Among those 186 surveyed, 179 were finally analyzed. Findings from the survey are as follows: First, age, gender, and marital status show differences in familism, consciousness of men's and women's equality, and recognition of family cultural ritual. As to planning the healthy family culture program, the program participants' age, gender, and marital status should be considered to successfully plan and operate the program. • The characteristics of Hyeonmoyangcheo-ism (wise mother, good wife) in the 1950s, which were observed through the girls' school curriculums and homekeeping textbooks, were arranged as follows. Firstly, Hyeonmoyangcheo-ism in homekeeping textbooks in the 1950s stressed the modern housewife. The Confucianwomen's virtues, such as submissiveness, faithfulness and samjongjido (obedience to father, husband and son), that were in girls' moral training and home management textbooks during the Japanese imperialism. This was a part of girls' education built on democracy and equality asserted by a new Korea, the 'modern nation'. Secondly, with the increasing demands for women's labor after the Korean War, women's occupations were reinforced and incorporated in homekeeping textbooks in the 1950s. Even though having a job was a secondary task to the role of a homemaker, the details of women's occupation illustrates the characteristics of Hyeonmoyangcheo-ism in this period of time. Thirdly, The resident practice program emphasized the tradition women's behavior along with the modern homemaker, the rational designer of homekeeping. This seems to have been reinforced from the criticism towards women based on Westernization after the Korean War.

  • This study used a structured questionnaire to analyze the effects of oral habits and stress on temporomandibular disorders in high school students. A total of 339 students attending high schools in Ulsan agreed to participate in the study. Data was analyzed using the SPSS Statistics ver. 18.0 for Windows program, t-test, one-way ANOVA, correlation, and regression analysis. Our results reveal that the temporomandibular disorder index is statistically correlated with the oral habit index, school life stress index, family life stress index, interpersonal stress index, and egosphere stress index (p≤0.01). The oral habit index had maximum influence on the temporomandibular disorder index. Moreover, higher the stress level in egosphere stress, greater significant differences were observed in the temporomandibular disorder index (p≤0.01). In other words, persistence of oral habits and non-addressal of stress increased the likelihood of experiencing temporomandibular disorders in adulthood. This was determined by the regression formula Y (temporomandibular disorder index) = 2.563 + 0.550X1 (oral habit index) + 0.134X2 (egosphere stress index). Thus, bad oral habits and stress in adolescence can be the potential cause of jaw joint disorders in adulthood. We believe that measures are needed to actively recognize and improve oral habits, and properly cope with stress during adolescence.
