  • Most of the eggs and (or) pre-larvae of Acheilognathus signifer were observed from the gills of Unio douglasiae sinuolatus, 30~45 mm in the shell length, that is the host mussel of A. signifer. There was no selectivity in proportion to mussel size at the range observed. One to seven individual eggs and (or) pre-larvae were found in the mussels, with a mean of 2.5 individuals, and the rate of possessing one egg and (or) pre-larva was 50.0%. When the prelarva of A. signifer acquired swimming ability inside the mussel, it moved into the suprabranchial chamber. It was estimated that the growth period was 4~6 weeks. The minute tubercles of the pre-larvae were observed immediately after hatching. Absorption of the minute tubercles was observed starting the 7 th day, with most of tubercles absorbed 13 days after hatching and completed 20 days after the yolk was entirely absorbed.

  • Five commercially valuable Korean Veneroid, Protothaca jedoensis, Ruditapes philippinarum, Saxidomus purpuratus, Cyclina sinensis and Meretrix lusoria were recognized by comparing internal and external morphological characters. As length of the primary tooth was directly grown proportional to shell size but all other characters were not measured according to size of shell. Hence, the morphological characters of these Veneroids may be estimated from the size of the unique primary tooth and it might be enough to be a good criterion for identification of species among Veneriods. Numerical index of hinge plate length of these species was assessed systematically, irrespective of measuring the length, height and width of the shell. The highest internal and external morphological similarity was observed between P. jedoensis and R. philippinarum and the lowest similarity was observed between P. jedoensis and M. lusoria. These similarities may be affected by multiple environmental factors as well as genetic characters. For artificial seed production of P. jedoensis, R. philppinarum, a closest relative among the five species, must be focussed.

  • Scapharca satawi is dioecious and attains sexual maturity, when it grows to a shell length of 70 mm. Its ovary is composed of a number of ovarian sacs; likewise, its testis is also composed of several testicular tubules. During the year 1999-2000, the condition index reached the maximum (0.017) in June and spawning occurred from July to September, when water temperature remained above 23$^{\circ}C$. The reproductive cycle of S. satowi can be classified into five successive stages: early active (December to March), late active (April to May), ripe (June 7o July), partially spawned (July to September) and spent/inactive (September and November) stages. Monthly changes in the condition index were closely relaxed to its reproductive cycle.

  • Elucidation of the metabolic pathway due to 50% dietary restriction carried out in this study. Seventy male and female wealning rats, weighed $43{\pm}2g$ were divided into seven groups, 10 rats each. Twenty rats, ten males and ten females were sacrificed every three weeks after 50% dietary restriction for whole length of the experiment, nine weeks. Pair-feeding was employed in this study. According to the increment of the dietary restricted period, the body and organ weights were decreased. Especially liver and spleen were mostly shrinked in their weights, and brain was the most stable organ in account of dietary restricted effect. In comparison nitrogen retention between restricted and unrestricted groups, the former showed lower than the later but tubulated into the rate of Nitrogen retention per gram of body weight, reverse was true in this respect. In regardness of the experimental organs, spleen revealed the most fast change and the brain the most slow change their content of RNA and DNA in account of the 30% dietary restriction. Hematological investigation did not show any anemic conditions in both restricted and unrestricted groups. Also serum albumin contents A/G ratio, did not effect due to 50% dietary restrictions.

  • This study was carried out to obtain the biological fundamental data for the resources annexation of Crassostrea ariakensis in terms of the effect of temperature and salinity on growth. Water temperature during the sampling period was $3.5\sim26.2^{\circ}C$ and there was a little difference between each sites. Salinity was ranged from 2.6 to 29.5 psu, its maximum in Baealdo and its minimum in Dontak. The fatness index was the higher in Dontak than the other sites. In August, the value was the lowest in 3 sites. Therefore Crassostrea ariakensis is likely to have spawning period June and July. Size values $(mean{\pm}S.D.)$ of shell height was $149.7{\pm}19.8\;mm$ (Baealdo), $148.6{\pm}21.3\;mm$ (Seomjin bridge) and $143.1{\pm}17.6\;mm$ (Dontak), respectively. Relative growth equations among SH, SL, SW, TW and MW of Crassostrea ariakensis were ranged from 0.024 to 0.0471.

  • An apicomplexan parasite, Perkinsus sp. was observed from the cultured baby clams, Ruditapes philippinarum, collected from the coast of Kochang and Taean (South Korea), where it caused seasonal mortality of clams. Several milky-white cysts were observed on the surface of gill and visceral mass of parasitised clams. The trophozoites of parasite had eccentric nucleus and proliferated by schizogony in gill, mantle, hepatopancrease and reproductive tissues, resulting in the formation of granuloma and the intensive infiltration of hemocytes in the tissues. During incubation in FTM, trophozoites increased in size, resulting in prezoosporangia which appeared as round black spheres when colored with Lugols iodine solution. The prevalence of Perkinsus sp. in clams was Kochang, 73.1%; Taean, 94.8% (during 9-mo. survey) and showed size-dependent infection. Hemacolor kit was useful to reduce time for diagnosis of the trophozoite of Perkinsus sp. that has been responsible of massive motalities in the clam.

  • Growth of Pacific oystey, Crassostrea gigas, in Kamak Bay, Korea was modeled using Von Bertalanffy growth function, seasonal Von Bertalanffy growth function and generalized growth equation of Schnute and Richards' growth model, based on shell length and wet weight frequency data of 9208 oysters. Carrying capacity in the oyster culture ground was also estimated using Schaefer's and Fox's surplus production model. The present results suggest that the generalized growth equation of Schnute and Richards' model is fitter to describe the length growth pattern of C. gigas than Von Bertalanffy growth functions. This results also suggest that the current number of culture facility per unit area in 2000 is similar to the number of facility that produces the maximum production of oyster per unit area.

  • A 10-week feeding trial was conducted to investigate the effects of several yeasts with or without chemical treatment (protoplasted) in formulated diets on growth and body composition of juvenile abalone(Haliotis discus hanai). There replicate groups of the abalone average weighing 210 mg were fed one of eight isonitrogenous (30%) and isolipidic (4.4%) diets containing 3% Kluyveromyces fragilis protoplasted K. fragilis Candida utilis protoplasted C. utilis, Saccharomyces cerevisiae protoplasted S. cerevisiae or brewer's yeast. In addition these formulated diets were compared with commercial diet. Survival rate and proximate analysis of soft whole body of abalone were not significantly affected by the different dietary yeasts and commercial diet (P>0.05) Body weight gain and soft body weight control diet and diets containing S. cerevisiae or brewer's yeast (P<0.05) Shell length of abalone fed yeast and commercial diet (P<0.05) Th results suggest that protoplasted K. fragilis as an additive in this formulated diet can improve weight gain of abalone.

  • Shell necrosis, which is found in the juvenile stage of Haliotis discus hannai in th culture process, was examine in this study. In the necrosis shell, bacteria of rod type and a blue green algal species with heterocyst were observed. However, it appears to be caused by a boring blue green alga, Mastigocoleus sp., as based on SEM data. At the time of its infection, the shell was discolored from green into bright-grey, and then began to be brittle at the 4th to 6th breathing hole. After 60 days of culture, necrosis occurred in the breathing holes with many brown tiny colony, and continued to 3 years after culture. This shell necrosis was found in the tank culture system in land rather than in the cage culture system in sea, and greatly affected to the growth of Haliotis discus hannai, resulting in very small size of 16mm in 3 year old shell.
