Familiarity and Preference on Korean Typefaces by Serif and Square-Frame (한글 글꼴의 세리프 및 네모틀 여부에 따른 친숙성과 선호도)

  • Korean typefaces are characterized on two axes: a font is either serifed or non-serifed, and it is either square-frame or non-squared. A serifed font entails small strokes that are regularly attached to the ends of larger strokes. Conversely, fonts without these marks are termed sans-serif. One of the exclusive features of Korean typeface of the square-frame type is that in such fonts, vowels and consonants often with their final vowels, are harmonically placed within the boundaries of the virtual square. We hypothesize that serifed and squared-frame typefaces are more popular and preferred owing to their widespread use throughout history. A survey incorporating Korean pangrams written with serif, sans-serif, squared, and non-squared typefaces was designed to test the present hypothesis. We found that people typically preferred and were more familiar with squared typefaces compared to non-squared typefaces. However, no difference was observed between serifed and san-serif typefaces. Furthermore, a positive correlation was found between familiarity and preference ratings only where the typefaces had squared and serifed features. The results revealed that Korean typefaces with the squared feature were more well-known and, therefore, more preferred to the typefaces without it. The results further indicated that Korean typefaces with the squared feature can be recommended for people's familiarity to it and the comfort it provides, and their emotional relevance and sensibility enhanced if serifs are added.

Negative Effects of City Slogan on the Retrieval of City Memory Unrelated to the Slogan (도시슬로건이 도시기억의 인출에 미치는 부정적 영향 :슬로건과 관련 없는 도시기억을 중심으로)

  • This study tests the hypotheses that city slogan reduces the retrieval of city memory unrelated to the slogan from the long term memory and that some variables moderate this effect, using the experimental method. The theoretical basis for the hypotheses is from the structure of the long term memory and the principle of memory retrieval discussed in ANM(Associative Network Model). For the test of hypotheses, the study adopted 4 experimental groups (2(slogan relevance: high or low) * 2(slogan concreteness: high or low)) and 1 control group. Each experimental group was exposed to one slogan corresponding to its condition while the control group was not. Then, the recall score was compared among experimental and control groups. One hundred and seventy-four undergraduate students belonging to the college of the authors participated in the study. The sample group was between 18 and 27 years of age, with an average of 22.4 years, and 54 percent comprised males. Results showed that city slogan had a negative effect on the retrieval of city memory unrelated to the slogan in most experimental conditions. This effect was more evident when the slogan had high relevance or high concreteness. But the main effect did not appear when the slogan had low relevance and low concreteness.

The Study on relationship between CSV and Investment Efficiency (CSV와 투자효율성에 관한 연구)

  • In this study, we aim to examine the impact of corporate social responsibility implementation, which is a major concern in previous research, on investment efficiency. The research method will be a qualitative study with reference to existing previous research. The three main claims to be addressed in this study will be summarized, and the research variables and research models will be described. As a result of the study, based on existing previous research, this study presented three issues to examine how a high level of corporate social responsibility performance increases investment efficiency. First, we argue that a company's high level of social responsibility will be positively related to investment efficiency. Second, it is argued that investment efficiency will be positively related to individual CSR components that represent the interests of primary stakeholders. Third, it is argued that companies with too high a CSR index and companies with a too low CSR index will have less correlation with investment efficiency. The contribution of this study will be to more accurately understand the impact of CSR on corporate investment efficiency. In the future, it is hoped that additional discoveries will be made through research that adopts the three claims presented in this study as hypotheses and empirically analyzes them.   • Market instability offers opportunities as well as the need for careful innovation strategies and learning for a company's survival. Companies that find new opportunities decide to carry out innovation and decide on the size of their investments by considering their position in the market they are aiming for and the intensity of competition. This study was conducted to check whether obstacles to innovation face by SMEs in the manufacturing sector vary depending on the stage of corporate growth and to identify the impact of the government support system on the decision-making process on the performance of innovation. According to the analysis, there were differences in obstacles to innovation depending on the stage of corporate growth. It was found that more innovative SMEs are, more obstacles they face, and to overcome such obstacles, they try to access government support systems more. In addition, the use of a government support system eliminated obstacles to innovation, and the positive and significant effects of investing in innovation were identified. This study is meaningful in that it explicitly approached these hypotheses by applying a multistage model to the process of innovation carried out by SMEs in the manufacturing sector.

The Role of Attitude Importance in Cultural Variations of Cognitive Dissonance (인지부조화의 발생에서 문화 차이의 의미: 태도 중요도의 역할)

  • The recent findings proposed and found that people from Eastern cultures could experience strong cognitive dissonance only when certain conditions, such as other-related choices, normative attitudes, were fulfilled. Even though such interesting findings are intuitively convincing on the basis of common understanding of individualist and collectivist cultures, the psychological mechanisms underlying the cultural variations of cognitive dissonance remain untested. The present study examined the role of attitude importance in cognitive dissonance by using the free-choice paradigm. After completing a pretest of individualism-collectivism scales, 60 college students ranked their preference to 10 items of either beverage or traffic regulations twice. Between the two ranking tasks, they were asked to engage in behavioral selection among their 5th and 6th preferred items. They also rated the personal importance of the preference. The results showed that attitude importance was positively correlated with attitude change and it could play a major role in experiencing cognitive dissonance beyond cultural orientation and situational factors. The current findings were discussed in universality of cognitive dissonance across cultures.

Effects of Animosity against a Product's Country-of-Origin: An Examination of Moderating Factors (제품 전형성 및 원산지와 제조국 일치여부에 따른 원산지 적개심 효과)

  • The present study purposed to examine empirically the effects of animosity against a product's country of origin on product evaluation, attitude and purchase intention. For this study, we conducted an experiment of 316 university students in the Metropolitan area. The results of this study suggest that the negative influence of animosity against the country-of-origin on attitude and purchase intention was higher for low-typicality products than for high-typicality ones. This result suggests that the negative influence of animosity against a specific country is not equal among all products from the country, but can vary among the products. For products manufactured in a country other than the country-of-origin, the negative influence of animosity against the country-of-origin did not decrease. This result means that, even for multinational products, animosity against the country-of-origin can have a negative influence on the consumers' response to the products. Based on major findings of this study, both academic and practical issues are discussed. Suggestions for future studies are provided.

Identification of Wells Effect and Effects of Risk Perception of Wrong Verdict (평결 판단에서 웰스효과의 확인과 평결 오류 위험성 지각의 영향)

  • The purpose of this study was to 1) replicate the Wells effect(i.e., reluctance to rule against the Defendant solely on the basis of probabilistic evidence) in Korea and 2) examine the validity of an Alternative explanation(i.e., perception of risk of wrong verdict). In study 1(n=46), mock jurors in the tire-tracks condition were reluctant to rule against the defendant based on their perceived probability and this pattern was not resulted in the tire-tracks-belief condition. Therefore, the Wells effect was replicated in Korea. In study 2(n=70), we manipulated the participants' perception of risk of wrong verdict. That is, participants who were assigned in the high risk perception of wrong verdict were informed that if the defendant were found guilty, the defendant would get considerable demage both in finance and reputation of the company. Participants in the low risk perception of wrong verdict condition were informed that these demage would not be great. The results revealed that the Wells effect was pronounced in the high risk perception of wrong verdict condition. That is, participants were more reluctant to rule against the defendant when they perceive the significance of the result of wrong verdict as high. Limitations of the study and the directions for future study were discussed.

Emotional Contagion as an Eliciting Factor of Altruistic Behavior: Moderating Effects by Culture (이타행동의 유발요인으로서 정서전염: 문화변인의 조절효과)

  • This study investigated the relationship between emotional contagion and altruistic behaviors and also examined the moderating effect of self-construals(independent and interdependent self) in this relationship. It was hypothesized that the emotional expression of people in need would be caught by others through automatic mimicry, that emotional information would be internalized through the facial-feedback process and that the transferred emotion would eventually result in a motive to call for altruistic behaviors. In Study 1, participants watched a video clip about a disabled student reporting difficulties in school life but showing facial expression opposite to the contents of message to separate emotional contagion and empathy. Participants' decision to participate in voluntary works for the disabled student was measured. As a result, it was found that the more participants experienced emotional contagion, the more they participated in altruistic behaviors. Study 2 measured the vulnerability to emotional contagion, actual experiences of altruistic behaviors, and self-construals. The results of hierarchical regression showed that interdependent self moderated the influence of emotional contagion on altruistic behaviors whereas independent self moderated the relationship in an opposite direction. The implications of emotion and altruistic behaviors in human evolution process are discussed.

The impacts of social category information (we/other) versus personality information (warm/cold) on impression formation (인상형성에 있어 사회범주 정보(우리-남)와 성격특성 정보(따뜻한-차가운)의 영향)

  • Most previous research on impression formation has been examined the effects of various informations exclusively within a category, either social category or individual characteristic. The present research examined and compared the priming effects of social category information (we and other) versus personality information (warm and cold) on impression formation. In Study 1, participants primed subliminally with combinations of social category and personality information (we/warm, we/cold, other/warm, and other/cold) were asked to rate faceial pictures on the good-bad and likable-dislikable dimensions. The analysis revealed only the significant main effects of social category information but not any effects of personality information on both the impression dimensions. In Study 2 in which participants were primed with either social category or personality information exclusively, priming of social category information influenced the judgments of likable-dislikable dimension and that of personality information influenced the judgments of good-bad dimension. These results suggest that personality information influences impression in general even though its impacts may be overwritten by social categorical information. The findings were discussed with its implication of everyday's impression formation and the cultural psychological perspectives.

  • This thesis is an psychological study investigating the meanings of skin from the perspective of analytical psychology. Skin, as the outermost layer of our body, protects the body and carries out essential physiologic functions. It is an organ of the body and also psychological contents can be expressed on it in various forms. We can find sociocultural connotations of skin, some of which are demonstrated in our language. Skin may become a carrier of persona which defines a person's role in the society. And it can be a place where ego is expressed. Eros is the principle of relationship by Jung's definition and skin is the space where eros is realized intensely. Skin may carry meanings as a symbol of transformation. Skin disease can be interpreted as a message from Self in certain cases. The theme of casting off skin in myths and dreams can be an analogy of an individual's sacrifice for individuation, and putting on a skin may imply taking special properties in psychological level.
