  • The purpose of this study is to identify nursing college students' knowledge, awareness and adherence to preventive behavior of blood-borne infection, and the factors affecting the adherence to preventive behavior of blood-borne infection. This study was carried out for 475 juniors in university who have completed clinical practice at the nursing college located in G city from December 1 to 15, 2017. The study findings showed that knowledge score, awareness and adherence to preventive behavior of blood-borne infection were 13.13 points(0-18 points), 4.18 points and 4.34 points, respectively. Nursing college students' adherence to preventive behavior of blood-borne infection showed a positive correlation between knowledge of blood-borne infection and awareness of blood-borne infection, The factors affecting the adherence to preventive behavior of blood-borne infection were found to be age, education experience, exposure, knowledge of blood infection, and the explanatory power of these variables was 16.3%. Therefore, it was found to be necessary to develop and apply a standardized education protocol in ward units for nursing college students to reduce the incidence of exposure to blood-borne infection sources in nursing college students.

Results : The infection prevention knowledge and performance are higher as work experience is more (p<.05), as the education level is higher and when they have undergone in-service education (p<.001). Also these are higher when they are working in the dentist at the present (p<.001). The infection prevention practice are different with respect to ages (p<.01), work experience (p<.001), and the highest level of education (p<.01). There are correlations between the infection control practices and knowledge, performance and knowledge. As the practice level is higher, it is shown that the performance is higher (r=.049, p=.01). Conclusions : It would be necessary to develop the systematic and continuous program in infection control education and to build system which makes in-service training for dental hygienists mandatory. These could improve the level of infection prevention knowledge, practice and performance of dental hygienists to prevent the exposure to infection of the people.

The collected data was analyzed by using the IBM SPSS Statistics 25.0 Program. In the results of analyzing the ranking by converting it into Borich's needs formula and then totaling up the degree of importance and knowledge, it was researched as the 1st place for the transmission path of infectious diseases, the 2nd place for the preventive method of infectious diseases, the 3rd place for the treatment method of infectious diseases, the 4th place for the handling procedure in case an infectious disease was doubted and confirmed, and the 5th place for the major symptoms of infectious diseases. The results of this study could contribute to the improvement of infection preventive practice through the provision of proper information to subjects, by providing the basic data for the development of educational programs for the elderly reflecting the needs of prevention and management of infectious diseases.

  • This study aimed to investigate the medically inclined college students' knowledge, attitude, and compliance on the preventive behaviors of the Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS). A cross-sectional study was conducted on 251 medically inclined college students in Jeonju Kijeon College from June 8 to 13, 2015, using a scale on the knowledge and attitude toward MERS and a structured questionnaire. The t-test, analysis of variance, and Pearson correlation coefficient were used to analyze the data. The participants consisted of 46.6% college students majoring in dental hygiene, 30.7% in clinical pathology, and 22.7% in emergency rescue, and 69.7% of them had been educated on MERS prevention. This study revealed that students who received MERS prevention training (t=3.457, p=0.001) and female students (t=-2.945, p=0.005) had more knowledge on MERS, while students from the dental hygiene department (F=8.048, p<0.001) and those in their third year (F=3.978, p=0.020) showed a more positive attitude toward MERS. Regarding the correlation between knowledge, attitude, fear of infection and compliance on the preventive behaviors, students were more knowledgeable (r=0.133, p=0.036), presented a more positive attitude (r=0.158, p=0.012) and had more fear of infection (r=0.312, p<0.001), were more likely to comply with the preventive measures. For an effective prevention of MERS, a newly found infectious disease, we suggest that medically inclined college students must improve their knowledge of and have a positive attitude toward MERS infection management at a medical institution in compliance with the MERS infection preventive behaviors. Furthermore, this study shows that an infection management education program should be developed, so that which students could learn about the causes, dissemination routes, and preventive methods of infectious diseases, including the newly discovered ones, prior to their clinical training at a medical institution.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate role perception, knowledge, self-confidence of practice, and educational needs of child daycare teachers' infectious disease management and to identify their relationship. A correlation study was conducted. Participants were 180 child daycare teachers. Almost eighty percent(78.9%) of participants did not received infectious disease management education. The mean percent of correct answers for infectious disease management knowledge of participants was 52.3% and their self-confidence of practice of infectious disease management was low. However, their role perception of infectious disease management and educational needs were high. Educational needs on 'hand washing and hygiene to prevent infectious diseases', 'blocking transmission of infectious diseases', 'infectious disease specific management and care', and 'infectious disease specific symptoms' were high. Child daycare teachers' role perception of infectious disease was positively correlated with their knowledge and educational needs. Development and evaluation of educational interventions to improve child daycare teachers' infectious disease prevention and management are recommended. Particularly, efforts are needed to improve child daycare teachers role perceptions as infectious disease manager.
