  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to identify the nutritional status in Korean children eating breakfast together as a family or skipping breakfast from the 2013 ~ 2015 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES). Methods: A total of 1,393 subjects (boys = 731, girls = 662), aged 6 ~ 11 years, were presented with a 24 hr-recall method, and classified according to their eating breakfast together as a family or skipping breakfast; and eating breakfast together as a family (EBF group; boys = 580, girls = 548), eating breakfast alone (EBA group; boys = 100, girls = 67), and skipping breakfast (SB group; boys = 51, girls = 47). Results: In the boys, the SB group had a significantly lower carbohydrate (p = 0.0198) and vitamin C (p = 0.0219) density, and a higher fat (p = 0.0020) density than the EBF and EBA groups. In both boys and girls, the EBF and EBA groups showed a significantly larger number of dishes in breakfast than the SB group (p < 0.0001, respectively). In boys, the EBF group showed a significantly higher number of foods in breakfast than the EBA and SB groups (p < 0.0001). Conclusion: Children eating breakfast together as a family may be associated with a variety of food intake than children eating breakfast alone and skipping breakfast.

  • This study was designed to investigate and evaluate the dietary intake of 30 housewives, aged 35 to 59. The subjects kept daily diet records lot a period of one year. Their mean daily nutrient intakes met or exceeded the RDA (recommended dietary allowance) for all categories except energy, calcium, iron, vitamin A, and vitamin B$_2$. Mean daily calorie intakes were 81.2% of the RDA. The subjects received about 19% of their energy from fat and 15% from protein. Nutrient adequacy ratios (NAR) were 0.60 for calcium, 0.62 for iron, 0.71 for vitamin A, and 0.76 for vitamin B$_2$. The mean adequacy ratio (MAR) was 0.79. Subjects received various nutrients from rice, pork, eggs, and Kimchi. Rice was a major contribute. to many subjects' nutrient intake due to the high amount of consumption. Pork, rice, and vegetable oil greatly contributed to fat intakes while eggs, pork, and beef supplied a high level of cholesterol compared to other foods. Kimchi, anchovies, and milk were the major contributors of calcium, while rice, pork, and Kimchi were the major contributors of iron. These results indicate that the major nutritional problem of middle-aged housewives is an overall inadequate intake of energy, calcium, and iron.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships between frailty, nutritional status, positive thinking, family function, and health conservation and to identify the factors influencing health conservation of the elderly at home. Methods: The research design was a descriptive survey using a convenience sampling. Data were collected from 142 elders using self-reported questionnaires. Data were analyzed using the SPSS/WIN 20.0 program for descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlation coefficients, and multiple linear regression. Results: The average health conservation score was 98.85. There were significant correlations between frailty, nutritional status, positive thinking, family function and health conservation. As a result of the multiple linear regression analysis, positive thinking, perceived health status, spouse and frailty accounted for 69% of the variance in health conservation of the elderly at home. Conclusion: These influencing factors on health conservation can be taken into account in the development of nursing intervention programs for improving health conservation of the elderly at home.

Methods: Data were collected by questionnaires from 214 women with breast cancer in inpatient and outpatient settings at three different university hospitals and one cancer hospital in B city, Korea. The instruments included Family Support Scale, Perceived Health Status Scale, and Self Esteem Scale. The collected data were analyzed using frequency, percentage, t-test, ANOVA, Scheffe's test, and Pearson's correlation coefficients by SPSS WIN 15.0 program. Results: There were significant differences in the family support by age, education, and cost burden. There were significant differences in the perceived health status by education, occupation, economic status, pain, fatigue, and cancer insurance. There were significant differences in the self esteem by age, occupation, economic status, type of religion, pain, fatigue, and cancer insurance. Self-esteem was significantly correlated with family support and perceived health status. Conclusion: These results suggested that promoting perceived health status and enhancing family support would increase self-esteem effectively among Korean women with breast cancer.

  • Purpose: This study was to identify the levels of functional status, depression, family support and their relationship among those variables in head and neck cancer patients. Method: The subjects were 100 patients with head and neck cancer patients who visited at outpatients clinic in one university hospital in Taegu. The instrument used for this study were Functional Status in Head & Neck Cancer - Self Report Scale developed by Baker(1995), Self-Rating Depression Scale by Zung(1965) and Family support assessment tool by Kang hyun-suk(1984). The data were analysed percentage, mean, t-test, ANOVA and pearson's corelation using SAS program. Result: There was significantly negative correlation between functional status and depression(r=-.71) and between depression and family support(r=-.56). The relationship of functional status and family support was significant as r= .33. Conclusion: It was found that functional status, depression and family support of head and neck cancer patient were closely related each other. Therefore it is necessary to design nursing intervention to enhance family support or decrease depression for improving quality of life in head and neck cancer patient.

  • Pregnancies of unmarried women are one of the most serious sex problems because they can negatively affect the lives and development of both unwed mothers and their extramarital children. The number of unwed adolescent mothers is growing recently, extending the seriousness of the problem. This study was conducted to explore the ego-state, life position and family systems that may cause unmarried pregnancy. The data obtained from the structured questionnaire survey of 79 unmarried adolescent mothers and 82 female adolescents were analyzed in terms of frequency and t-test using the SPSS WIN 8.0 program. The results were as follows: 1. Ego-state elements of unmarried adolescent mothers were distributed evenly in general and this falls under the All B(BBBBB) type of ego-gram, just like the adolescents. As for the subject adolescent mothers, CP was the lowest among the 5 egos. 2. As to the life position, the position of "I′m OK, You′re OK"was the highest for both groups, with slight differences. 3. With regard to the family system types sorted by the combination of family cohesion and family adaptability levels, both the adolescent. mothers and adolescents tended to perceive their families as somewhat-balanced or balanced families. 4. While the two groups of adolescent mothers and adolescents showed, on the whole, the same types for all the indicators like above, statistically significant differences were found in more detailed elements.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate expectations regarding aging by middle-aged women in the community, and identify factors contributing to their expectations about aging. Methods: Participants in the survey for this study were 303 middle-aged women from community health centers and religious facilities in Seoul, Gyeonggi Province, and Chungcheongbuk Province. Data were collected from March 2 to April 17, 2012 using self-report structured questionnaires. The instruments were the Health Perceptions, Rosenberg Self-esteem Scale (RSES), Family APGAR, Expectations Regarding Aging (ERA-12). The data were analyzed using t-test, one-way ANOVA, Scheffe test, Pearson correlation coefficients and hierarchical multiple regression with IBM SPSS/WIN 20.0 program. Results: Perceived health status (${\beta}$=0.16, p=.009) and self-esteem (${\beta}$=0.20, p=.001) of middle-aged women were identified as significant predictors of expectations regarding aging, after adjusting for age, education, occupation, monthly income and menstrual status. Conclusion: These results suggest that nurses should make an effort to improve expectations about aging among middle-aged women. Ultimately, community health programs for middle aged women need to be developed to achieve successful aging.
