The purpose of this study is to explore the process that youths get involved in delinquent behavior after runaway. The experiences of runaway youths are studied interpretively, so that interactive features between situations and the youths are revealed. In this way, it is expected that directions in social services to prevent and intervene with delinquent behaviors of runaway youths can be suggested. Eleven youths who have experienced running-away participated in the in-depth interviews. Their narratives are interpreted through the procedures of interpretive interactionism by Denzin(1989). Five phases of the delinquency process have been discovered: Using personal resources, getting help from new relationships, exploring alternatives to survive, learning delinquent way of living, and living independently through delinquency. Interpreted contextually, it has been founded that delinquency is a behavior to survive and a developmental process on the street, taking place in a situation of blocked communication, nevertheless within people's networks. Thus, it is suggested that the problem of runaways are not to be treated narrowly as responsibilities of the youths themselves or their families, but to be approached from the viewpoint of providing social service systems that work as a safety network and offer alternatives for the youths to survive, to resolve their troubles, and to keep healthy lives.
This researched is an investigation about the youths runaways street life experienced, the crimes committed through the influenced living in the street by looking into the effectiveness of the youth welfare and make an observation of their direction. The survey was conducted on young people who met in the youth shelter and outreach program, and finally analyzed 259 copies. The results of the study are as follows. First, When comparing the ages of the runaway youths if not properly given a support, services and prevention after running away from home, these youth will live their life in the street until their adolescents. Second, Runaway youth shelter has been providing the needs of those runaway youth who came in the shelter. However, it needs necessary new policy and services that will augment the support in solving problems of the youths when they visit youth shelter to ask for help and support. Third, It can be seen that the flight behavior after the street life is increased. They are in a situation where they have no choice but to join the juveniles for street life. Finally, Street life Youth self-reliance, support for living expenses, housing facilities, job opportunities, technical and job skill training were highly desired by the youths. Eventually, the intervention of youth living in street life requires a multifaceted support such as housing, labor, education, and welfare.
Purpose: In recent years, the problem of runaway youths, which is rapidly increasing and worsening in nature, has emerged as a serious problem to individuals, home and the society as a whole. Against this back drop, this study was designed to illuminate the danger signals through extensive analysis of factors influencing the running away of middle-school students and, on this basis, build a forecast model on runaway middle-school students. Method: The subjects of this descriptive survey on the causal relation were 592 subjects enrolled in middle schools selected through convenience sampling. The data collected from June 19 to July 19, 2003 were analysed through the SPSS 10.0 program. The differences between the runaway group and the non-runaway group were determined through chi-square and t-test. Also logistic regression analysis was conducted on the basis of the purposeful selection method for constructing the forecast model. Result: The findings are as follows: Individual-related factors predicting runaway middle-school students were smoking experience, delinquent experience, psychosomatic symptoms and stress. A home-related factor was attachment to family. A society-related factor was the number of delinquency friends. Conclusion: The findings of this study suggest that a broad intervention program should be provided to middle-school students' culture related to runaway group. It is also recommended that a variety of individual, home and society-related programs should be developed for the runaway group.

Object:This study was carried out to classify adolescents in runaway shelters by evaluating their psychopathology. And the ultimate purpose is to offer basic data for preventing adolescents‘ runaway and for diversifying runaway shelters suitable for the problem of individual adolescent. Method:128 adolescents who stay in the runaway shelters were asked to complete self-report qeustionnaires including basic sociodemographic data, Child Behavior Check List(CBCL), Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory(MMPI), and Symptom Check List-90-Revised(SCL-90-R). Korean Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale(K-WAIS)[or Korean Educational Developmental Institute-Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children(KEDI-WISC)] and Bender-Gestalt test(BGT) were also done by clinical psychologists. Results:The most common age of the subjects were 15-year-old, and they dropped out their schools in the middle school most commonly. Mostly they were from middle class family and their parents' educational level were high school graduates. The first runaway episode was most common in the middleschool period, and their runaways were repeated. The most common frequency of runaways were more than 10 times. About 10% of them abused drugs and about 80% of them abused alcohol. One third of them had experiences of illegal problems and 10% of them engaged in sexual activity for money. 95 adolescents(83%) in CBCL, 42 adolescents(36%) in SCL-90-R, and 70 adolescents(69.3%) in MMPI showed clinical significance. In intelligence test, 22 adolescents(22%) were mentally retarded. In BGT, 35 adolescents(39.4%) manifested brain dysfunction signs. Conclusion:Runaway adolescents in the shelters have variable and severe psychopathology. Their psychopathology is classified as follows; The behavior disorder group, the mood disorder group with anxiety/depression, the somatic disorder group with somatic symptoms, and the psychosis group with possibility of severe psychopathology. Therefore it is very important to evaluate psychiatric problems of runaway adolescents, and specific therapeutic interventions according to their problems are required.
This Study investigated the differences of risk assessment tool and personality assessment inventory (PAI) by recidivism types of juvenile delinquents, the psychological factors that have a influence of juvenile behaviors. 268 incipient Juvenile criminals who had committed crime in the areas of Seoul, were categorized in the three degree of recidivism types. The result showed the significant differences among risk assessment tool, such as family functioning risk factor, school risk factor, away-from-home risk factor, delinquent risk factor, and personal risk factor. PAI scores among the recidivism type showed the significant differences on SOM, DEP, PAR, SCZ, BOR, ANT, ALC, DRG, AGG, SUI, STR, NON, DOM, and WRM. The predictor variables explained a risk assessment tool were STR, ALC, DEP, DOM and WRM in PAI scales. And the interventions and preventions about juvenile delinquents discussed in psychological aspects.
Purpose: The purpose of the study was to compare the characteristics between adolescents who have run away from home before and who have contemplated running away from home before, and to find risk factors that predict runaway behavior among them. Methods: The data of 「the survey on adolescents' right to adequate housing and the way to ensure their housing with the focus on social exclusion」 by the National Youth Policy Institute (2020) were analyzed. A total of 494 adolescents were included in the study. Descriptive statistics, x2 test, t-test, and simple and multiple logistic regressions were carried out using SAS 9.2. Results: Gender, depression, anxiety, self-esteem, and school level were significantly different between the two groups. From the multivariate analysis, the adjusted odds ratio for runaway behavior was significantly higher in male students (AOR: 2.14, p<.001), lower in the middle economic class than in the high economic class (AOR: 0.64, p=.051), lower in the 4th quartile group of self-esteem (AOR: 0.52, p=.041), and higher in high school students (AOR: 1.55, p=.050). Conclusion: Considering that male students, students from wealthier families, students with low self-esteem, and high school students are high-risk groups for runaway behavior, among adolescents who have contemplated running away before, interventions targeting these groups are needed.
The purpose of this study is to explore the stress profile that adolescent perceives by using Latent Profile Analysis (LPA), and to examine the effect of characteristics variable per groups that appeared in profile. By using the cross-section data of 'A survey on the human right of Korean children and adolescent in 2013' issued by National Youth Policy Institute, the LPA concerning the stress type was conducted and surveyed 9,521 adolescents from fourth grade in elementary school to seniors in high school nationwide. The result of this study shows that two class types were selected according to the goodness-of-fit index and latent class classification rate. Type 1 is named low-risk group as they show low level, whereas type 2 is named relative risk group as they show high level. In order to predict the characteristics of adolescent stress, the study conducted Binary Logistic Regression analysis on the basis of low-risk group. There is higher probability to belong to relative risk group, the more they are female students than male students, the less their subjective health condition and happiness, the more runaway experience, the less school grades and the less economic affluence in their household. The implication of this research, its limitation and direction of follow-up research were suggested.
The objective of this study was to examine the relation between delinquency and career maturity in school adolescents and to determine whether activities for enhancing career maturity can have protective effects against juvenile delinquencies. Research questions for this study are: first, how serious school adolescents' delinquencies are; and second, what relation there is between delinquency and career maturity in school adolescents. Third, how different is school adolescents' career maturity according to their experience in delinquencies? The results of this study were as follows. First, 55.8% of the school adolescents committed one or more of the 14 types of delinquent acts included in the delinquency inventory during the last one year, and the percentage was higher among male students than among female ones. Second, no correlation was observed between the school adolescents' overall delinquency level and overall career maturity. According to the sub-factors of career maturity, however, the overall delinquency level was in a negative correlation with objectiveness and a positive correlation with independence/decisiveness. That is, objectiveness was higher in the group without experiences in delinquencies than in the group with such experiences. and Type II status offenses (truancy, runaway) was in a negative correlation with overall career maturity, and in a negative correlation with objectiveness and confidence. Third, no significant difference was observed in career maturity between those with experience in delinquencies and those without. Among the sub-factors of career maturity, however, objectiveness was higher in those without experience in delinquencies than in those with. and Overall career maturity, and objectiveness and confidence among the sub-factors of career maturity were significantly higher in those without experience in Type II (truancy, runaway) status offenses than those with. The results of this study suggest that the objectiveness of career maturity can be a protective factor against juvenile delinquency. Furthermore, they suggest that activities for enhancing career maturity may protect adolescents from Type II status offenses. These results may provide basic materials necessary to develop career counseling approaches and interventions strategies for preventing school adolescents' delinquencies.
