Teaching methods included case-based debates, discussions, action learning, online learning, and problem-based learning, including traditional lectures. • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify how nursing students' awareness of biomedical ethics and ethical values affect their attitudes towards a do-not-resuscitate (DNR) order. Methods: This cross-sectional correlation study was conducted with 275 nursing students enrolled at two universities in North Chungcheong Province and North Gyeongsang Province of South Korea. Data were collected in April 2017 using a self-reported questionnaire. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient and stepwise multiple regression with the SPSS/WIN 23.0 program. Results: The students' attitudes towards DNR were positively correlated with attitudes that seek ethical values but negatively correlated with their biomedical ethics awareness. The explained variance for attitudes towards DNR was 20%, which was significant (F=13.01, P<0.001). Conclusion: These findings suggest that nursing students' biomedical ethics awareness and ethical values were associated with their attitudes towards DNR. Curriculum organization and various educational programs should be developed and applied to help nursing students develop ethical values and awareness of biomedical ethics.

The survey analysis was done using the SPSS WIN 23.0 program. The participants were interviewed after experiencing the techniques in class and content analysis was used on the answers. As a result of applying visual thinking and window paning, ethical decision-making confidence (t=6.748, p<.001) and nursing professional intuition (t=-3.52, p<.001) showed statistically significant changes. There was, however, no significant change in biomedical ethics consciousness (t=1.291, p=.199). Qualitative analysis found that they had fresh experience, an unfamiliar but comfortable feeling, feeling of being mine, insufficient time, systematic case study approach based on theory, were able to cultivate cooperation and coordination ability through discussion and experience in various professional fields, pride, ethical responsibility consciousness and were able to apply learning content in the field. Visual thinking and window paning foster diverse competencies in nursing education and help integrative learning. Therefore, based on the results it is proposed that visual thinking and window paning are applied to the improvement of instruction in other courses to develop core nursing competency.

  • This study was attempted to identify the current status of education of gerontological nursing at nursing colleges across the country and to check whether 19 senior nursing competencies suggested by the American Association of Nursing Colleges are reflected in the courses. The subjects of this study were 198 nursing education institutions accredited by KABONE, and each university's website, department homepage, university handbook, admission-related information, curriculum table, and syllabus were collected and analyzed through an internet search engine. The collected syllabus and the most recent curriculum table of the elderly nursing course were checked and analyzed using SPSS 23.0. The current status of gerontological nursing management was presented by calculating the frequency and percentage, and the educational contents presented in the syllabus were analyzed based on 19 geriatric nursing competencies presented by AACN. 185 institutions (93.43%) operated the geriatric nursing subjects, 98 institutions (49.49%) offered theory subject, and 84 institutions (42.42%) offered both theory and practice. In the case of compulsory majors, 52.92% had the most, 27.84% for the first semester of the 4th year, and 53.54% for 2 credits. As a result of analyzing the lesson plan, communication-related educational competency was included in 40% of cases. As AACN gerontological nursing competency 'effective information provision ability for the elderly', 'ethical and non-coercive decision-making', 'care without restraint', 'safe and effective transition across levels of care' was not included in the education content. In conclusion, gerontological nursing education has been focused on disease, and effective information provision capabilities including communication with the elderly need to be reflected.

  • This study aimed to find out the learning outcomes of the program belonging to law and ethics, which is the category of the 4th cycle nursing certification evaluation, and to find out the direction of health care laws and regulations belonging to the related category accordingly. In the 4th cycle, 4 sub-competences were presented, and "learning outcomes are to practice nursing in accordance with law and ethics". Planning is recommended. In particular, health care laws and regulations are an important subject in the national examination for nurses, and the number of students who failed in the recent national examination for nurses was 1st to 2nd. However, if these subjects are recognized only as memorization-oriented national tests, the learning outcomes of the Nursing Education Accreditation and Evaluation Institute cannot be achieved. In particular, with the demand for high-level nursing care as a nurse and the expansion of work, related responsibilities and duties are increasing, so it is necessary to recognize the importance of achieving learning outcomes for health care laws and regulations and to make efforts to link learning outcomes.

  • This study was undertaken to identify nursing professionalism perceptions among nursing students who had completed a semester of simulation-based education, and to provide the basis for presenting direction of the simulation curriculum that helps in the emergence of a positive nursing professional in future. Data obtained from focus group interviews of study participants determined 17 semantic categories and 6 themes through the process of identifying, comparing, and categorizing meaningful concepts. The perception of nursing students regarding the profession after simulation-based education include 'realization of professionalism', 'ethics and emotions as professional human subjects', 'cultivation of communication skills', 'integrative thinking for problem solving', and 'foundation', and also the importance of a 'foundational knowledge body' and 'reflection of self-capacity'. The results of this study reflect on 5 intuitional areas of a nursing professional: professional self-concept, social awareness, nursing expertise, nursing room role, and independence of nursing. The results of this study indicate that in order to enable nursing students to experience nursing professional intuition through simulation-based hands-on training, it is necessary to actively revise and apply courses for the development of a positive nursing professional intuition through simulation education.
