  • Computed tomographic scan as a screening procedures in asymptomatic individuals has seen a steady increase with the introduction of multiple-raw detector CT scanners. This report provides a brief review of the current controversy surrounding CT cancer screening, with a focus on the radiation induced cancer risks and clinical efficacy. 1. A large study of patients at high risk of lung cancer(the National Lung Screening Trial[NLST]) showed that CT screening reduced cancer deaths by 20%(1.33% in those screened compared with 1.67% in those not screened). The rate of positive screening tests was 24.2% and 96.4% of the positive screening results in the low-dose CT group were false-positive. Radiation induced lung cancer risk was estimated the most important in screening population because ERR of radiation induced lung cancer does not show the decrease with increasing age and synergistic connection between smoking and radiation risk. Therefore, the radiation risk may be on the same order of magnitude as the benefit observed in the NLST. Optimal screening strategy remain uncertain, CT lung cancer screening is not yet ready for implementation. 2. Computed tomographic colonography is as good as colonoscopy for detecting colon cancer and is almost as good as colonoscopy for detecting advanced adenomas, but significantly less sensitive and specific for smaller lesions and disadvantageous for subsequent therapeutic optical colonoscopy if polyps are detected. The average effective dose from CT colonography was estimated 8-10 $mS{\nu}$, which could be a significant dose if administered routinely within the population over many years. CT colonography should a) achieve at least 90% sensitivity and specificity in the size category from 6 and 10 mm, b) offer non-cathartic bowl preparation and c) be optimized and standardized CT parameters if it is to be used for mass screening. 3. There is little evidence that demonstrates, for whole-body scanning, the benefit outweighs the detriment. This test found large portion of patient(86~90.8%) had at least one abnormal finding, whereas only 2% were estimated to have clinically significant disease. Annual scans from ages 45 to 75 years would accrue an estimated lifetime cancer mortality risk of 1.9%. There is no group within the medical community that recommends whole-body CT. No good studies indicate the accuracy of screening CT, at this time. The benefit/risk balance for any of the commonly suggested CT screening techniques has yet to be established. These areas need further research. Therefore wild screening should be avoided.

  • With the advent of the digital broadcasting, the audiences can access a large number of TV programs and their information through the multiple channels on various media devices. The access to a large number of TV programs can support a user for many chances with which he/she can sort and select the best one of them. However, the information overload on the user inevitably requires much effort with a lot of patience for finding his/her favorite programs. Therefore, it is useful to provide the persona1ized broadcasting service which assists the user to automatically find his/her favorite programs. As the growing requirements of the TV personalization, we introduce our automatic user preference learning algorithm which 1) analyzes a user's usage history on TV program contents: 2) extracts the user's watching pattern depending on a specific time and day and shows our automatic TV program recommendation system using MPEG-7 MDS (Multimedia Description Scheme: ISO/IEC 15938-5) and 3) automatically calculates the user's preference. For our experimental results, we have used TV audiences' watching history with the ages, genders and viewing times obtained from AC Nielson Korea. From our experimental results, we observed that our proposed algorithm of the automatic user preference learning algorithm based on the Bayesian network can effectively learn the user's preferences accordingly during the course of TV watching periods.

  • An experimental study was performed to investigate. The subjects drank (0.5g/kg ethanol and performed 7 items of SPES(simple reaction time, color word stress, digit classification, finger tapping speed, numerical ability, symbol digit coding, memory digit span). 20 students of medical college participated in the study during August, 1996. After ethanol intake, performance of 4 items(simple reaction time, digit classification, finger tapping speed, symbol digit coding) significantly showed to be decreased. The function of perception-response speed and steady movement were found to be more sensitive to ethanol than that of short-term memory, numerical ability and specification of color. No significant association were found between smoking, alcohol drinking, BMI(body mass index) and the effects of ethanol on neurobehavioral performance.

  • According to statistics, drunk drivers who repeatedly violate the DUI (Driving under influence) regulation have been continuously increased, and now the habitual drunk drivers become a societal problem. Employing a confirmative factorial analysis of structural equation model to analysis psychological characteristics of habitual drunk drivers and also seek countermeasures, this study identify the difference among three different groups of drivers: 1) sober drivers, 2) drivers with a DUI violation record, and 3) drivers with more than two records. The results of this study are as follows: First, remedies and educational contents to rectify drunk drivers can be differentiated according to their drunk driving records. Second, using defense mechanism (e.g., rationalization, projection, sublimation), drunk driving psychology (such e.g., sense of guilt, shame, embarrassment) and self-esteem (e.g., affirmation, denial) as theory variables, a Structural Equation is constructed to represent Psychological Characteristics of drunk driving according to records on drunk driving. Third, as a result of analysis of the Psychological Characteristics Model, measures for prevention and reduction of drunk driving suitable for the characteristics of respective group are also suggested. Forth, drunk driving measures based on drinking individuality are complemented by concurrence analysis on records of drunk driving records and National Alcoholism Screening Test (NAST) score. Also, two or more times recorded drunk drivers are classified as inveterate drunk drivers.

  • The digital data were obtained using Kennedy 9000 magnetic tape deck which was connected to the SMS960 side scan sonar during the field operations. The data of three consecutive survey tracks near Seongsan-po, Cheju were used for the development of this study. The softwares were mainly written in Fortran-77 using VAX 11/780 MINI-COMPUTER (CPU Memory; 4MB). The established mapping system consists of the pretreatment and the digital processing of seafloor image data. The pretreatment was necessary because the raw digital data format of the field magnetic tapes was not compatible to the VAX system. Therefore the raw data were read by the personal computer using the Assembler language and the data format was converted to IBM compatible, and next data were communicated to the VAX system. The digital processing includes geometrical correction for slant range, statistical analysis and cartography of the seafloor image. The sound speed in the water column was assumed 1,500 m/sec for the slant range correction and the moving average method was used for the signal trace smoothing. Histograms and cumulative curves were established for the statistical analysis, that was purposed to classify the backscattering strength from the sea-bottom. The seafloor image was displayed on the color screen of the TEKTRONIX 4113B terminal. According to the brief interpretation of the result image map, rocky and sedimentary bottoms were very well discriminated. Also it was shown that the backscattered acoustic pressurecorrelateswith the grain size and sorting of surface sediments.

  • Mobile content adaptation is a technology of effectively representing the contents originally built for the desktop PC on wireless mobile devices. Previous approaches for Web content adaptation are mostly device-dependent. Also, the content transformation to suit to a smaller device is done manually. Furthermore, the same contents are provided to different users regardless of their individual preferences. As a result, the user has difficulty in selecting relevant information from a heavy volume of contents since the context information related to the content is not provided. To resolve these problems, this paper proposes an enhanced method of Web content adaptation for mobile devices. In our system, the process of Web content adaptation consists of 4 stages including block filtering, block title extraction, block content summarization, and personalization through learning. Learning is initiated when the user selects the full content menu from the content summary page. As a result of learning, personalization is realized by showing the information for the relevant block at the top of the content list. A series of experiments are performed to evaluate the content adaptation for a number of Web sites including online newspapers. The results of evaluation are satisfactory, both in block filtering accuracy and in user satisfaction by personalization.

  • This research investigated the sensory processing ability and selected subjects who had sensory processing problems, and divided the subjects into an experimental group and control group. The experimental group was educated with sensory processing intervention on the activities of daily living to determine its influence on the quality of life. The study was based on 230 university students with similar majors in 3 universities of Chungcheong area in the beginning of May, 2013. From here, 32 subjects who had issues with their sensory processing ability were selected. The 230 students were given a survey on the quality of life, individual characteristics, and sensory processing ability. Later, the 32 subjects who had problems with their sensory processing ability were divided into an experimental group and control group. The control group performed sensory processing intervention, whereas the control group did not. After the sensory processing intervention method for 6 weeks, the quality of life was re-evaluated. As a result, the total score of the quality of life after intervention was 98.69 in the experimental group and 84.81 in the control group (p=0.001). The physical score was 16.43 in the experimental group and 14.64 in the control group (p=0.008). The psychological score was 14.71 in the experimental group and 11.75 in the control group (p<0.001). The social score was 14.67 in the experimental group and 13.17 in the control group (p=0.032). The environment score was 14.66 in the experimental group and 12.34 in the control group (p=0.006). The experimental group showed a significant increase in all areas of the quality of life, whereas the control group did not. Through this result, it can be seen that a sensory processing intervention method in daily life can increase the quality of life for subjects with problems in sensory processing ability. Overall, it will be necessary to apply a treatment of various sensory intervention programs for adults and promote a better quality of life.

  • Radio, the first broadcasting medium in history, is also the first mobile medium that meets the currently mobile ecology based on mobile communications network. As a result, it is easily approachable to consumers, can easily engage individual consumers, and its program contents have a huge appealing power to individual listeners, allowing it to form intimacy with audiences at the closest distance. However, the listening rating of radio has decreased greatly because it has experienced various changes by many other competitive media such as TV and internet and it has been influenced by relative constant hypothesis. Also, radio now faces a bigger competition due to the emergence of smartphone. In this circumstance, radio showed movements to evolve into a digital radio that presents improved sound, strengthened reception power, and increased number of channels, but it suddenly changed to DMB and portable multimedia DMB is having huge problems in its marketability due to smartphone. Yet, the listening rating of analogue radio broadcasting that remained unchanged was 13.99% in 2014, an increase by 47% from 2011, and the percentage of listeners under the age of 18 increased by 2.4 times from 2011 to 2014, which was a unique and interesting phenomenon. Accordingly, this paper compared the characteristics of internet and radio that have the traits of daily life, information, individuality, participatory, adventurousness, alternative media, expertise, and sound media. The paper then examined the listening method of radio, in which the direct groundwave antenna reception through a vehicular device is the most common form during the use of transportation means. Finally, it sought to investigate the future of radio based on the understanding of the increase in radio listening ratings, especially by comparing it to the characteristics of smart generation that focus on smartphone and the internet The study results demonstrated that entertainment and amusements are attempting at changes while they used to be obtained selectively by the smart generation from fragmentary information. In addition, radio is expected to become an influential medium in the future through its advantages of 'selected information' and reliability. However, considering such possibilities, radio needs to build the expertise and reliability of broadcasting contents much more at the same time as its digitalization, and it will be able to have its own competitiveness by focusing on various experiences and cultural exposures.

  • Purpose: This study was undertaken to revise and update the Nutrition Quotient (NQ) for Korean adults, a tool used to evaluate dietary quality and behavior. Methods: The first 31 items of the measurable food behavior checklist were adopted based on considerations of the previous NQ checklist, recent literature reviews, national nutrition policies, and recommendations. A pilot survey was conducted on 100 adults aged 19 to 64 residing in Seoul and Gyeonggi Province from March to April 2021 using a provisional 26- item checklist. Pilot survey data were analyzed using factor analysis and frequency analysis to determine whether checklist items were well organized and responses to questions were well distributed, respectively. As a result, the number of items on the food behavior checklist was reduced to 23 for the nationwide survey, which was administered to 1,000 adults (470 men and 530 women) aged 19 to 64 from May to August 2021. The construct validity of the developed NQ (NQ-2021) was assessed using confirmatory factor analysis, linear structural relations. Results: Eighteen items in 3 categories, that is, balance (8 items), moderation (6 items), and practice (4 items), were finally included in NQ-2021 food behavior checklist. 'Balance' items addressed the intake frequencies of essential foods, 'moderation' items the frequencies of unhealthy food intakes or behaviors, and 'practice' items addressed eating behaviors. Items and categories were weighted using standardized path coefficients to calculate NQ-2021 scores. Conclusion: The updated NQ-2021 appears to be suitable for easily and quickly assessing the diet qualities and behaviors of Korean adults.
