Experimental Study on Characteristics of Track Settlement Depending on Components of Ballast Track (자갈도상 궤도 구성품에 따른 궤도 침하 특성에 대한 실험적 연구)

  • As a basic study to develop maintenance-effective optimal ballast track in preparation for upgrading a conventional line to a high speed railway, a full-scale test that combined the components of ballast track was conducted and the characteristic of track settlement was analyzed. As a result of the full-scale test, reduction in maintenance via an increase of the elasticity of only the pad was insignificant; however, the effect increased significantly with increasing of the weight of the sleeper or with increasing of the weight of the sleeper and the thickness of the ballast together with use of a pad with high resiliency. An optimal type of ballast track, in line with upgrading the speed of a conventional line, shall be developed through cost efficiency analysis considering the maintenance cost depending on the track settlement as well as the initial construction cost.

  • As sustainable growth has been emphasized in the field of transportation, the railway system has been promoted as an environmentally-friendly transport mode. However, mode shifts from other transport modes to railway have been sluggish. In this context, to enhance the understanding of railway's competitive advantages and disadvantages, this research evaluates travelers'preferences for public transport modes for inter-regional trips: such understanding should make it possible to formulate effective policy for promoting railways. To this end, passenger recognition of competitive transport modes has been measured by applying multidimensional scaling analysis for six major inter-regional public transport services - KTX, ITX-Samaeul, Mugunghwa-ho, premium express bus, general express bus, and airline. As a result, we can conceptualize the recognition similarity in two-dimensional space, and understand how travelers perceive the six major transport modes.

  • This study features an analysis of the socio-economic factors of ten cities on the Honam-line that affect the number of train passengers. The 3 main factors based on the principal component analysis were the population, the distance between two regions, and the area size of each region while the number of automobiles has been conventionally used instead of the area size of each region. A formula to predict the train passengers by the regression analysis was developed and showed a good agreement to the number of real passengers. When Honam highspeed railway is opened, the traveling time between two regions as well as the area size of each regions should be more precisely considered.

  • There are lots of examples for naming railway lines and stations in Korea. In general, we can specify some type of principles for making names at the railway lines. The first, rail line name made some decision considering the origin and destination name of city or region. The second type of a decision making is the location or service areas of that railway line or station. And other one is about the destination city or region of that corridor line. In this paper, we classified the name of the railway line according to above three types of decision principles, and then suggested the guideline and future directions preventing any confusion to make a new railway line name afterwards.

  • The logistics collaboration is begun in the transport part and introducing it in all fields of the distribution including delivery and the storage in these days. The effectiveness by the logistics collaboration is proved in many forms and adopted in many parts positively. However, logistics collaboration are enforced around road transport now. In this paper, it is examined for logistics collaboration introduction plan in the railroad part which is outstanding in environmental. The logistics collaboration are examined for transport and storage in not only the Railway main line transport but also the railroad station.

A Study of the Status and Characteristics of a Private Railway During the Japanese Colonial Period (일제 강점기 사설철도의 변화와 특징에 관한 연구)

  • This paper analyzes the under-researched field of the characteristics of th Chosun private railway, such as laws, systems, human resources, and subsidies associated with this railway, in an effort to increase our understanding of these characteristics. It was found that the private railway shared strong identity resemblance with a national project, as it served to assist the roles of the main national railway. General patterns of change of the company indicate that the private railway received increased subsidies consequent to the amendment of a related law and that it was strongly influenced by Japan's railway policies. The private railway system during the Chosun period more subsidies than those administered by Japan, and they tended to depend on fund raising for external capital. A tendency of many board members to be from the Chosun bureau was also noted. Profits in the private railway system were relatively low compared to those of the national railway such that the deficits were supplemented by the subsidies redeived. Based on corroborating examples, the private railway system can be said to have been an organization that had strong connections with national projects. It was especially related to regional industries according to an examination of the distribution of lines, which shows that most assisted the main railway or coincided with regions undergoing industrial development. Typically, northern areas were for resource development while southern areas were for agricultural production and/or passenger transportation. The company carried dual traits as it operated as a subsidiary enterprise for peripheral profit while also playing a role in transportation.

  • 해방후 3대산업선 건설시만 해도 철도건설기술은 토목공사의 선구자였다. 그러나 1960년대 경부고속도로 개통으로 도로기술이 앞서게 되고 철도의 발전도 침체되어 오다가, 시속 300km/h의 경부고속철도가 2004년 개통을 앞두고 있는 현 시점에서 비로소 철도의 효용성을 알게 되었고 대도시의 대중교통에서도 역시 지하철이 최선임을 알게 되었을뿐만 아니라 남북화해에 가장 뜻 있는 경의선 남북 철도 연결과 대륙간 연장 운행의 필요성으로 그 의의가 크게 되어 이제야말로 우리나라 철도의 르네상스 시대가 도래한 것 같다.(중략)
