  • This study investigated purplish Washington clam, Saxidomus purpuratus on its gonadal development, reproductive cycle and shell length (age) at 50% female group maturity from January to December 2011 in Jinhae Bay, Korea. This species is dioecious. The gonad index (GI) began to increase in January, reached the maximum value in May and to decrease in June, reached the minimum value in September then to increase slowly in October again. The reproductive cycle of the clams can be divided into five successive stages: the early active stage (Ea, from February to March), the late active stage (La, from January to March and October to December), the ripe stage (R, from January to May), the spawning stage (S, from June to December) and the degenerative and inactive stage (Ia, from January to February and November to December). The spawning periods were from June to December and the main spawning periods were from July to October. The shell length at 50% female group maturity (SL50) was estimated to be 63.6 mm, which can be converted as sexual maturity age of 2.2 year.

  • In order to obtain the basic information for seedling production of surf clam, Spisula sachalinensis, annual reproductive cycle was investigated from March 1994 to May 1995. S. sachalinensis was dioecious. The gonads are located between the digestive diverticula and muscle tissue of the foot. The condition factor was reached its maximum (0.19) in June, and then decreased to 0.16 in July. In November, the value was the lowest and then increased slowly. The age and minimum size for sexual maturation were 2 years old and about 50 mm in shell length, respectively. However, less than $10\%$ of sexually undifferentiated individuals were larger than 80 mm in shell length. On the other hand, the size of mature oocytes was ranged to $50\~60{\mu}m$ in diameter and testis-ova was observed in testis of the mature stage. Annual reproductive cycle could be classified into five successive stages : multiplicative (October to January), growing (February to April), mature (April to June), spawning (June and July) and degenerative and resting (August and September) stages.

  • Larval morphogenesis and infection rates of Cercaria pectinata Huet were investigated in regards to histological changes and mortality of the hard clam, Meretrix lusoria $(R\ddot{o}ding)$, in Buan located on the Western Coast of Korea. The trichocerous cercariae, Cercaria pectinata, and its sporocysts parasitize mainly in the tissues of goand, digestive gland and gills of the hard clams. One branched sporocyst grows into a great number of cylindrical sporocysts, and a heavily infected clam possesses 2,000 to 5,000 cylindrical spo ro cysts. Each of them produces approximately 30 to 70 germinal cells and cercariae. Of 2,639 clams examined 347 individuals $(13.2\%)$ were found to be infected. The infection rates showed seasonal variations, the rate being highest $(29.6\%)$ in July, and lowest $(2.0\%)$ in March. Whereas, the infection rates did not change significantly with the changes of size class of the shell. No infection was observed in Meretrix petachialis (Lamarck) collected from Myeong-ji, Kimhae Gun located near Busan. In the iefected clams, the gametogenesis (oogenesis and apermatogenesis) did not undergo completely, therefore the heavily infected clam seemed to be castrated. Also the tissues of the digestive gland and gills were compressed by the multiplication of the parasites. When they were kept in aquariums in the laboratory, high mortality has occurred in the infected clams. All of the 60 infected clams died within 35 days.

  • Mortality of clam, Meretrix lusoria was measured during the experimental cultures in different sediments compositions and in different salinities of sea water. Experimental groups maintained in silt and clay showed significant mortality, while those treated in sand and in sand-silt showed little mortality. In the groups cultured in silt and clay, young groups of approximately 2.5cm in shell length were subjected to early and high mortality (approximately eighty-five per cent in foully-one days). The larger the shell size was, the later and the lower the mortality occurred. In different salinity, the groups maintained in silt and clay showed different mortalities. It is observed that the survival rate of the shell in the sea water of low salinity was higher than that in the high salinity water. Oxygen consumption of isolated gill tissue showed a little difference between the groups maintained in silt and clay and those in sand (the control-group). Consequently, it may be stated that the mortality results mainly from the deposition of silt and clay, although the survival rate of Meretrix lusoria depends also on water temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, body size ana other factors.

  • Growth status of the Littleneck calm Ruditapes philippinarum (Adams et Reeve) in Komso Bay was investigated by 600 individuals from February 2003 to January 2004. Based on the monthly variation of marginal growth rate of the shellfish, it was suggested that ring formation occurres between January and March once a year and takes approximately 19 months (1.58 old ages) to form a complete ring. The relationship between the shell height(SH) and the total weight(TW) could be represented by the following equation $TW=2.8{\times}\;10^{-3}SH^{2.3648}$. And the relationship between the shell height(SH) and shell length(SL) as well as the shell width(SW) were represented by equations SL=1.0027SH+5.812 and SW=0.5121H+1.2849 respectively. Growth curves for shell height and total weight fitted to the Bertalanffy's equation were expressed as $SH_t=42.83(1-e^{-0.4595(t-0.59)})$ and $TW_t=20.17(1-e^{-0.4595(t-0.59)})^{2.3648.}$

  • Settlement, recruitment, growth and production of Mactra venerifomis were investigated at Kunsan tidal flat located in the west coast of Korea from lune 1993 to May 1994. High density of planktonic larvae of M. veneriformis was observed between the mid and early July in 1993. The size of the newly settled larvae ranged from 250 to 350um in shell length with mean density of 601$inds.\cdot m^{-3}$. Recruitment of M. veneriformis larvae was occurred mainly in the mid June to mid July 1993. The larvae have no substratum preference during the larval settlement phase. Mortality of larval was affected by environment (substratum, exposure time, density of adult clams). After settlement they grew until November, and stopped growing in winter from December. The estimated turnover rate of M. veneriformis larvae was estimated as high as 4.91 and 4.94. Annual production of the 0-age group was estimated to be 2,900g $m^{-2}\;\cdot\;yr^{-l}$, which was relatively high compared with those of other age groups.

  • The investigated amounts according to microalgae for stable supply of artificial seed of the hard clam, Meretrix petechialis and also observed the effect according to the repower of the microalgae after the specified period starvation. The stage of specimen used in the test was the D-shaped larva. The microalgae was Chaetoceros calcitrans, Isochrysis galbana and Nannochloris oculata. When the mixture of Chaetoceros calcitrans, Isochrysis galbana and Nannochloris oculata or alone C. calcitrans as food was supplied with 3,000-5,000 cells/ind., it turned to be the most effective. When the food was provided after starvation for some period, the shell length of D-shaped larva was grown to over $192.5{\mu}m$ at fourth day from the initial feeding. The survival rate tended to be lower, the longer the starvation period.

  • This study was carrie out to develop practical feed formulation for juvenile abalone (Haliotis discus hannai). Three replicate groups of abalone averaging 120mg were fed one of 7 isoproteic (34%) and isolipidic (5.3%) dlets containing various practical ingredients such as casein, fish meal, soybean meal, cottonseed meal, Undaria powder, wheat flour, spirulina, starch, and/or wheat germ meal for 4 months. The prices (5,000~800 won/kg diet) of these experimental diets were adjusted by adding different levels and ratios of practival ingredients. In addition, these experimental diets were compared with commercial feed or natural food (Undaria). Weight gain, soft body weight and shell growth of abalone fed experimental diets with low prices (2,500~800 won/kg diet) and commercial diet were significantly higher than those of abalone fed experimental diet with high price (5,000 won/kg diet)and natural food (P<0.05). The results indicate that our economic formulation (about 1,000 won/kg diet) can be useful for juvenile abalone.
