  • Since microarray data acquire tens of thousands of gene expression values simultaneously, they could be very useful in identifying the phenotypes of diseases. However, the results of analyzing several microarray datasets which were independently carried out with the same biological objectives, could turn out to be different. One of the main reasons is attributable to the limited number of samples involved in one microarry experiment. In order to increase the classification accuracy, it is desirable to augment the sample size by integrating and maximizing the use of independently-conducted microarray datasets. In this paper, we propose a novel two-stage approach which firstly integrates individual microarray datasets to overcome the problem caused by limited number of samples, and identifies informative genes, secondly builds a classifier using only the informative genes. The classifier from large samples by integrating independent microarray datasets achieves high accuracy up to 24.19% increase as against other comparison methods, sensitivity, and specificity on independent test sample dataset.

  • Rock masses include various rock discontinuities such as faults, joints, and bedding planes. These discontinuities appear as complex structures in geometry. In this study, growth patterns of fractures between two stepping shear fracture tips are numerically modeled using PFC2D (Particle Flow Code). The numerical model showed not only incipient growth of fractures at the tips of preexisting fractures but also subsequent growth of the new fractures. It is observed from all of the experiments that the incipient fractures are tensile cracks developed at $30{\sim}57^{\circ}$ to the preexisting fractures and the subsequent growth of these fractures were at low angles to the preexisting fractures this study.

  • Because it is difficult on existing document retrieval systems to visualize the search result, search results show document titles and short summaries of the parts that include the search keywords. If the result list is long, it is difficult to examine all the documents at once and to find a relation among them. This study uses clustering to classify similar documents into groups to make it easy to grasp the relations among the searched documents. Also, this study proposes a two-level visualization algorithm such that, first, the center of clusters is projected to low-dimensional space by using multi-dimensional scaling to help searchers grasp the relation among clusters at a glance, and second, individual documents are drawn in low-dimensional space based on the center of clusters using the orbital model as a basis to easily confirm similarities among individual documents. This study is tested on the benchmark data and the real data, and it shows that it is possible to visualize search results in real time.

  • The stress condition mainly dominates the thermal conductivity of soils whereas governing factors such as unit weight and porosity suggested by empirical correlations are still valid. The 3D thermal network model enables evaluation of the stress-dependent thermal conductivity of particulate materials generated by discrete element method (DEM). The relationship among dominant factors is analyzed based on the coordination number and porosity determined by stress condition and thermal conductivity of pore fluid. Results show that the variation of thermal conductivity is strongly attributed to the enlargement of inter-particle contact area by loading history and pore fluid conductivity. This study highlights that the anisotropic evolution of thermal conductivity depends on the directional load and that the particle-scale mechanism mainly dictates the heat transfer in soils.

  • In September, 2008, the government has amended the National Territory Planning Act" by adding criteria to designate the Impact Fee Zone on the basis of the increase rate of the development permit. Since the permits are issued to scattered parcels on the individual basis, however, it renders significant difficulties in accurately figuring out the finite local areas that exceed such legal criteria. This study, in this context, tries to join the development permit time-series data with the Korea Land Information System (KLIS) so that, with the aid of the landform layer and existing infrastructure layer, it could pinpoint the local area where the development activities are concentrating. Taking a sector in Yangpyong County as the case, the study practically demonstrates as to how the designation process is geospatially processed.

  • Due to industrialization and urbanization, underground metallic utilities with different owners have been rapidly increased and cathodic protection (CP) methods, especially impressed current CP systems, have been widely adopted to protect their utilities from corrosion with expanded recognition of this method. The stray current interference problem as well as the difficulty in spatial security for system installation, however, came to a ramification of which each owner couldn't resolve for himself. In this respect, this paper illustrates a field-diagnosed example for mutual interference due to separately operated CP systems and suggests an alternative method to overcome the interference situation by design and field-assessment of a common anode bed cathodic protection system.

  • A clustering method for temporal data takes a model-based approach. This uses automata based model for each cluster. It is necessary to construct global models for a set of data in order to elicit individual models for the cluster. The preparation for building individual models is completed by determining the number of clusters inherent in the data set. In this paper, BIC(Bayesian Information Criterion) approximation is used to determine the number clusters and confirmed its applicability. A search technique to improve efficiency is also suggested by analyzing the relationship between data size and BIC values. A number of experiments have been performed to check its validity using artificially generated data sets. BIC approximation measure has been confirmed that it suggests best number of clusters through experiments provided that the number of data is relatively large.

  • The purpose of this study is to generate the local level knowledge structure of a single document, similar to end-of-the-book indexes and table of contents of printed material through the use of term clustering and cluster representative term selection. Furthermore, it aims to analyze the functionalities of the knowledge structure. and to confirm the applicability of these methods in user-friend1y information services. The results of the term clustering experiment showed that the performance of the Ward's method was superior to that of the fuzzy K -means clustering method. In the cluster representative term selection experiment, using the highest passage frequency term as the representative yielded the best performance. Finally, the result of user task-based functionality tests illustrate that the automatically generated knowledge structure in this study functions similarly to the local level knowledge structure presented In printed material.

  • Object X-ray method commonly used for hole search in overset grids requires huge amount of time due to complicated vector calculations to search the cross-points as well as time-consuming hole search algorithm with respect to background grids. Especially, when the grid system is in motion relative to the background, hole points should be searched at every time step, leading to hung computational burden. To cope with this difficulties, this study presents an efficient hole search algorithm mainly designed to reduce hole searching time. To this end, virtual surface with reduced grid points is suggested and logical operators are employed as a classification algorithm instead of complicated vector calculations. In addition, the searching process is further accelerated by designating hole points in a row rather than discriminating hole points with respect to each background grid points. If there exists a relative motion, the present algorithm requires much less time because only the virtual surface needs to be moved at every time step. The hole searching time has been systematically compared for a few selected geometries.

  • The behavior of the underground opening depends mainly on the magnitude of the initial stress existing before excavation and on the stress redistribution due to the excavation. In the case of elasto-plastic materials such as rock mass, as the structural behavior of surrounded opening due to excavation depends on the stress path, methods and sequence of excavation have influences on the results of numerical analysis. Therefore, in order to design underground openings with large cross-section such as underground nuclear power plants, radioactive waste disposal cavems, oil storage caverns, and so on more reasonably it is desirable to consider the effect of the excavation sequence in the analysis. In this paper, the underground structure is analyzed using the finite element method and the distinct element methods with a view to review the the effect of the excavation sequence. Based on the results of the analysis the followings are discussed : influence of excavation shape and sequence, effect of structural reinforcements, influence of multi caverns.
