Study on Vegetations of the Sihwaho Phragmites communis Wetland Park (시화호 갈대습지공원내의 식생조사 연구)

  • The flora of Banwol, Donghwa and Samhwa stream of the Sihwaho Phragmites communis wetland park was listed as 242 taxa; 72 families, 175 genera, 201 species, 38 varieties, 2 forms and 1 cultivar. Among these taxa, there were 92 taxa (38.0%) for the planted species, while 150 taxa (62.0%) for the native species. The halophytes were summarized as 13 taxa (5.4% among total 242 taxa); 5 families, 9 genera, 12 species, 1 variety. The naturalized plants were composed of 17 families, 41 genera, 45 species, 1 variety, totaling 46 taxa and naturalization index, urbanization index were 19.0%, 17.0%, respectively.

Productive Structure and energy Storage of the Delta of Nak Dong River (낙동강 하류 삼각주지역 갈대초지의 생산구조와 에너지저장에 관한 연구)

  • In the grassland ecosystem dominated by Phragmites longivalvis in the delta of Nak Dong River, the production, decomposition, and accumulation of organic were estimated by the theoretical analysis. The amounts of organic carbon and organic matter of litter are $1020.43g/m^2\;and\;591.90g/m^2$, respectively. The amounts of organic matter and organic carbon on the grassland floor is $1154.96g/m^2\;and\;669.93g/m^2$, the ratio of annual litter production 'L' to the amount of accumulation on the top mineral soil (F, H and $A_2$ horizons) provided estimates of decay constant k. Constant k is 0.884 in the Phragmites longivalvis community. The vertical levels of organic matter and organic carbon is the highest in 120-140 cm of photosythetic system and in 0-20 cm of non-photosyntic system.

  • Weed species investigated along the Nakdong River on September, 1989 were 105 species in 29 families. Vegetation analysis along the Nakdong River using a two dimensional ordination diagram showed the existence of six plant community types, namely, Humulus japonicum, Persicaria thunbergii, Artemisia capillaris, Persicaria blumei-Setaria viridis-Digitaria sanguinalis and Phragmites communis. Especially the largest community type, Phragmites communis had dominant weed species such as Humulus japonocum, Arundinella hirta, Persicaria thunbergii, Setaria viridis, Sasola collina and Persicaria perfoliata.

A Study of Pull-out strength increasement by root of grasses (식물뿌리에 의한 인발력 증가에 관한 연구)

  • In this study, a pull-out strength increasement of grasses was tested in field and the relationship between a weight of root and pull-out strength was established. The tested grasses were commmon reed, reed and sedge which were cultivated by mat-type like turf and used for revegetation of bank. The shear stress of soil at a section can be discribed as a function of root area and pull-out strength, therefore the result of this study will be used as a foundational data for reinforcing the shear stress of the revegetated bank. The heavier weight of root increased, the stronger shear stress was for all grasses. But the relationship between the weight and the shear stress were different by a kind of grass. The difference between common reed, sedge and reed is due to difference of growth and propagation. A reed propagates by subterranean stem and a root weight and pull-out strength are linearly increased by root and growth of subterranean stem.

  • Methanolic extract of the common reed sprouts (Phragmites communis Trin.), unincubated or incubated at $27^{\circ}C$ in the dark, was subjected to thin layer chromatography for the indole compounds. Serotonin, tryptophan and tryptamine were the major indoles in the unincubated sprouts. At early stage of incubation of sprouts, however, serotonin and tryptamine decreased while other indoleamines increased. Tryptophan remained constant throughout the incubation periods. From the observation in the present study, it was speculated that serotonin be synthesized from tryptophan via tryptamine and in turn metabolized to bufotenine.

Effect of Plant Growth Regulators on Callus Induction and Plant Regeneration from Seed Culture of Reed (갈대(Phragmites communis Trinius.)의 종자배양에 있어서 식물생장조절물질이 캘러스 유도와 식물체 재분화에 미치는 영향)

  • In order to develop an efficient, reliable and reproducible tissue culture system for reed (Phragmites communis Trinius), an efficient plant regeneration system via callus induction was established using mature seeds as explants. MS medium containing 1 mg/L 2,4-D and 0.5 mg/L BA was optimal for callus induction from mature seeds. The highest frequency (88.7%) of callus formation was obtained in 1.0 mg/L 2,4-D. The highest plant regeneration frequency (59.6%) was found when the embryogenic calli were subcultured on MS medium supplemented with 100 mg/L myo-inositol, whereas, adding of plant growth regulators was not so promising in this case. Our result would be useful for development of transgenic reed plants.

The 2009-based detailed distribution pattern and area of Phragmites communis-dominant and Suaeda japonica-dominant communities on the Suncheon-bay and Beolgyo estuarine wetlands (순천만과 벌교 하구 연안습지의 2009년 기준 갈대 및 칠면초 우세 군집 분포양상과 면적 제시)

  • Halophyte distribution pattern and area in the Suncheon-bay and Beolgyo estuary coastal wetlands were analyzed using KOMPSAT-2 landsat images were taken in 2008 and 2009, and field investigations were fulfilled for confirming the precise boundaries of individual halophyte areas. The salt-marsh vegetation in those areas can be classified mainly into two dominant communities: Suaeda japonica-dominant and Phragmites communis-dominant communities. In order to identify sedimentary characteristics, tidal-flat surface leveling and sedimentary facies analysis had been conducted. The sedimentary facies of marsh area are mostly silty clayey and clay facies with a little seasonal change and its slope is very gentle (0.0007~0.002 in gradient). Phragmites communis and Suaeda japonica communities were distributed in the mud-flat zone between 0.7 m and 1.8 m higher than MSL (mean sea level): zone of 1.1~1.8 m in the former and zone of 0.7~1.3 m in the latter. In the Suncheon-bay estuarine wetland, on the basis of 2009 distribution, Phragmites communis-dominant and Suaeda japonica-dominant communities are about $0.79km^2$ and $0.22km^2$ in distribution area, respectively. On the other hand, Bulgyo estuarine marsh shows that the distribution areas of Phragmites communis-dominant and Suaeda japonica-dominant communities are about $0.31km^2$ and 0.031km2 in distribution area, respectively. Individual 105 and 60 dominant community areas and their distribution patterns can be well defined and indicated in the Suncheon-bay and Bulgyo estuarine marshes, respectively. The distribution pattern and area of hylophyte communities analyzed in this study based on 2008/2009 satellite images would be valuable as a base of future monitoring of salt-marsh related studies in the study area which is the most important salt-marsh research site in Korea.

Dynamics of the Community of Phytoplankton and Periphytic Algae on Reed in the Shihwa Constructed Wetland (시화호 인공습지의 식물 플랑크톤과 갈대 부착조류 군집의 동태)

  • The Shihwa constructed wetland was established for the treatment of severely polluted water from Banwoul, Donghwa and Samhwa streams. This study was focused on investigating dynamics of phytoplankton communities in open waters and periphytic algae on reed (Phragmites communis) planting area at 5 stations from October 2001 to July 2002. The concentration of T-N and T-P of inlet stations from the streams were decreased by flowed through the wetland. However, the TN/TP ratios at all stations were shown as a little over 16 indicating that the T-P will play some role as a limitation factor. Phytoplankton communities were identified as a total 413 taxa which were composed of 375 species, 21 varieties, 2 forma and 15 unidentified species. Standing crops of phytoplankton communities and chlorophyll-a concentrations ranged from $330{\sim}36,420\;cells/mL$ and $2.5{\sim}170.7\;{\mu}g/L$ respectively, and showed the decreasing tendency after flowing through the wetland at almost all stations. Dominant species were 14 taxa at all stations which were Euglena oblonga and Synura spinosa etc. Periphytic algae on the reed were a total 329 taxa which were composed of 295 species, 13 varieties, 3 forma and 17 unidentified species. The species numbers were recorded in order of Chlorophyceae-Bascillariophyceae-Cyanophyceae-Euglenophyceae-Chrysophyceae. The relative abundance (%) was showed a seasonal variation from Cyanophyceae to Bascillariophyceae and to Chlorophyceae. Chlorophyll-a concentrations, ie. the biomass of periphytic algae were ranged from $5.5{\sim}363.8\;mg/m^2$. Dominant species were 16 taxa which were Lyngbya angusta of Cyanophyceae in the early investigation, and were changed to Stigeoclonium lubricum of Chlorophyceae, and Nitzschia plea of Bacillariophyceae etc. in the late. Species number, standing crops and chlorophyll-a concentrations of phytoplankton and perphytic algae were shown higher values at the inlet stations than the stations after flowing through the wetland.
