This paper was aimed to investigate disaster experience, perception and core competencies on disaster nursing of nursing students and to provide basic data needed for development of disaster nursing program. 172 nursing students enrolled in a department of nursing completed questionnaires. The data were collected from December 1, 2012 to December 23, 2012. The result were as follows; The average level of perception about disaster nursing was 18.16 out of 25 points, suggesting that they generally perceived disaster nursing as an important matter. Core competencies of the subjects on disaster nursing was 41.56 out of 75 points, which was moderate for the core competencies on disaster nursing. There was statistically significant positive correlation between the perception about disaster nursing and core competencies on disaster nursing. It is necessary to develop disaster nursing program to reflect the needs of the field in Korea. Further research is needed to adequately address this issue.

  • The aim of this research is to examine demand of disaster nursing education and core competencies of clinical nurses, and identify elements affecting their core competencies. The data analysis found that there was difference in demand of disaster nursing education(p=.036) depending on disaster experiences, and that there were differences in core competencies depending on age(p=.013), department(p=.007), experiences of disaster nursing education(p<.001), and consciousness of disaster preparedness(p<.001). In addition, it was identified that consciousness of disaster preparedness(p=.003) and experiences of disaster nursing education(p<.001) are the elements affecting core competencies in disaster nursing. It is expected that the findings of this research will be used as basic resources to improve the ability to quickly respond to disaster, and to explore development of education programs on clinical practices.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the menstrual pain, clinical practice stress, and clinical competence and identify influencing factors of clinical competence of 3rd nursing students who start clinical practice for the first tim. The survey was conducted on 155 nursing students from June 1 to October 30, 2020. Data were analyzed using t-test, ANOVA, Scheffe test, Pearson correlation coefficients and multiple regression analysis. The degree of influence menstrual pain was 5.01points, clinical practice stress was 2.82points, clinical competence was 3.42points. Menstrual pain was positive correlated with clinical practice stress(r=.319, p=.000), and menstrual pain was negative correlated with clinical competence(r=-.279, p=.000). Clinical practice stress was negative correlated with clinical competence(r=-.333, p=.005). Menstrual pain was main factor that affects clinical competence. The model explained 25.0% of the variables. Therefore, intervention education is needed to reduce menstrual pain in order to improve the clinical competence of nursing students.

  • This study was done to identify the effects of self-monitoring method using smartphone video on self-directed learning ability, competency in nursing skills self-confidence and practice satisfaction of nursing students. It was designed a quasi-experimental study with a pre-post test. The participants were 54 students in the experimental group and 51 students in the control group. There was no significant difference in self-directed learning ability (p = .450) between the groups, but there was a significant difference between the pre-post scores of the experimental group. There was no significants difference of competency in nursing skills, self-confidence and practice satisfaction between the two groups. In conclusion, the self-assessment learning method using smartphone video during the self-practice is considered to be an effective method to improve the self-directed learning ability and to ensure the accuracy and skill of the technique.

  • This study aimed to examine the effects of simulation-based neonatal nursing care education on the communication competence, self-efficacy, clinical competency. A one-group pre-and post test design was used. A total of 122 students participate. Data was collected from May 3 to June 4, 2021, using self-report questionnaires only for students who understood the purpose of the study and gave written consent to participate. For the simulation-based neonatal nursing care education, a total of three steps of preparation for scenario implementation, scenario implementation, and debriefing were applied in groups of 3-4 people of 4.5 hours. As a result of this study, it was found that the simulation-based neonatal nursing care education had statistically significant improvement in communication competence, self-efficacy, clinical competency. Through the results of this study, it was confirmed that simulation-based education in the nursing care of children can be an effective teaching-learning method that can supplement the observation-oriented clinical practice of child nursing for nursing students.

  • As medical practices and procedures become more specialized and information technology develops in clinical settings, health organizations need medical personnel with special skills, knowledge and competency. But the lack of practical experience in clinical settings may impair competency in basic nursing skills among nursing students. This study used a cross-sectional survey to analyze factors related to nursing competency among nursing students in order to establish effective teaching methods to increase the clinical competency of nursing students. The data were collected from a questionnaire distributed in several universities among 106 nursing students who expressed a willingness to participate in the study during December 2011 in order to measure self-directedness, professional self-concepts, communication ability, learning satisfaction. The data were analyzed using the SPSS window program. There were differences regarding competency in basic nursing skills according to interpersonal relationships, grades, existence of an open lab. The level of learning satisfaction, communication skills and self-directedness were deemed influencing factors regarding competency in basic nursing skills. These 3 elements account for 49.9% of competency with regard to basic nursing skills. According to existing research, blended learning methods which consist of problem based learning, cyber education or case centered education should be considered as effective teaching methods for developing clinical nursing skills.
