  • According to International Associating for the Study of Pain (IASP) definition, neuropathic pain is a disorder characterized by dysfunction of the nervous system that, under normal conditions, mediates virulent information to the central nervous system (CNS). This pain can be divided into a disease with provable lesions in the peripheral or central nervous system and states with an incorporeal lesion of any nerves. Both conditions undergo long-term and chronic processes of change, which can eventually develop into chronic pain syndrome, that is, nervous system is inappropriately adapted and difficult to heal. However, the treatment of neuropathic pain itself is incurable from diagnosis to treatment process, and there is still a lack of notable solutions. Recently, several studies have observed the responses of CNS to harmful stimuli using image analysis technologies, such as functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), positron emission tomography (PET), and optical imaging. These techniques have confirmed that the change in synaptic-plasticity was generated in brain regions which perceive and handle pain information. Furthermore, these techniques helped in understanding the interaction of learning mechanisms and chronic pain, including neuropathic pain. The study aims to describe recent findings that revealed the mechanisms of pathological pain and the structural and functional changes in the brain. Reflecting on the definition of chronic pain and inspecting the latest reports will help develop approaches to alleviate pain.

  • This study was conducted to provide basic data to establish health promotion and chronic disease management education programs and educational plans for well-aging by investigating the educational needs for health promotion and chronic disease management by life cycle. This is a descriptive correlation research study, and collected and analyzed through a structured questionnaire targeting 330 adults over 19 years of age registered at Gallup Korea. The results of the study were perceived health status 3.11 points (SD=.72), health promotion behavior 2.27 points (SD=.47), and health-related quality of life 0.92 points (SD=.10). Health-related quality of life was found to have a positive correlation with perceived health status (r=.472, p<.001) and health promotion behavior (r=.122, p<.026). The priority of educational needs and contents for health promotion and chronic disease management was the highest in chronic disease management. There was a significant difference according to the life cycle (p=0.001), and it was found that the mature stage was more likely to be aware of the level of knowledge, the need for education, and the willingness to participate in education compared to the youth. Through the results of this study, it is necessary to develop a comprehensive customized program that is subdivided according to the life cycle when developing health promotion and chronic disease management education programs for well-aging.

  • The development of information and communication technologies (ICT) and changes in medical services centering on daily life have ushered in an era of self-management through the smartphone health management app (mHealth). This study identified the factors affecting mHealth use among older adults with diabetes. A structured survey was conducted using online and offline channels for 252 older adults who were over 65 and had diabetes. The collected data were subjected to hierarchical multiple regression analyses, and subjective health status, e-health literacy, and interaction terms of social support were inputted to verify moderating effect. The main results of this study are as follows. First, mHealth use among older adults with diabetes was higher in the male, type 2 diabetes, and younger age groups. Second, the higher was the e-health literacy, the higher was the mHealth use. Third, a negative moderating effect of social support was found in the relationship between subjective health status and mHealth use. We expect this study to provide researchers and managers interested in mHealth and older adults with diabetes, with valuable theoretical and practical implications. Furthermore, this study contributes to improving mHealth use among older adults with diabetes and building a digitally inclusive society.

  • Background: The importance of care and healthcare services for the elderly is growing due to the rapid aging of the population and changes in household types. In Korea, the Long-Term Care Insurance System was implemented in 2008, providing a universal system of public care services. However, the needs of the elderly for care and healthcare services are still not being fully met. Care and healthcare services are essential for the quality of life and survival of the elderly, making research in this area crucial. Therefore, this study aims to identify the association between the care provided to individuals aged 65 and older and their unmet healthcare needs. Methods: Based on the analysis of the National Survey of Older Koreans 2020, the final study population consisted of 9,920 elderly individuals aged 65 and over, after excluding 177 proxy respondents from an initial total of 10,097 participants. The dependent variable in this study is the experience of unmet healthcare needs, while the main variable of interest is care. The control variables include demographic characteristics, health behaviors, and health status. And technical analysis, univariate analysis using the Rao-Scott chi-square test, and survey logistic regression analysis were conducted after adjusting for various confounding variables. Results: The study found that 252 people (2.5%) of all the elderly had unmet healthcare need. In the adjusted model accounting for all variables, the odds ratio for experiencing unmet healthcare needs was 2.76 (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.60-4.78) for the private care group and 5.84 (95% CI, 2.65-12.89) for the public care group, compared to the group with no functional limitations. There was no significant difference in unmet healthcare experiences between the group receiving mixed care (private and public care) and the group in need of assistance but not receiving care. Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that unmet healthcare needs occur among both elderly individuals receiving public and private care, highlighting a lack of proper integration between care and healthcare services. In Korea, elderly care and healthcare are often operated in a fragmented manner, focusing on supply rather than demand. It is hoped that the findings of this study will serve as a foundational resource for improving integrated elderly health policies that connect care and healthcare services.
