  • Experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of added diluents (carbon dioxide, nitrogen, and helium) on cellular instabilities in outwardly propagating spherical syngas-air premixed flames. Laminar burning velocities and Markstein lengths were measured by analyzing high-speed schlieren images at various diluent concentrations and equivalence ratios. Experimental results showed substantial reduction of the laminar burning velocities and of the Markstein lengths with the diluent additions in the fuel blends. Effective Lewis numbers of helium-diluted syngas-air flames increased but those of carbon dioxide- and nitrogen-diluted syngas-air flames decreased in increase of diluents in the reactant mixtures. With helium diluent, the propensity for cells formation was significantly diminished, whereas the cellular instabilities for carbon dioxide- and nitrogen-diluted syngas-air flames were not suppressed.

  • Experimental studies were carried out to investigate the effects on flame propagation of gasoline-air mixtures by different electrostatic discharge energies in a cylindrical chamber. Three different ignition energies were used: 1 mJ, 50 mJ and 98 mJ. In this work, a high-speed particle image velocimetry technique was applied to visualize the flow-field around ignition electrodes. It was found that as the ignition energy increased, the ignition kernel was different. The different ignition kernel caused different flame initiation. During the flame initiation, the higher ignition energy was applied, the higher flame speed was observed. However, with increasing time, the flame speeds were independent of the ignition energies used. Theses observed flame behaviors were similar to computational simulations shown in the literature. It was also found that as the ignition energies increased, the velocities of unburnt mixtures ahead of propagating flame fronts increased.

  • Estimation of process safety is important in the chemical process design. Prediction for flash points of flammable substances used in chemical processes is the one of the methods for estimating process safety. Flash point is the property used to examine the potential for the fire and explosion hazards of flammable substances. In this paper, multivariate statistical analysis methods(partial least squares(PLS) quadratic partial least squares(QPLS)) using experimental data is suggested for predicting flash points of flammable substances of binary systems. The prediction results are compared with the values calculated by laws of Raoult and Van Laar equation.

  • The low-temperature pyrolysis of ABS, polyethylene (PE) and an ABS-polyethylene (ABS-PE) mixture was conducted in a batch reactor at $450^{\circ}C$. The conversion and the product yield were measured as a function of the reaction time with a variation of the mixture composition. The oil products formed during pyrolysis were classified into gas, gasoline, kerosene, gas oil and heavy oil according to the petroleum product quality standard of the Ministry of Knowledge Economy. The pyrolysis conversion increases with an increase in the content of PE. The yield of the pyrolytic products was ranked as heavy oil>gas>gasoline>gas oil>kerosene as the content of PE in the mixture increases.

  • This paper presents a numerical investigation of the Deflagration to Detonation Transition (DDT) of flame acceleration by a shock wave in combustible gas mixture. A model consisting of the reactive compressible Navier-Stokes equations is used. The effects of viscosity, thermal conduction, species diffusion, and chemical reactions are included. Using this model, the generation of hot spots by repeated shock and flame interaction in front and back of flame and the change of detonation occurrence by various shock intensities (Ms=1.1, 1.2, 1.3) are studied. The simulations show that as the incident shock intensity increases, the Richtmyer-Meshkov (RM) instability becomes stronger and DDT occurrence time is reduced.

  • Low explosion limits of flammable liquid mixtures can be calculated with the appropriate use of the fundamental laws of Raoult, Dalton, Le Chatelier and activity coefficient models. In this paper, Raoult's law, van Laar equation and Wilson equation are shown to be applicable for the prediction of the lower explosion limits for ethylacetate+ethanol and ethanol+toluene systems. The calculated values based on Raoult's law were found to be better than those based on van Laar and Wilson equations.

  • The autoignition temperature (AIT) of a material is the lowest temperature at which the material will spontaneously ignite. The AIT is important index for the safe handling of flammable liquids which constitute the solvent mixtures. This study measured the AITs of n-decane+ethylbenzene system by using ASTM E659 apparatus. The AITs of n-decane and ethylbenzene which constituted binary system were $210^{\circ}C$ and $430^{\circ}C$, respectively. The experimental AITs of n-decane+ethylbenzene mixture were a good agreement with the calculated AITs by the proposed equations with about $11^{\circ}C$ A.A.D.(average absolute deviation).

  • The low temperature pyrolysis of polypropylene (PP), polystyrene (PS) and polypropylene-polystyrene (PP-PS) mixture in a batch reactor at the atmospheric pressure and $450^{\circ}C$ was conducted to investigate the synergy effect of PP-PS mixture on the yield of pyrolytic oil. The pyrolysis time was varied from 20 to 80 mins. The products formed during pyrolysis were classified into gas, gasoline, kerosene, gas oil and heavy oil according to the petroleum product quality standard of Ministry of Knowledge Economy. The analysis of the product oils by GC/MS(Gas chromatography/Mass spectrometry) showed that new components were not detected by mixing of PP and PS. There was no synergy effect according to the mixing of PP and PS. Conversions and yields of PP-PS mixtures were linearly dependent on the mixing ratio of samples except for heavy oil yields. Heavy oil yields showed almost constant regardless of the mixing ratio.
