developed modern medicine in Korea. At the same time, they wrote letters and reports to their sponsoring agencies, as well as family and friends, thereby leaving a vast body of literature that is scattered all over the world. Since the end of the 19th century, the records left by foreign medical missionaries have been valuable resources for the study of Korean history. While all types of records, such as diaries, memoirs, reports and travel logs, are available, these tend to be exaggerated or unverifiable because they are unilateral records. In contrast, letters can be verified because they are bilateral records between the recipient and the sender, and cannot be modified or altered according to changes in circumstances. Despite the academic value of these materials, however, there have been insufficient efforts to discover or identify these primary data sources, or to systematically organize them for scholars. This paper identified 49 archival collections from 29 institutions in North America. After analyzing their academic value, the paper will explore digital humanities options in utilizing the letters for future scholarship.

Damage on low?rise buildings caused by typhoons and storms is increasing every year. Thus, this study examined the distribution of wind pressure coefficient at each position according to the height of monosloped roof, and measured wind pressure coefficient according to tributary area and compared it with the current wind load standard. We analyzed six areas in order to analyze characteristics at each position of a half span roof, and found that the wind pressure coefficient was around 25% higher at the high comer (HC) than at the low corner (LC). The distribution pattern of peak pressure coefficient at each position was the same as the AIK load standard, but in the results of our experiment, wind pressure was around 40% lower than the load standard at HC and around 37% higher than the load standard at LC.
"Haerincheokso" is a collection of 279 letters, including the last one Gong Heon-gyeong sent to Lee Sang-jeok in 1865, which were sent by 61 people from 1830. This study examined the career and activities of each of the 61 senders based on their personal details. First, it was found that the senders had special relationships with Lee Sang-jeok. One of them, for example, published "Eunsongdangjip", a collection of poems written by Lee Sang-jeok. Second, many of the senders were from Jiansu Province, Shanxi Province and Zhejiang Province. Third, more than 50 percent of people Lee Sang-jeok had a friendship with were outstanding intellectuals who were Jinsa or Geoin. Fourth, all of the senders except for a monk and the owner of a ginseng shop did vigorous cultural activities in Yanjing at the time. If the reader read "Haerincheokso" based on information above, he will be able to reduce mistakes of misreading the book. Furthermore, the book offers some materials necessary to grasp the cultural exchanges between Korea and China in the 19th century.
Moon Ik-hwan's prison letters are valuable historical materials managed by the Moon Ik-hwan House of Unification, reflecting an aspect of modern and contemporary South Korea. He wrote these prison letters during a period of approximately 11 years and three months. Today about 800 of them remain and are in an urgent need for measures to ensure their long-term preservation and Use. This study set out to introduce their current state that had been made to the public only in fragments, analyze their characteristics as objects of records management, and propose directions and strategies to provide them as part of online service. For these purposes, the investigator analyzed Moon's personal life and life in prison as the backgrounds of their creation and examined their unique characteristics as prison letters according to the scope and size, recipients, reproduction and circulation process, and the medium of lettercards. Based on these efforts, the study shed new light on the significance of use in private archives and provided a case of online utilization tasks and strategies based on the characteristics of letters as one of the representative types of personal records.
This paper discovers and introduces the collection of letters, "A Collector of Correspondence from Chinese Intellectuals (中朝學士書翰錄)" which was made by Kim Youngjak(1802~1868) who had collected the letters from Chinese intellectuals. "A Collector of Correspondence from Chinese Intellectuals (中朝學士書翰錄)" is a collector which contains handwritten letters to Kim Youngjak from Chinese people such as cheng gong shou(程恭壽), weng xue han(翁學涵), zhang bing yan(張丙炎), shao yan han(少言翰), and li wen yuan(李文源). Kim Youngjak had frequent meetings with Chinese intellectuals not only directly but also indirectly. He had exchanged letters with li bo heng(李伯衡), shuai fang wei(帥方蔚) for 30 years. In 1858, he went to Beijing and met Chinese intellectuals ye ming li(葉名澧), zhang bing yan(張丙炎), wu kun tian(吳昆田), cheng gong shou(程恭壽), and zhao guang(趙光). After coming back to Chos?n, he continued to exchange letters with them. "A Collector of Correspondence from Chinese Intellectuals (中朝學士書翰錄)" contains autograph letters by Kim Youngjak and Chinese intellectuals. It has ten letters for Kim Youngjak written by cheng gong shou(程恭壽), weng xue han(翁學涵), zhang bing yan(張丙炎), shao yan han(少言翰) and so on. One letter and five poems which zhao ting huang(趙廷璜) wrote to the son of Kim are also contained. The letters by zhao ting huang(趙廷璜) shows a sincere friendship with Kim Youngjak. The relationship between li bo heng(李伯衡) (who had exchanged letters with Kim for 30 years) and his son li wen yuan(李文源) proves that the cultural interchange between Korea and China had lasted successively. Kim Youngjak has not been widely known in academic circles yet but should not be ignored for the study in the cultural interchange between Korea and China. He proposed to have a relationship with li bo heng(李伯衡) and shuai fang wei(帥方蔚) first and they sent back positively. Therefore, they had a literal and private relationship by only exchanging letters each other. Also considering the fact that Kim Youngjak, as a man of high birth, had a close relationship with Chinese intelletuals, we can notice that Chinese and Korean intellectuals had open minds based on sincerity and trust. This was possible because many intellectuals before him like Hong Daeyong made a basis of the tradition of companionship. At this point, the relationship between Kim Youngjak and Chinese intellectuals and "A Collector of Correspondence from Chinese Intellectuals (中朝學士書翰錄)" have an important value. The collections of Kim Youngjak's works contain only several letters and poems which he sent to Chinese intellectuals. Accordingly, the letters in "A Collector of Correspondence from Chinese Intellectuals (中朝學士書翰錄)" are important to understand the aspects of their interchange.
