  • For autumn cutting of Sedum sarmentosum, the influences of bedsoil and cutting date were investigated. Among six kinds of bedsoils mixed upland soil, carbonized rice and sand, the mixture with upland soil and sand (1:1 and 2:1, v/v) showed excellent root and shoot growth. The mixtures with upland soil and carbonized rice were lower rooting than the mixture with upland soil and sand. In field condition, autumn cutting was conducted with $10{\times}5cm$ space using the mixture with upland soil and sand (2:1, v/v) at intervals of 10 days from September 1 to October 10. Both root and shoot growth were significantly decreased by delayed date. In cutting from early to middle September, root and shoot growth, and number of rosette before wintering were desirable for shoot production next spring. The safety date to autumn cutting before wintering was on September 20 in field condition. If autumn cutting is late than September 20, the number of scion has increased 25-30% to secure a full rosette before wintering. The results could provide the beneficial information for cutting propagation of S. sarmentosum under field condition in autumn.

  • For autumn field cutting of Sedum sarmentosum, the effects of cutting site (distal, middle, and proximal) and planting method (space drill seeding, drill seeding, and broadcast seeding) on survival rate and growth characteristics were investigated at pre- and post-winter season. Plant height root length, stem number per plant, number of branch per plant, fresh weight of shoot, and dry weight of shoot were significantly superior in distal site at pre-wintering (40 days after cutting). At post-wintering (May 10th), stem number per plant, fresh weight and dry weight per $m^2$ in cutting of distal site showed a significant increasement compared to the cutting of proximal site. At pre-wintering (40 days after cutting), the growth in space drill seeding was well than that in drill seeding and broadcast seeding, and fresh weight and dry weight per $m^2$ in space drill seeding were high in order of space drill seeding, broadcast seeding, and drill seeding. At post-wintering (May 10th), stem number per plant, fresh weight and dry weight per $m^2$ in space drill seeding were significantly increased than those in drill seeding. Accordingly, the cutting using distal site of stem in autumn field cutting was desirable for the growth and shoot yield. The space drill seeding showed the highest yield potential among three seeding methods, but broadcast seeding was favorable in saving of labor, because the fresh weight of shoot in broadcast seeding was similar in the space drill seeding at post-wintering.

  • In this study, we tried to overcome a limit in cutting timing of reed culm by applying a plant hormone, indole-acetic acid (IAA) as a growth regulator with various contents ($10^{-3}$ M, $10^{-6}$ M, $10^{-9}$ M, $10^{-12}$ M). 19 shoots emerged from 240 segments of hardened reed culm from montane fen and eight out of the 19 shoots emerged by $10^{-6}$ M IAA treatment as the most in $5^{th}$ Sep. 2012. 50 shoots emerged from 60 segments of non-hardened reed culm from a population in Seoul National University transplanted from Mt. Odae by $10^{-6}$ M IAA treatment despite the cutting was performed about two weeks later ($19^{th}$ Sep.). Via third cutting experiment performed about 40 days later ($29^{th}$ Oct.), only two shoots out of 60 segments were observed by the same experimental condition except atmospheric temperature. It seemed likely that it was too low temperature in third experiment ($10^{\circ}C$) than the former experiments (about $20^{\circ}C$) to form adventitious buds from culm segment. We recommend to utilize the thick reed culm in culm cutting as possible because the thicker culm segment we used, the thicker emerged shoot we could observe (i.e., diameters of emerged shoots were about 20% of the planted segment's diameters).

  • Populus alba ${\times}$ P. glandulosa cuttings in nursery bed were inoculated with mycelium of ectomycorrhizal fungus, Pisolithus tinctorius (Pt) to evaluate effectiveness of the fungus in growth stimulation of poplar. Pt was cultured in 1l glass bottles with vermiculite-peatmoss mixture moistened with modified Melin-Norkrans' solution. The nursery bed was arranged for microplots of $1{\times}2m$ in size and fumigated with methyl bromide before inoculation and cutting placement. Fifty cuttings were placed in each microplot and two treatments (fumigation only and fumigation plus Pt inoculation) were replicated three times. At the end of the first growing season, inoculated plants grew 19% faster in height and produced 49% more dry weight (above-ground portion) than uninoculated plants. Survival rate of inoculated cuttings was also improved by 20% over that of uninoculated cuttings. Inoculated cuttings developed abundant fine root system with golden brown zigzag tips. In the middle of September a sporocarp of Pt was produced from an inoculated plot, suggesting successful establishment of mycorrhiza between poplar and Pt fungus.

  • This study was carried out to investigate growth characteristics and propagation methods of Clerodendron trichotomum for landscape uses. The results are obtained as follows: In the first place, Korean native C. trichotomum was printed in the "Enumeration of plants in Chosun" in 1937 by Tae Hyun Chung. C. trichotomum is a shrub with round shape. This is noted for its late summer flowers, showy fruit and malodorous foliage. White flowers in long-peduncled cymes bloom in the upper leaf axils from late summer into fall. Flowers are followed by small bright blue fruits, each subtended by a fleshy red calyx. C. trichotomum showed high seed germination rate and greater shoot length in plug box than in normal seeding bed. The rooting rate of C. trichotomum according to cutting date was highest on July 7. The optimum date for cutting was on July 7~10 when the shoots were more hardened. Soil acidity ranged from pH 4.58 to 5.52. The most effective method for rooting of C. trichotomum was treatment with 1,000 ppm IBA on July 7 cuttings, which showed rooting rate of over 90%. Korean native C. trichotomum was successfully propagated through soft cutting and seed.
