  • Recently, as a demand for the portable device is surged, there are needs to develop a new fuel cell system for replacing the conventionally used secondary battery. For this purpose, it becomes important to develop direct formic acid fuel cell (DFAFC) that uses formic acid as a fuel. The formic acid can offer typical advantages such as excellent non-toxicity of the level to be used as food additive, smaller crossover flux through electrolyte, and high reaction capability caused by high theoretical electromotive force (EMF). With the typical merits of formic acid, the efforts for optimizing reaction catalyst and cell design are being made to enhance performance and long term stability of DFAFC. As a result, to date, the DFAFC having the power density of more than $300mW/cm^2$ was developed. In this paper, basic performing theory and configuration of DFAFC are initially introduced and future opportunities of DFAFC including the development of catalyst for the anode electrode and electrolyte, and design for the optimization of cell structure are discussed.

  • For the study of ant fauna in Mt. Kyeryongsan, we selected three areas and collected 317 colonies nine times from 1986 to 1990. The communities of ants were composed of 3 subfamilies, 23 genera and 45 species. Among them, Solenopsis sp. was an unrecorded species in Korea. The number of ant species distributed in each area was almost the same, and the species distributed uniformly in the nine subareas were Paratrechina flavipes and Aphaenogaster japonica. The number of species collected in the only one subarea were ten, and six among them were collected in the area of Sinwonsa temple, the westward slope. It is remarkable that Camponotus tokioensis, which is known to be distributed only in the island and coast so far, is found to be distributed in the area of Sinwonsa temple as well.

[J. • The 21 species, 9 genera, and 2 subfamilies collected at Orimok area were added to the ant fauna list of Mt. Hallasan, among which, Camponotus amamianus Terayama is new to the fauna of Korea, and Lasius hayashi, L. umbratus, Myrmica kasczenkoi, and M. kurokii are newly added to the fauna list of Jeju Island. In addition, the catalog has been arranged by adding the formerly collected ant specimens at Mt. Hallasan.

  • This study was conducted to suggest effective storage methods for the use spent mushroom (Flammulina velutipes) substrates (SMS) as animal feed. SMS was storage by deep stacking, composting and vinyl mulching after treated with 1% microbes and 0.5% formic acid. During the storage periods, all of the treatment was covered with hyphae of mushroom. The external change of SMS was shown that the storage of SMS can be improved by anaerobic condition and 1% microbial treatment. The comparatively high temperature, pH and total bacterial number was shown in the SMS treated without microbes and formic acid by composting.

  • This study investigated the effects of silage additives on rumen fermentation characteristics of rye silage. Rye was harvested at ripening stage and treated with different additives in quadruplicate following: without additive (control), with either lactic acid bacteria inoculant (LAB), formic acid (FA), or Ca-formate (Ca-FA). Overall, ensiling characteristics of FA and Ca-FA silages contained 4-fold more (P<0.05) butyrate and 2-fold more (P<0.05) NH3-N concentration (% total nitrogen) than those of control and LAB silages. Cows fed LAB silage showed a diurnal trend with the highest values of propionate concentration compared to the control at 1, 2 and 3 hr after feeding. In contrast, FA and Ca-FA silages increased the proportion of butyrate significantly (P<0.05) at all sampling times compared to control and LAB silage. In conclusion, Forage rye treated with FA or Ca-FA showed different fermentation characteristics during ensilage and in the rumen compared to LAB silage. Further studies are needed to evaluate whether different fermentation characteristics in the rumen between LAB and FA silages had effect on partitioning of nutrients between milk production and body tissue.

  • A total of 12 species in six genera of the poneromorph subfamilies group in Korea was reviewed. All investigated specimens are classified into three subfamilies; Amblyoponinae, Proceratinae and Ponerinae. Totally six genera were known and Cryptopone, Hypoponera, Pachycondyla and Ponera belong to the subfamily Ponerinae and Amblyopone and Proceratium belongs to the subfamily Amblyoponinae and Proceratinae respectively. In this study, keys to the all known genera and species of the subfamilies in Korea are presented. A synonymic list, description of a worker and comments on each species are given with SEM photographs of worker.

  • Recently, the use of formic acid as a fuel for direct liquid fuel cells has emerged as a promising alternative to methanol. In the work presented herein, we evaluated direct formic acid fuel cells(DFAFCs) with various components under operating conditions, for example, the thickness of the proton exchange membrane, concentration of formic acid, gas diffusion layer, and commercial catalyst. The thickness of the proton exchange membrane influenced performance related to the fuel cross-over. To optimize the cell performance, we investigated on the proper concentration of formic acid and catalyst for the formic acid oxidation. Consequently, membrance-electrode assembly(MEA) consisted of $Nafion^{(R)}$-115 and the Pt-Ru black as a anode catalyst showed the maximum performance. This performance was superior to the DMFCs' one.
