  • By the combined use of reduced integration and addition of nonconforming displacement modes, a highly effective new plate element has been established. The displacement field of this element was formed by adding nonconforming modes only to transverse displacement component of Ahmad-Irons' element and the element matrices are computed by the numerical integrations with modified orders. Comparing with other elements, the superiority of the both NC 8-4.1 and NC 8-5.1 elements over the elements previously studied has been observed. The solutions with these elements converge to the true solutions very rapidly as the mesh is refined. These elements are also shown to be applicable to the wide range of thick and very thin plate problems.

  • This paper presents the theoretical natural frequencies of out-of-plane deformable ring based on the variables such as out-of-plane deflection, torsional rotation and shear rotation. Based on the same variables, a finite element eigen analysis is carried out by using the $C^0$-continuous, isoparametric element which has three nodes per element and three degrees-of-freedom at each node. Numerical experiments are peformed to find the integration scheme which produces accurate natural frequencies, natural modes and correct rigid body motion. The uniformly reduced integration and the selective reduced integration give more accurate numerical frequencies than the uniformly full integration, but the uniformly reduced integration produces incorrect rigid body motion while selective reduced integration does correct one. Therefore, the ring element based on the three variables which employes selective reduced integration is recommended to avoid spurious modes, to alleviate the error due to shear locking and to produce correct rigid body motion, simultaneously.

  • A modified 16-node element for composite plate has been proposed and compared with the 20-node element to check the validity of it. The fields of numerical inspection include mode analysis and specific damping analysis. By symetrizing the conventional unsymmetric damping matrix in the analysis of specific damping capacity, we could compute the specific damping capacity and make a program, effectively. In addition, we could predict the errors caused by reduction of integration order in thickness direction depending upon the number of layers.

  • A higher order plate bending finite element using cubic in-plane displacement profiles is proposed for geometrically nonlinear analysis of thin and thick plates. The higher order plate bending element has been derived from the three dimensional plate-like continuum by discretization of the equations of motion by Galerkin weighted residual method, together with enforcing higher order plate assumptions. Total Lagrangian formulation has been used for geometrically nonlinear analysis of plates and consistent linearization by Newton-Raphson method has been performed to solve the nonlinear equations. The element characteristics have been computed by, selective reduced integration technique using Gauss quadrature to avoid shear locking phenomenon in case of extremely thin plates. Several numerical examples were solved with FEAP macro program to demonstrate versatility and accuracy of the present higher order plate bending element.

  • For non-linear analysis of stiffened shell structures, the total Lagrangian formulation is presented based upon the degenerated shell element. Geometrically correct formulation is developed by updating the direction of normal vectors and taking into account second order rotational terms in the incremental displacement field. Assumed strain concept is adopted in order to overcome shear locking phenomena and to eliminate spurious zero energy mode. The post-buckling behaviors of stiffened shell structures are traced by modeling the stiffener as a shell element and considering general transformation between the main structure and the stiffener at the connection node. Numerical examples to demonstrate the accuracy and the effectiveness of the proposed shell element are presented and compared with references' results.

  • In this paper, behavior of rectangular storage structures under earthquake loadings are investigated. Linear sloshing is assumed in this study. The effect of the wall flexibility is considered. Eulerian and lagrangian approaches are presented. The Eulerian approach is carried out by solving the boundary value problem for the fluid motion. In the lagrangian approach, the fluid as well as the storage structure is modelled by the finite element method. The fluid region is discretized by using fluid elements. The (1 $\times$ 1)-reduced integration is carried out for constructing the stiffness matrices of the fluid elements. Seismic analysis of the coupled system is carried out by the response spectra method. The numerical results show that the fluid forces on the wall obtained by two approaches are in good agreements. By including the effect of the wall flexibility, the forces due to fluid motion can be increased very significantly.

  • A formulation of an isoparametric quadrilateral higher-order plate bending finite element is presented. The 8-noded 28-d.o.f. plate element has been degenerated from the three-dimensional continuum by introducing the plate assumptions and considering higher-order in-plane displacement profile. The element characteristics have been derived by the Galerkin's weighted residual method and computed by using the selective reduced integration technique to avoid shear-locking phenomenon. Several numerical examples are given to demonstrate the accuracy and versatility of the proposed quadrilateral higher-order plate bending element over the other existing plate finite elements in both static and dynamic analyses.

  • A miniature metal bellows is used to minimize the excessive flow of the cryogenic gas in Joule-Thomson micro cryocooler. It is made of metal alloy and its geometry is axisymmetric. The bellows is filled with high pressure gas. It contracts or expands in the axial direction for a wide change of temperature, because the pressure and volume inside the bellows must be satisfied with state equation of the gas. Therefore, in order to design the bellows in Joule-Thomson micro-cryocooler, it is important to evaluate deformation of the bellows under internal pressure exactly. Considering geometric nonlinearity, deformations analysis of the bellows were obtained by a commercial finite element code ANSYS, The bellows was modeled by 3-node axisymmetric shell elements with reduced integration. Experiments were also performed to prove the validity of proposed numerical analysis. The results by numerical analysis and experiments were shown in good agreements.
